So can we just plug this into the pc and backup our save files like we could with the psp?

Yep. And if you have PSP saves, you can plop 'em onto the Vita (they don't have copy protection like the games themselves do).

If anyone who owns a Vita can be bothered, I would really love to see what Tactics Ogre looks like on the system.

Ghosting made some of the scrolling text really hard to read on my PSP-2000. It isn't a problem on Vita at all. The graphics in the game also lend themselves well to being filtered, I think.

-----------

Okay, now that I've owned one of these things for a few days, I've got a few things to say.

1. Compared to the 3DS, it does backwards compatibility so well. Not only does the impeccable screen make the PSP's screen seem like a ghosty, washed-out mess in comparison, the extra analog stick completely changes certain games (for the better.) The PSP's larger, softer controls were easier on the hands, but the Vita's better shoulder buttons and form factor more than compensate for its tiny, clicky buttons.

2. The super-dark blacks actually make the system much easier to play in a dark room. Instead of having the whole screen emitting light and searing your eyes, each pixel only emits as much light as it needs to. The viewing angle is also insaaaaane.

3. The system is actually at the bottom threshold of what I would consider a comfortable size for movie-viewing. At 5", it's practically a tiny tablet. I don't think I could seriously watch a movie on a smartphone, but a Vita seems just large enough.

4. While game-playing (i.e. the important stuff) is great, I've already run into a heap of problems, most of which revolve around network connectivity. My Vita can't seem to hold a connection--I have to turn the Wifi on and off repeatedly to connect, which is then lost once I stop using it for any length of time. The PSN store is obviously a placeholder--lacking many of the categories seen on the PSP and PS3's storefronts. Near is pretty darn confusing, and I haven't bothered to figure it out yet.

5. I really, really hope that Sony winds up bringing the PS2 classics to Vita. I want God Hand on a portable so badly it hurts.

Oh cool, you are down the street. Lol Has your experience with near been similar to mine?
Relatively. When I commute home I just get on Orange at Library (don't feel like walking down the street to Wabash/Adams because i'm lazy) and take that to Midway, so I get to go around the whole loop on the L and I pick up a bunch of people. It's a little less when I take the Metra, but still, it surprises me to see so much.

It's cool so far, that's for sure!

Ah I just use the Metra myself and board in Union Station and I get decent amount of hits as well. Have also gotten a few gifts as well! Going to Lincoln Park taking the red line to Fullerton (since DePaul has two campuses) also nets me a good amount of hits as well.

So Near doesn't track while driving? Drove a bunch today but when I got back home it said traveled less then one mile, thats pretty much me walking to my car, lol.

Not sure how it works.

The hell it isn't. Everything has taken a back seat since Vita came out. Outside of Dungeon Defenders on PC and Saints Row 2 on PS3 (friend wants to play it online), it's been all Vita.

I have hardly turned on the PS3 since I got it back about 3 weeks ago.

This thing is a Godsend. I'm a parent of 2 and sometimes can't be troubled to mess with big clunky parts or screen with consoles. The Vita (I had this as PS3 before edit ><) is near PS3 quality and a better OS. Hard to go back after doing multitasking with ease on Vita.

Whoa :D

I agree though - PS3 has only been turned on once since i got my Vita :)

It is definitely more fluid and responsive than the XMB, but that really isn't saying much. Socially I am starting to notice a few quirks. Sure there is cross game chat. But what happens when you are sitting in a Hot Shots lobby waiting for a match to start and hit the PS button to join a chat? How about going back to the dash in any online game? That's right you drop instantly. The sporadic disconnections from PSN, the lack of push notifications for messages, and the strange installations choices have me thinking that Sony still has a long way to go. The software will get better, no doubt.

The one good thing about all of this is like you said software can be patched. And presumably they have enough hardware in there that they can fix a lot.

From over here (UK), FIFA seems to be the big ticket game. I saw a couple of people playing it on the tube and a few have it at work as well. All of them have been raving about FIFA. I played it on a friend's Vita, and I have to say I was pretty impressed, not enough to spend £250 for it, but impressed enough to consider buying it before the revision.

I definitely came away from my try thinking considerably better of it than my initial impressions and Sony should pay EA whatever it takes to bundle FIFA 13 with the Xmas batch of Vita consoles and try and keep it (timed) exclusive to Vita on handhelds so release it on iOS/Android/3DS a month or two after the Vita release. If I were in charge I would have two bundles for the UK, one with FIFA the other with COD, and in the US swap FIFA for Madden. If Sony can somehow get some kind of crazy netcode for 3G working online FIFA/COD over 3G would be a killer app in the UK. I could see a lot of people buying it just for that.

I feel like the Japanese launch soured the initial period for Vita so badly that most people thought it would bomb hard in the West, but I don't see it so far. I definitely expected it to bomb and for Sony to cut the price by the end of June (creating a whole new range of, err, ambassadors in the process) but from the my impressions and the ground level hype about FIFA on Vita, I think it has more momentum than expected.

