Yakuza: Dead Souls |OT| MAJIMA GORO TIME YOU GUYS

That's a lot of hours. I don't really know a lot about the structure of DS. I thought it was maybe more linear and shorter than regular Yakuza games, but if someone can put so much time into it I have to assume it is just as open world-ish as the mainline games?

I'm sure someone can easily completely everything in way under a hundred hours.

Its a full Yakuza game. You won't feel shafted when you complete it. You have the sidequests, minigames and other difficulty levels to play with. Its really no different than the others in terms of having extra content to explore.

My OF THE END (hardest difficulty setting) save file is sitting on 20 hrs. Keep in mind I think I skipped cutscenes when I played through on OF THE END.

Are they bad or are you just the type of gamer who doesn't care for cutscenes?
The cutscene/story moments are my favourite part of the Yakuza series games.

It's possible that he imported and didn't understand them or understand them enough

Very cool. Looking forward to DS much more now.

I skipped through them because it would have been my third time watching them through. I played the game through on Hard, then EX-Hard and then OF THE END. There's nothing wrong the with the cutscenes. They're perfectly fine.

I had a lot of fun with OF THE END, just don't expect the same old RGG experience you've had the last couple of times out (ie. battle system).

The cutscenes are as good as in previous Yakuza games. Some of them are a bit more tongue in cheek here however.

Oh that's great. I was worried for a bit there.
I'm totally in for a bit more silly Yakuza. I enjoyed what little there was in the demo, but I would enjoy anything with Akiyama.

The funny thing is I think the combat in Yakuza is the part that excites me the least. I like the more Shenmue-like aspects better.

Hate Zombies but love Yakuza. Will see who will win.

Yep. I don't hate them as much as I'm tired of them.

I will basically buy it for that majima karaoke scene.

More hyped now that I read through this topic and saw the point about it still being a fairly full Yakuza game. 20+ hours seems excellent, as long as the shooting isn't boring or lame.

First Yakuza game I'm waiting for a price drop. With the Mass Effect 3 CE, Tales of Graces f and Warriors Orochi 3 my wallet is already committing seppuku.

I played the Japanese demo awhile back, and I remember being put off by the controls at the beginning, but then once I played it further into the game it became a non-issue. Will be picking this up ASAP, as Yakuza 3 and 4 have given me my moneys worth many times over.

Was this the version of Yakuza that had earthquakes that were cut after the disaster last year? Or am I thinking of another game entirely?

You're probably thinking of Disaster Report 4, which got cancelled. Ryu Ga Gotoku Of The End (japanese version of Yakuza: Dead Souls) just got delayed due to the disaster, along with Motorstorm: Apocalypse.

Love Yakuza, hate zombies, still buying on principle. (Gotta gotta get that Yakuza 5)
Here's hoping the new controls are a little better than the JP ones.

For Ryuji Goda and Nagoshi, anything. Day one, still working on Binary Domain! Sega love, but please bring Black Panther over to the West!

I've one a great job of staying away from media / trailers for this game since I knew they were eventually going to localize it.

But I must ask: is there any hand-to-hand combat in the game?

They've done so much good work in polishing their fighting engine, so I find it hard to believe they would completely dump it.

How are the controls in this game? Binary Domain has spoiled me a bit I don't think I could play an entire game built around the awful shooting mechanics of Yakuza 3&4.

I want this game SO CORE right now! Picking it up with Tales of Graces F, day one. Gonna be some good times! After Binary Domain this was probably my second most wanted game this year.

OP updated! thanks to bree & others for actual impressions.
as for Black Panther/PSP games: cat collecting does sound cool, i kinda dismissed the first game after Segata and others commented that it was the weakest of the lot. i'd still love to see us get it one day, but maybe and HD collection of 1 & 2 is more likely? who knows, i never really think this team gets a huge budget but Nagoshi did get that promotion!

Dang I still don't even have Yakuza 4 yet!
Slacking :(

aw man, you guys. 4's not even that long, how'd you put it down?! ya'll need to get on that!

Buy two copies and mail me one Irish. Hook a ninja up haha

buncha bums! haha - honestly im still debating just hitting up gamestop, or more likely, seeing if i can rent a day 1 copy from gamefly, they usually let me keep them at around $45, and i can tell myself i got a new copy & created more demand that way too.

