EA, Epic: "The Ipad could be the future of game consoles"

Well, yes, but the *reason* it's easy to imagine that is because iPads sell at a cost premium with more frequent generational updates than a home console; two factors that are rather off-putting to many price-conscious gamers.

That statement is *basically* "It's easy to be more powerful than a home console if people buy hardware updates every year". You could just as easily argue "it's easy to imagine a world where a PC is more powerful than a home console" (of course it is, that's the world *we live in*!)... but at least you can update PCs in a piecemeal fashion rather than having to buy an entire new unit every time the 'next gen' comes around.
Also there's concern about Ipad games outpacing your capability in one or two gens because of the constantly moving bar of Ipad generations. Consoles get locked in.

The Ipad but Im gonna be buying that Galaxy Note tablet, seems like a better deal to me, especially for my artistic needs.

What now Epic? Your market becoming segmented?

You can bet that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo were shitting themselves about Apple bundling a controller in with the ipad 3.

Ipad + tv out (not required) + controller is probably the best combination given the current market.

Most of the ipad detractors centre around 'no buttons' but that is not exactly hard to fix is it? What then?

Costs an absolute fuck ton of money.

Apple are shit with storage. If i'm paying a lot of money for a console i want A LOT of space, and i want to be able to expand it if i want. Not "You ran out of space? Too bad. Better go buy a new console!"

The more options for gaming the better! Why are so many people against iPad gaming if it's in addition to the PC/Console gaming you already do?

Exactly. Apple has screwed itself over, at least for a long time.
The current game industry wouldn't be sustainable with $10-$15 big budget games
It's just not possible. All you people claiming iPad is the future when people using Apple products have become so used to super cheap games, I hope you don't expect any big budget games if this comes to be...

How has Apple screwed themselves over? They're raking in the cash right now.

I'm ot against coinciding, i'm against one rising up and murdering the other one, which is what a lot of people are saying is going to happen for some reason.

AirPlay dude, seriously I think it's quite amazing how one press on your ipad or iphone can then mirror the screen to any tv you have an apple tv plugged into, wireless and with a rather good refresh rate.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GaT9EGsLrk skip to 1 min to see a game being played

I still don't care. It's limited to 720P. I don't want cheap ass mobile tech as my console replacement.

That's even worse. :p Ipad 3 isn't equipped for big boy 1080P gaming. Also, now I'm going to have to buy a 500 dollar ipad and 100 dollar apple tv unit? Good luck!

I wonder what the Apple controller will look like when Apple finally releases one. It seems like they'll have to, if the iPad eventually becomes a gaming hub that connects to the TV.

apple already have an external pad, called an ipod touch and iphone :p

some games already allow you to use them as separate pads, thought it is still a touchscreen without physical buttons.

I still don't care. It's limited to 720P.

1080 with the new apple tv :p

I would agree if all the world could easily buy an iPad like the person next to me. Until that time comes, I don't think that the iPad will reign in games.

And I expected a reply from Wario in the first page. I am disappointed.

This is the most disturbing bit:
Kristoffer Waardahl of Crytek said "As more people come to these platforms, we have to follow our fans,"
What the fuck is he talking about? Just because the same gamers that play Crysis buy tablets and smartphones does it mean the fans have moved on and Crytek has to ''follow them''?
Both Crytek and Epic have/used to have a considerable PC fanbase that is still waiting for proper support, yet Epic is investing in a Fruit Ninja skin series and Crytek is making a Kinect game.

I think we had enough ipad threads for this year.

Yeah I've about had my fill of people rooting for the death of gaming for this year in the last 2 weeks alone. I'm not just talking about gaffers either, there's a strange amount of industry and media people rooting for it too.

Thats not what they are suggesting. The idea if that the iPad would be so powerful, that it would replace all that. Just plug into TV, grab controller, no need for consoles or PC's, since the iPad can do everything anyway.

Meh, whatever. Shit changes but I don't see the games that I enjoy going anywhere and I honestly don't give a shit if it's on a Kyocera Game Box as long as they're still enjoyable. So far gaming has only gotten better (IMHO of course) so I'm just along for the ride.

Sure the iPad can, and console manufacturers know this. Assuming they would rather ignore this is stupid, and hopefully we'll see breakthroughs from the console side.

I have to admit the reason I stopped high-end pc gaming was the expense of the yearly upgrade. If iPad becomes the dominate platform, I would be to that yearly upgrade cycle. I don't think I'm going to like this...

Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but iPad updates yearly.

Going on the current console timelines, the consoles releasing next year will be around for 7-8 years.

Now if some of the less flattering spec rumors come to fruition and the consoles aren't too big of a jump over current consoles......

......I think there is a very good chance that toward the latter part of next gen that apples iPad could potentially meet or exceed the consoles in Graphical output.

I'm not sure I'd enjoy that sort of gaming world, but I could see it happening.

The scenario described in the OP is in no way, shape, or form the "death of gaming".

That is what I am saying. There would be two options, big budget games continue to be made or developers forsake the risk and choose instead to target a larger market with cheaper games.

I also see little reason why $60 games couldn't end up on an ipad anyway. We are already up to $15-$20 from $1. It will sort itself out easily enough.

The attitude that there are no games on an ipad, or there couldn't be is to me a bit short sighted and focused on the smaller traditional games market. The Wii U looks like being exactly this sort of model. What do people will think will be easier, moving from $60 down to $30 or moving from $15 up to $30?

Not saying this is a good thing, but I think Apple can make it happen if they want. This thread really isn't about the ipad anyway. All it is saying is 'apple could make a console and kill off their competitors'.
They have a massive head start in the 'casual' market, market penetration and lock in through the app store, which is excellent.

So long as it uses proper controlls and not touch screen, then I dont see the problem if you can hook it up to your TV.

That being said, I hate apple products. Im not a fan of gaming on touchscreen devices either.

The only good game I have ever played on them is GTA3, a game made for consoles. Even then I couldnt figure out how to change the radio.

So how are these modern video cards and RAM necessary to run next gen games at 1080p supposed to fit in an ipad form factor in the next 5 years?

If every TV is going to have the capability of "talking" to other devices wirelessly, this would be pretty cool. Or does this imply that a person would have to have an Ipad and an Apple TV?

Well, it'll run games, but it will always be a gen behind.

iPad does have the benefit of releasing very often, so it can get yearly upgrades.

Is that good for developers? Hell no.

Pretty sure it can actually play RR2 in 1080p over the HDMI cable...

This does absolutely nothing for me. If I need a controller for something I'm going to want it on a bigger screen, that reminds me of 12-year-old me hunched over the 13" TV my parents "let" me use to play SNES ... no thanks. And if it's going to be "portable" I want the controller attached to the screen.

Honestly, the whole wireless controller for a 10" screen really makes me laugh when people say "it's the future".

No thanks. I don't want to have only a single source where I can purchase games from, nor do I want to spend 600+ for a console. Will stick to PC if this ever happens.

More reading between the lines here is needed.

Sure, in that post the quote is suggesting that we will be replacing our Xboxes and Playstation's with an iPad, but surely the larger message is that the Vita/iPad/XboxPortable/WiiU (well, Nintendo are nearly there anyway) will not be a 240v powered, stationary living room item.

Rather, I felt they were suggesting that the WiiU and iPad model is closer to what the next generation will be. A powerful system that can be plugged into the 50"+ monitor/TV for hometime gaming, but readily unplugged and taken away with you and not sacrifice the fidelity of the fun (beyond downsizing the screen).

I can't believe there are people against this? Especially given the Vita/iPad/3DS and WiiU are all well on their way to providing this, and people love these different thing already!

You're missing the 1080p streaming to the TV part.

Depends how you think of it. Ipad + 10 games or PS3 + 10 games?

Honestly, the whole wireless controller for a 10" screen really makes me laugh when people say "it's the future".

It'll happen. Microsoft and Nintendo will follow too. Look at windows 8 and the Wii U, you can see where everything is going (Sony 3rd party ;))

It still means games and gaming, don't be scared of a bit of change. The danger is people getting locked into an online service and having restricted choice.
Valve have had some statements on this recently and their concerns (touting a google android approach to offer an open alternative)

Yes it is. Unless big games are going to suddenly appear when we have no indication that it's going to happen.

Read the bolded in the OP again. Mike Capps isn't a moron. When he says triple-A games, he knows what that means.

You can get all weepy if you want, but it's common sense that all of this will be transitional, not the end of the world.

How expensive would an iPad with enough memory to store a few of the big current releases be? Mass Effect 3 is 14Gb on PS3 if I'm not mistaken. And that's not even taking into account how long it would take to download these games.