Absolutely but one thing you ommited is that you are not dropped unless you leave for 5-10 seconds. Yes, that is still dumb but I learned not to leave any online matches unless it's going to be very fast like for something in the lines of checking the time in the OS. Otherwise, you're right, it's annoying. I think HSG is the only game that has done that to me as well.

It's instant for me in both Hot Shots and Wipeout. The second you hit the PS Button it's goodbye PSN connection. Right now, this is really not an always on device for me. I don't think they necessarily do it right on iOS either with game center so there's really no handheld device that comes as close. There is room for improvement though, and I think when Unit 13 comes or another really big online game comes out people will realize that there is a lot of room for improvement.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I literally haven't put a game in my PS3 since I got a Vita. It's currently just my Netflix box.

That'll change with SSX this week! Although, if SSX was coming to the Vita, I'd just get that version instead. I just love this thing.

Wow this thread...
I was mostly away from GAF for a few days and there's like ten pages of new posts.

I'm not all that interested in the games I have anymore and I'm kind of looking for something else to play on the Vita. I was thinking Katamari, but I hear it's pretty low on content compared to the last release, which kind of bums me out.

I hit a point in HSG where stuff is just too hard for me and I'm not having fun anymore. So I stopped playing. I haven't done online since the last time I played with GAF before the Vita really released. Every time I think about playing, I go into the lobby and wait a while with strangers, then get bored and leave.

I've been playing a lot of DW:Next, but the touch/motion controls are really getting to me. The game is good, but I absolutely hate the Vita-function mini-games. Every single battle will have at least one duel, and one of those other mini games. I like the risk-like conquest stuff, but the other aspects are toned down from DW7. There's no weapon switching, leveling up, etc. It's just... I don't know. When I'm laying there playing, I usually just wish I was playing DW7 instead. And when what I'm doing gets interrupted by a stupid Vita-function mini-game, I just want to stop playing right there.

I'm still waiting for Gravity Daze/RO in the mail. That won't be here for about three weeks though :-\

On another note, the Vita hasn't changed my gaming habits. I still play whatever console (home or handheld) that has the game I'm currently interested in. No hardware will ever change that. Games drive me, not shiny technology.

I'm finding it hard to get my 3DS out to play anymore :( I just got it like two weeks before my Vita too, so I haven't spent much time on it. I'm sure I'll be able to look past the graphical shortcomings, screen, and limited OS when another great game comes out though, because I was really enjoying it before the beast that is the Vita came along.

I wish someone from SquareEnix went out and said if we will ever get Crisis Core on PSN. If it's some kind of licensing hurdle, pay it. You have cash on the table waiting for you. And Type-O, where the hell is it!? Don't be incompetent SE, you have tons of legit PSP owners and newly found PSP gamers with Vita. Both those would be day 1's and I already had Crisis Core on UMD.

I think Type 0 will be announced at the next major game conference thingy. Maybe E3 or whatever.

I think the only reason it wasn't announced earlier was because the Japanese release is still pretty fresh. The NA version will probably be Vita and it'll be re-released in Japan as the International Version. So they don't want to hurt the PSP versions sales by announcing it too early.

Crisis Core I doubt will ever see PSN release now.

This 100x

I'm in the market for a new game and its honestly between unit 13 or an rpg of some kind. I've only heard good things about some of the above mentioned titles and would really like to check them out.

awesome handheld, after spending a few days with

just a question i wanna throw out there: hows all you Vita owners planning to stretch the life of your vita battery? because the way i look at it....your vita will either always be Draining or it will always be Charging, and eventually the nonremovable battery's ability to hold a charge will diminish.....

on the psp you could remove the battery and simply play with the psp plugged into the wall...no such option on the vita....

any thoughts?

It's actually user replaceable. Sony's online guide has steps to remove it IIRC.

The battery is non-removable, but that doesn't mean it cannot be replaced. You can open it up and swap the battery just like a PS3 controller, or just about any mobile device. Just send it to a service center to do it without voiding the warranty.

Edit: Apparently, instructions to replace it is in the manual, as Takao mentioned.

Today, I showed the Vita to one of my friends who I've talked about the system to before I bought it and said he had no interest in it. He had said that if he wants to play games on a portable he would just use his iPhone 4s. Well he was completely blown away by it. He said it was the best screen he's ever seen and the whole system felt fantastic. I had him play Unit 13 and he thought the lighting was great and was surprised that it was easy to aim with the little analog sticks. He was most blown away with WipEout, though. He just couldn't believe how good it looked, lol. His reactions as soon as the race started up were hilarious. He was like, "WHAT?! NO! THIS IS INSANE!"

He ended up saying he definitely wants to get one now.

I'm kinda hoping that the main reason why we havent seen a lot of PSP games that we want released here in the West (Type-0, Valkyria Chronicles 3, Monster Hunter Portable 3 as some examples), is that they were holding out and waiting for the Vita and see how that pans out here in the West. If in their eyes, the Vita does well, they'd release digital only copies of it, and save money on physical distribution.

One can only dream.

