I also think it's funny that people are criticizing him for taking so long to make a game when the Japanese companies he's criticizing take just as long, with hundred-men workforces, and still make terrible games

So Japanese development is only comprised of Square-Enix, KojiPro and SCEJ then(I'll ignore your last statement because it's completely dumb)? That's terribly short-sighted...

Worst thing about this is that it wasn't a random Twitter comment or blog post, it was in front of a packed audience of game developers and in response to a Japanese dev. What a gaping asshole.

This seems to be a common opinion of people who don't actually play Japanese games anymore. They just look at the most visible titles and assume they're awful and go on beating their chests.

Not just Japanese, but handhelds too. :(

explain to me how it's different other than the fact that he put his real name and face behind his dumb, hyperbolic comment?

He's speaking on a panel at GDC as a developer and leader of the industry. Not some kid on the internet posting on a discussion board. If you can't tell the difference, well...

My sentiments on this issue and towards Mr. Fish's game can be summed up by the following statement:

"AHUAHUAHUAHUAHUAHUAHUAHUAHUAHUAHUAHUA"

Hope you had fun taking over 5 years just to make Crush again.

People need to focus more on the fact that he said this to some aspiring kid's face in the midst of a crowd of people. He didn't shoot his mouth off in an interview. He didn't post a dumb opinion on Twitter (intially, anyway). On the most base of fucking human levels, that shit is abhorrent and without excuse. Cut and dry. Fuck him.

This right here.

Just because you're not interested in Japanese games doesn't mean they suck. I love platformers, but don't like Megaman. I don't go around saying they suck just because I don't like them.
But I am interested in Japanese games. The problem is that they've stopped making good ones

So Japanese development is only comprised of Square-Enix, KojiPro and SCEJ then(I'll ignore your last statement because it's completely dumb)? That's terribly short-sighted...
Don't forget Capcpom! They largely suck nowadays too!

Others looked on awkwardly as the Japanese developer was then subjected to a string criticisms about game design flaws in his native country. The developer nevertheless thanked the panel for their response and returned to his seat.

Ah well, Japan may or may not have a shit dev scene but at least they still have manners.

I knew of Fez. Wasn't that interested in it but definitely won't be buying it now.

Well, they kinda suck this gen. Some of them take waaaaaaaaaaay too long to release their games, and some are definitely out of touch in certain areas.

But they still made Galaxy 2 and Dark Souls, the two best games of this gen.

So he's wrong. Regardless, you don't say that shit in front of an audience. Let alone fucking at GDC.

Who are these companies everyone is talking about? Only S-E and Team ICO do this. That's not the entirety of Japan. In fact, Japanese turn around on development is on par with the US (if not faster in some cases)

I agree with you that it's similar enough.

If the validity of someone's opinion about games is predicated on how many games they've made, we have a serious problem.

It would be best to shit on Fish from a different angle. (The rudeness angle seems perfectly viable.)

Okay, so the comment was harsh, but the amount of disagreement is weird. Was there this much backlash when Inafune said it?

not to mention he called out that poor Japanese dev who went to the panel for his talks, not get scolded in public for something he didn't do.

What a douche, must be really full of himself. Can't stand guys like that, even if you're a genius in your domain, not that I think he is, you should show some respect and restrain yourself when talkin about other peoples creations/achievements.

It'd be like me saying Western games take forever to release by only looking at Alan Wake, LA Noire and Duke Nukem Forever.

Is there a transcript/video of this panel? I'd rather make up my own mind on what went down. From Phil's twitter it seems he acknowledged he probably game across too hard though.

Still, I agree with him somewhat. Japanese games showed some early promise this gen, but just fell by the wayside. Most are stuck in the past, not moving forward. Yet when they do move forward, it's utterly batshit crazy, rather than genuinely innovating.

Why do people keep bringing up long dev times? Apart from Square Enix and Sony, how many Japanese devs are responsible for this?
Or does Japan = SE and Sony now?

Are there not just as many examples in the west, or more?

well I didn't know much about Fez, and after this comment, all I really know about it is I won't be buying it. Comments like this are totally unconscionable, like buying a Limp Bizkit CD.

This guy used to post on GAF, he was quite abrasive from what I remember. Can remember him making some "interesting" comments about his time at Ubisoft. He doesn't really do tact.

You're obviously not looking very hard, because there are plenty of fantastic japanese games.

It doesn't matter, the opinion I was initially responding to was the one where he is somehow unqualified to criticize someone else as a game developer or publisher when he can't even get a game developed or published himself. If people really held that sentiment this forum wouldn't exist. We could never criticize another game, publisher, athlete or movie director..

I just checked and this is the same guy that said that you can't play PC games on your TV.
Just a class act all around.

"Leader of the industry"? Really?

After looking for information about his game, that seems to be a fair evaluation.

At least they're not dumbing themselves down to reach the CoD market like western games.

Oh yeah. I went there.

There was ton of backlash and Inafune is generally mocked. That said Inafune's sentiment was a little bit different. For one he didn't think the games Capcom was making sucked lol.

Of course you understand that the current way people look at Japan is to say it's past its prime. You may have the self confidence to say that's irrelevant, but do you think that that motivates people to say, "Look, we're here, and we're fighting hard to prove ourselves in a global space!"?

TI: It's important to have the skill to express what you're doing, what you want to do -- you know, express yourself. I'm talking about social skills. I'm sure you're interviewing a lot of people, and maybe you meet people at parties, Japanese developers. Japanese developers, they don't have the necessary social skills. The American social skills, European social skills.

You know, maybe they don't have humor; they don't know how to joke around. Maybe it's a problem with their manner. So if those people don't have those necessary social skills, and if those people are the ones who are developing the game, no matter how much they try to make globally accepted, globally popular games, that work in different cultures, that might be very difficult.

So you're crushed by the lack of charm, as a primary reason for why Japanese games suck nowadays, but you're willing to ignore a million charming titles because of resolution and screen size?

You don't see the problem with this?
Yes to the first and no to the second. I'm not into staring at small screens, using mostly annoying un-ergonomic controls. Never have been. For the most part, Japanese console games just don't do it for me this gen compared to every one before it. I've had this opinion all gen.

I see enough visual similarities to call Fish on his shit. Also took five years to make, but without MS publishing money and so forth, just one dude in his spare time.

To be fair (and I really don't want to), Fez does some funky 3D stuff. It's a 2D view of a 3D world.

That said, it's still a remarkably immature statement.

This is exactly the problem here. People are too hung up on what he does and if they agree with what he said. It's less about his opinion and more about being an ethnocentric douche to a Japanese developer in front of an audience.

Is there a video of the panel? It'd be interesting to hear what the tone of the discussion was before we all jump to conclusions and call him an asshole. Maybe it was supposed to be a funny statement that just completely came out the wrong way.

Japanese devs are lagging behind creatively? I'd argue that Japanese games are still the most creative games out there. Japanese developers were responsible for those "Wii __" titles, and they're by far the most influential games of this generation.

yeah I was about to make a comment about the post you quoted. if anything, jp dev is lagging in technology which is why they took long time to catch up, creatively, they're still one the most creative guys around. and you can't really say western dev is that much creative when we got flooded with how many dudebro shooter.
