Media Create Sales: Week 8, 2012 (Feb 20 - Feb 26)

I think the problem is that the 3DS is too alive - and it's being purchased as the followup to the PSP.

I said this would happen, and they all laughed at me

WELL WHO'S LAUGHING NOW

This brings up an interesting question... is it possible for the vita to do well in north america and in Europe with no Japanese-centric games?

It's not really possible for the Vita to do well in North America and Europe, period.

Is there a Netflix type service in Japan? Any chance a service like that could become a really popular use for Vita?

PS3's secret killer app was Torne, which is compatible with Vita, though an update is in the pipeline to make it considerably better than the PSP connectivity. Torne is a DVR, and not so much web streaming like Netflix.

Well, because there aren't any other well-known IPs announced for the Vita, guess we'll have to wait till TGS or is there some kind of PS Meeting in the coming weeks/months?

Gundam, and Final Fantasy X ain't on that. The only big things coming up are western events, and at a western event Sony's going to announce western games. Unless Sony does a disaster report conference the only place we'll be hearing game announcements are either from Famitsu, or the third party's own discretion.

Wow at no Wii games in the Top 20.

And the Vita will crack the 10k mark in the next two weeks. Poor Vita (which also has no games in the Top 20).

PSP seems to be still healthy.

Wow at the spike of the 360. Selling almost more than the DS. Price cut? Just kidding...

So what's the reason Harvest Moon is suddenly doing so well?

The last one I played was the Gamecube game, and before that the Gameboy game (original Gameboy). A silconera post on the 2nd page (4th for 50ppp people) says that you can now customise your ranch and characters etc -- so has it gone more in the sort of Animal Crossing type direction?

It sort of seems that way.

You could perform tasks similar to the way Animal Crossing implements them in Tale of Two Cities.

I can't believe everyone keep forgetting Miku!

It's a spinoff to a series that has never seen a western release, so very few on GAF will care about it, and because it's on a region-locked platform 1 of the 4 people on GAF who care about Miku games will actually get to play it. It's not exactly the most relevant series in people's minds.

Because it's a spinoff it's also a bit harder to judge performance wise. Nendoroid Miku's are supposedly very popular, but will a Nendoroid Miku game be?

The important sales facts of 2012 so far:

1) 3DS sells like hot cakes
2) PS Vita struggles
3) 3DS software three-headed hydra shows off tremendous legs
4) Harvest Moon shatters everyone's expectations
5) Bombalibur bombed.
6) Final Fantasy XIII-2 showed some legs

oh shit, soul calibur 5 bombed in japan? wtf happened, i missed this

I'd like Falcom to see the light and start using those 3DS kits. With more equalized media costs this time around, there's more incentive for them to go multiplatform and that 3DS base is going to look better and better as time goes on. All their old PC (Ys VI engine) and PSP games would make for good ports, even their Vita stuff so far looks like it'd translate pretty painlessly to 3DS.

It could be nice for expanded sales, but on a personal level I'd never buy a multi platform game on 3DS if I had the choice of a Vita version. So putting Ys on 3DS does nothing for me. Although maybe it is time for multi platform development to happen in portable gaming. I'd rather see a port up of a 3DS game than not have it available at all on the Vita. With hardware sales trending the way they are in Japan a publisher has to be foolish to ignore a potential 3DS version of a game.

The bigger news would be Falcom finally getting their games up on Steam like what is being rumored. :p

Just saw on the Iwata asks that Nendoroid Miku figurines are the second most popular merchandise, second to the PD series. The also talked how they ended up making her Nendoroid because regular Miku looked too small on the 3DS screen.

The Soulcalibur series never performed very well in Japan in the first place. The new game has less content than previous titles and many missing characters. Also, it lacked guests that actually appealed to Japan (unlike, say, the guest designed girls in SC4). The improved online also seemingly did nothing for the sales, unlike the team probably expected.

Oh, well, I love it anyway. The character creator is awesome compared to the previous ones in the series , the gameplay, graphics and soundtrack are all really good too.

Impressed by the 3DS trinity of games. I'm eager to see how long they can hold up for.

This marks the 7th week in a row where the 3DS sells more than anything else combined hardware-wise!