I was using the web browser the other day, and noticed while looking at a wall of text on a random Wikipedia page (mobile style, fully zoomed out), the text seemed sharper in the center of the screen, while the areas moving away from the center were progressively less sharp. Not a huge amount, just very slightly, barely enough to be noticeable. Of course now that I've seen it, I can't unsee it. I'm just wondering if that's normal for all screens, or if it's specific to OLED's.

And was there any date given on when PSOne Classics will be available for play on Vita? I'm totally willing to pay Sony money in order to play a game I've already played. They need to hurry up and take my money before I change my mind.

Should not be happening. Check a digital manual for one of your games and see if you still see the sharpness problem. It could be a bug with the web browser.

I have zero buyer's remorse with Vita. Most fun I have had with new gear in a very long time. Can't say enough about how much this system gets so much right.

Aw, sorry to hear that.

I'm kind of having the same problem as you in HSG with the difficulty; I'm having a hard time getting out of the amateur level of challenges. :(

Yeah, the DW: NEXT mini-games really ruin the experience, especially that turret mini-game where you shoot tigers with like, 2 frames of animation. There's another turret mini-game where some of the soldiers coming towards don't even have a running animation; they just glide at you.

Regardless, group messaging with you was fun, at least for me it was. :D

A couple of things I do like and see promising is that you don't need to have the Messaging app open to receive messages nor the Party app open to receive invites. You also get game invites as soon as they are sent so I don't understand why the same isn't done for messages

Still waiting to hear more on Warriors Lair...info is trickling out and I had to search for it. Wish they gave it more attention, in time I suppose, but hopefully it doesn't mean the game is far off into the year.

So after a weekend with this thing I couldn't be happier. I'm a 360, Wii, PS3, DSi, PSP, PC owner and they're all being neglected in lieu of this thing. And it looks to stay that way for awhile. At least until the new toy sheen wears off. Absolutely glued to it. More-so then any new console that I can recall.

The only thing I don't like about the build is the shoulder buttons. They feel kinda cheap, but no more than my PSP2000. Everything else about it is amazing.
That screen..

Anyway, I want to talk about the games not the hardware.

Hot Shots
Kinda dissapointed by the resolution just as I was with the PS3 version. Especially after playing some of the other launch titles. Everything else is exactly what I expected. So I'm a happy camper there. Awesome game with tons to keep me busy.

Super Stardust Delta
This game is amazing. Was already a huge fan of SS:HD, but I never thought they'd be able to squeeze the experience into a handheld. It looks and plays PERFECTLY. I think it's a system seller. The sheer amount of crap on the screen without even a hickup is just incredible. Probably my most played game so far.

UMVC3
Another game I came into not really expecting to get the full console experience. While it does make me long for my fightstick, it plays amazingly well. The backgrounds are pretty stagnant, the hitsparks aren't as pretty and the Hypers are less seizure inducing. But the framerate, resolution and playability is jaw dropping. The game looks incredible in motion. Far beyond my expectations. I was expecting the SF4 iOS treatment and I couldn't be more wrong. I never would have imagined having this in my pocket. Haven't tried any network play yet. So far just treating it as my pocket UMVC3 laboratory. The hitbox stuff is a pretty sneaky addition by capcom. :)

Unit 13 (demo)
Was expecting to mostly try this just to test the idea of a shooter working on the Vita, but ended up deciding it's a day one purchase for me. The framerate isn't as nice as Stardust and UMVC3 but not expected. It's extremely playable and I think the scorechasing shooter is perfect for a handhelp. I ran through the demo at least 3-4 times and enjoyed every minute of it. I loved the idea of The Club, but this seems to be executed better with a little less cheese. This makes the prospect of a proper portable SOCOM interesting, but I think this format fits better for a mobile device. I'm not real sure if I want 32 player MP matches on my handheld...
but would likely buy it[SOCOM Vita] anyway.. who am I kidding :p

~This demo was a huge surprise for me. If the "buy now" button at the end of the demo worked right now I'd already own it. I can't wait for this game.

Mutant Blobs Attack
My God. Please play this game. I bought it somewhat reluctantly and it's turned into a huge surprise. Very fun, very creative, very funny, and very satisfying. Again having really cool leaderboard stuff. I'm getting spoiled by all these leaderboards.

other stuff
I'm a huge WipEout fan, but the framerate talk has dissuaded my thus far. I didn't realize there was a demo? I never saw it on the Vita's marketplace. Will check it out if I can find it.

Tried the Uncharted demo and wasn't super impressed. I found the gunplay in Unit 13 more satisfying. Obviously two different worlds, but Unit 13 is what I'm looking for right now I think. Loved UC1 and 2 so I may pick it up down the line.

Going all digital if I can, but I ran out of space really fast. Having to use the PS3 and PC so I don't have to redownload stuff all the time. Will probably invest in the 32gig before Unit 13 and Motorstorm:RC come out.

My main play area =D

Never played a Persona game, but I really dig this wallpaper. Thanks to whoever made it!
