It took me a while to figure out how to, uh, word this.

I've heard tales of some developers who don't really think their series will survive a big graphical bump and were pinning a lot of hopes on the 3DS and Vita now thinking of expanding to the Wii U, as well.

This is a brilliant turn of phrase :)

These developers do realize that they aren't MANDATED to make games with the flashiest graphics that max out the system right?

This. There's nothing about the PS3 and 360 that's demanding HD graphics-intense games.

Although I love smaller creative games, and would love them on Wii U, this sounds like an excuse to release low-budget crap. We got this same excuse with the Wii...

Third party support should be fine. The ports will be easy enough to do to justify.

The bigger issue is trying to attract gamers away from established platforms (PS3/360/PC) that cater to this demographic, and I don't think they'll have a whole lot of success in that area but we shall see.

There's probably a fear that their games will be overlooked standing next to the AAA graphical powerhouse games on ps4/720.

The earliest? Mid August-September
A worldwide release would be almost impossible to archive and I'm not sure but I think Iwata (or Miyamoto, I really don't remember) said that they want to release the system this year with a short span between releases so I'm talking about weeks.
Japan hasn't seen the system officially so I'm sure they will be the first to get it.
Following America, Europe and then Australia
my two cents of course =P
I hope it's released around September. The earlier the better chances I have to grab one day 1. I hated waiting 4 freaking months after launch just to find a Wii.

I'm hoping for October. That'd give me plenty of vacation time banked at work. That, and my rental lease is up in September, and I really don't want to have to move in the middle of a console launch. That would royally suck.

Plus, we'd end-up camping for pre-orders in warmer weather.

If Dragon Quest 10 is released for the Wii U at launch or near launch, that's an automatic win for the console in Japan. Iwata knows this and I'm positive it's going to happen.

True, but I also want it to be available for everyone who wants it at launch. I was 14 when the Wii launched, and my parents did not like preordering. Now I have my own money, but I still speak for those who can't preorder.

Jesus fucking christ I'm old.

I was 24.
And after FINALLY getting one in June 07, my landlord stole it a few months later.
So I managed to get lucky and get one from Amazon in November 07 I think it was.
So I basically spent $500 on my Wii.

I was 13! Do I win?

I'm just so glad I no longer have to ask my parents to buy me things. They just don't understand my gaming hobby :(

Wow.. I was 28 when the Wii came out. Geez. And for the pre-order camping group at my GameStop back then, that was about the average age.

Yeah when I was camping out for the Wii the crowd was decidednly mid-late 20s and older.

This is where the disconnect occurs in gaming though. We are at the point of new generations who never even saw the early days and are totally locked into the everything must be HD and dudebro

Da fuck...
That's what I said.
I came home and it was gone, found out he had been in my apartment.
But he kept changing his story, first he was there.
Then he didn't go in, just looked in from outside, then he went in but kept a close eye on the people he had with him (some appraisers or something, think he was wanting to sell.)
He tried to blame my brother, because I had been letting him stay there for a few weeks.
But that was bullshit, because first of all.
My brother already had one, and WTF would he need it for?
To sell? If he wanted money he'd just beg me for it (and he did, but that's a whole other problem.)
And second, if he HAD taken it I would have beaten the fuck out of him.

So, because he kept changing his story we all knew he was full of shit.

It wasn't broken into, because it was locked when I came home.
Cops couldn't do shit, because in NC landlords can come into your place WITHOUT telling you they're gonna be there.

So I was basically fucked.

Oh yeah. In my experience, Nintendo's older fans seem to look at these youngsters who were nursed on PlayStation and xBox throwing-out the word "kiddy".. and we shake our heads. So funny, those children. They're so "matoor." ha.

Hey now, I'm 38 and I think everything must be HD. I have to say Zelda: Skyward Sword is one of the ugliest games I've seen in the past couple years because of how crappy it looks on anything other than CRT displays. The Wii should have had the capability to render in HD, like the PS2 and Xbox were able to.

Same here. After the NES, Mom told me that she wasn't supporting my gaming habit any more, and that I'd have to use my own money to buy an SNES (or anything else). On the day after Christmas, she and Dad took me to Babbages and I got my prize. A good day.

I agree that the Wii was an issue in that regard. And probably should have approached the disconnect differently but its Basically a Generation that Grew up on NES,SNES etc and now a Generation that doesnt know anything earlier than the PS2 or PS3

I played it on an LCD and it looked fine to me.

I was 13 too. I remember everyone hyping up the PS3 as the 'cool' console and how Nintendo had no games compared to the PS2. Then when the Wii came out, they called it kiddy and crap grafix. When Wii was clearly outselling the ps3, they were so butthurt and in denial. God, some people were so stupid back then.

HD adoption is now, even in 2012, somewhere north of 50%* in the U.S. so it's understandable if Nintendo had other priorities in 2005 when they designed the thing.

*Source is some training materials from the cable company my gf used to work for, YMMV

I have to admit, though, that on 2008 I thought the Wii sucks because it has no quality third party game, and I was caught in the hype that COD and Halo was getting because of my friends. So I bought a 360. Eventually, though, it flipped and now I've been playing more Wii and 360.
recently it's been 100% 3DS gaming

Yeah, I admit that i was indoctrinated with some of the crap people spewed out since it was true the Wii was SD compared to PS360. Before doing some research, I thought that PS2 was more powerful than GC and PS3 was way stronger than the 360. And playing COD4 MP wth friends was truly one of the true next Gen experiences i had. I too played the Wii more after my PS3 broke.

God, this thread has come to this? I was 23 and camped my ass outside of Target.

Kinda sad, but this is what happens with no info. I'm already plotting-out my camping strategy, which store to go to, what junk food to stock-up on for the long weekend, etc. Not much else to do.

Time flies though. Seems like just yesterday when we were reacting to E3 2006 and GAF was crashing.

Boredom is a bitch =P
I'm really interested to see Nintendo's final design for the Wii U game cases
Oh well, this is my latest try hoho

allim.jpg

*asumming they don't change the name and sticking totally to the Wii brand*

I would like to see Wii U games in cases that resemble the red Greatest Hits PS3 games.

Yep, I went there.

That said, Alistair, your case mockups look pretty neat. Although they definitely borrow heavily from the existing Wii and PS3 design aesthetics.