Wonder how much legs Miku will end up with. It's definitely beginning to reach mainstream but it's still very much an internet craze that's fueling her popularity, and since it's going to be on Nintendo hardware the "game blogs" will definitely go negative hype overload on it. I don't visit the hachima/jin115-type sites out of disgust (poor representation of 2ch threads through cherry picking would be an understatement), but have definitely seen a number of threads and posts tailored to be culled and posted and then spread through twitter, news sites, whatever. A lot of Miku's popularity resides in a younger/adolescent group of kids, and this are probably the most likely group to believe those bullshit opinion posts. The demo wasn't great, but it certainly didn't deserve the bashing that some people gave it.

SC used to sell decently in Japan, but SCV (maybe SCIV?) rubbed people the wrong way as V sold considerably less than IV.

Is that their excuse? I've just tried Bravely Default demo and the girl's head appear to be normal on the screen without the need enlarge it.

What light? I doubt Ys IV is going to perform considerably worse than its PSP peers. The fact they're investing in PyreEngine should tell you they're not all too interested in Nintendo hardware.

I also really doubt they'd handle any ports internally. They shipped off the Kiseki PC and Vita ports to outside the company, why would 3DS be any different?
Market realities are looking different than they were six months back, there's some good growth opportunity with 3DS is all. Falcom probably doesn't need to support 3DS, but then they probably didn't need to support PSP either. They moved on an opportunity and it worked out for them, I'd like to see them do that again and keep growing.

PyreEngine is free and portable afaik, some XBLA games even run on it. I don't see that precluding Falcom from supporting non-PlayStation platforms, and that's even if they ever get around to commiting a game to it. Ys IV isn't even using it.

I'm guessing yes.

Also, very high hope for KH3D from everyone. I was thinking 200K-250K first week would be great for the game already.

I wouldn't call it an excuse... just a design choice to accomodate and make the best of the hardware.

It'd be more popular if the 3DS was region free so I could BUY IT!

Then as now we've got a major portable hitting its stride, and a relative lull at home as the dominant machine(s) are Old.

Great for 3DS but great for gaming? Kinda scary isn't it?

What's the worst that could come out of it? If companies can't compete graphically because of a performance ceiling of the hardware they'd have to differentiate from the pack through gaming innovation. Isn't that usually a good thing for us?

PS2 was destroying everything, did it kill gaming?

How well was everything else selling alongside it? I'm sure there was a portable Nintendo system doing equally well.

This is a situation where 3DS is selling well, and everything else is in the gutter. Doesn't give much hope for Wii U either when the top selling console with steady new releases is only doing ho-hum.

Yeah well, Nintendo sucks, but will be making the big bucks.

I'll be dealing with this in the next year or so, well, whenever Medarot 3D is released. I'm hoping by then I won't have to reward them by buying a second 3DS. If that's the case I won't even bother.

the key difference is that while PS3 didn't have much competition, vita does.

devs where making games that just PS3 and 360 could support, leaving the Wii out of the equation.

The portable market is a whole different beast, most support will be toward the weaker nintendo system, as it have always been in the portable market.

West is a whole different story.
The PS3 had a lot competition in the begining from the Wii. During the two first years, the PS3 only outsold the Wii for 4 weeks. But yeah, most of the bigger 3rd party support contunied to be made for the PS3 and Xbox 360 instead, that is true.

In 2010 and 2011, the PSP have seen at least equally good support as the Nintendo platforms (in terms of numbers of games released, the PSP actually saw the most releases). In these days, most support is towards the 3DS, no question about that, but history shows that nothing is set in stone in the begining of a console lifecycle.

I could see Wii U doing rather well if it caters to both the Wii and PS3 audiences. Like 3DS seems to be doing for the DS and PSP audiences.

I definitely wouldn't class the vita as region free... Not for me at least I will not dare go through that hassle for a game or 2.

I speak for me naturally. Technically I guess you could call that "region free" but thats just too much.
As far as i know, there is no problem to import Vita games from Japan and play them on whatever region your PSN account is on. The only hassle happens if you're going to buy stuff online, since then you need to change your PSN account which requires a factory reset of the Vita console.

If you're buying retail games you have no hassle at all, right?

If I buy a Japanese copy of Gravity Daze from Play-Asia it'll work on my North American Vita with absolutely no issues.

Issues arise if the game has an online pass, or DLC functionality but that won't hinder the entire purchase as useless. It's in the exact same position the PSP was in, and no one would say that wasn't a region free platform.

Those Harvest Moon numbers are impressive. Good to see the game off to a good start. As for Vita it's still on life support it seems. Hasn't dipped under 10k but getting awfully close.

If Vita games started using online passes I could see issues arising.