Day 1 here! Is there significant amounts of scotch in this game, Irish?

god i hope so! one trailer showed mini-games and bar action, so I can only assume. leaving out scotch would be worse than dropping hostesses, really.

I admittedly also don't get Sega's release date mentality, but i'm just glad to see this series still localized.
guys i know it's a big month with a lotta big games, and this one screams half-off next month! etc, but if you can, try to support it early, as your dollar will have a lot more effect telling Sega we want these games than EA/bioware (for example) who's already gonna sell millions anyway! it's your choice of course, just a suggestion.

i approve of this thread, and plan on purchasing it day one so i can get my platinum

i love how these threads attract all the right people.

Great thread. I don't like other playeble characters (not that i don't like actually, i just want Kiryu), i don't like zombies, i know the price will be halfway down in a week or two but i will still get this day one. One of my favourite video game series. One of the most special and detailed game series ever made.

Ryuji Goda is cooler than Majima, you guys.

And, again, you can beat zombies with items. I don't know why everyone thinks it's strictly guns

Any chance this has Japanese audio? I have the import versions for the other games in the series but didn't want to pay $100 for this based on the demo. Wouldn't mind picking up at domestic pricing if it has the Japanese track.

Every Yakuza released outside Japan since Yakuza 2 only has Japanese audio. So yeah, it does.

3 and 4 only had Japanese voice overs. So I would say it's safe to say this one does too.

I was going to pick this up on release day, but I just got around to buying Yakuza 1-4 a few days ago. I imagine this would just sit on my shelf a while before I finish those. And I am guessing that playing this first would probably spoil some of the twists/deaths in the other Yakuza games. That and I won't know who the hell any of these people are.

Good luck killing some of the bigger enemies with items.

The gunplay isn't bad, but it's not as intuitive as Binary Domain.

PSLife Review "OK for what it is."

Regular enemy variety gets better as game goes on, but the basic task doesn’t: shoot zombies until they die. Even with varying guns and the four characters switching up as the player progresses through the plot, the experience always has that faint flavor of same-old-same-old hanging around. I’m not saying we need constant friggin’ fireworks, unicorns shooting rainbows, and bear cavalry in here, but the formula just seems to rely too heavily on you being the only guy in the country who has figured out how to shoot a gun.
...
From an obvious homage to the Licker of Resident Evil, to a giant octopus, to a demon bigger than the roof of a building, and more, the bosses and mid-bosses constantly provide exciting fights.
...
Franchise fans get to see an amusing side story starring the characters they’ve come to love over the last half-decade, doing things they’ve never done and interacting in new ways. There’s also something entirely too fun about controlling series madman Majima and blasting things with a shotgun.
...
The characters are as good as ever, and their interactions and dialogue are enjoyable.
...
The first time a zombie fell from the ceiling, I jumped. The next 400 times, it was wholly expected, to the point that it became a joke. I’d walk into a room and say out loud to my wife “I’ll bet you a zombie drops from the ceiling in the next area,” and a lot of the time, I’d win. The first time I saw a zombie waiting for me around a corner, it was a little startling. By the end of the game, I was convinced that zombies hung out exclusively near corners and on ceilings. Talk about going back to the well. It’s almost like the team tried to create scares and atmosphere on par with Silent Hill or Resident Evil, but didn’t realize that the great things about those games is that the fright and tension are near constant. There is little comic relief, minimal zaniness, and even less karaoke to conflict with the feelings of those games. Having a zombie or two or nine drop from a ceiling would have been great, but this game overused it, as well as a few other tricks.
...
Yakuza: Dead Souls isn’t going to bring in any new blood to the Yakuza series, but for its existing fans, it provides an interesting story and gameplay elements that haven’t been explored previously. Combat against the common zombies gets old fast, but there are some great boss battles to balance it out. As a huge Yakuza fan myself, I somewhat enjoyed the game, but wish there would have been a little better pacing and more chances to explore. Dead Souls ends up being OK for what it is.

I hope this game is not as bad as Yakuza 4. ( I know it's completely different ,but Yakuza 4 was so freaking bad it made me afraid of this and future Yakuza games).
