Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

image.php

Would that actually be a practical way of holding the Wii U controller, at least with the dimensions they've shown before? It seems unlikely due to the size, especially because of the raised lip where the ZL and ZR buttons rest. Seems like a bad mock-up for the cover of a magazine.

Not to mention the game is apparently Link's Nipple Poke Training.

:p

That was shown at E3. It will depend on the game mostly, doubt they make Zelda or Mario to play like that.
But Wii Sports, Party, Wario Ware will.

Yeah it's logic, but i keep seeing some people expecting that, and for the moment, in the DRC used by third-parties in conjunction with v4 dev kits, there's no such things. And no ultra secret additional mind-blowing feature on the padlet, otherwise my sources would have surely told me about them. Now there's still the possibility that Nintendo didn't reveal all to third-parties, but it would be weird that huge functions are hidden this late in development to foreign studios, preventing them to integrate these from the start, from the initial stages of the title design.

You've used that acronym twice; is that an official abbreviation? Or just something you came up with?

The Wii U DRC. I like it much better than "U Pad", that's for sure.

I wonder how many people here seriously thought this thing would come even close to running UE4...

Nintendo fans never fail to amuse.

Umm... I'm a Nintendo fan, just as big of one as the most of you. In fact I'll even admit that I'm biased towards games from them or even exclusive games on thier platforms. I want them to succeed more then any other company in the world.

It just irks me when I go into Wii threads and everybody is like "graphics don't matter" then we have the same people in this thread praying for a strong console and shunning anyone saying anything "negative" about the Wii-U's power and praising anyone saying anything "positive" about the Wii-U's power.

A lot of you are just as bad as the trolls who said they couldn't play Wii games because they "didn't look good enough".

1241311768176.gif

Srsly, we got enough shit to deal with in here, let's not bring THAT into it.

Graphics matter, but they're so far down the totem pole as to be one of our least concerns. Ensuring it has enough power to gain multi platform games DOES matter. We talk specs because we feel that good tech = more games. That simple.

If that happens then the only one to blame is Nintendo for releasing a console that isn't powerful enough.

When we see MS or Sony rendering 2 images simultaneously with their console, then we can talk just how underpowered it is and if developers didn't have to make sacrifices on their platforms to achieve it. Until we see that? Saying it's underpowered is a fool's errand.

At this point I expected developers could come with more original excuses.

It's Kojima, when was the last time he did something original?

I'm getting the terrible feeling that Nintendo has ruined it's reputation with 3rd parties to the point that it won't be fixed.

Doubt it.

"Wii U is kind of a special case," Kojima said via translator at a press Q&A last week. "The way the player interacts with the device is very different than any other device out there. So if I were to make a game for the Wii U, it would have to be a unique game."

Compare this to what Crystal Dynamics said:"If we started building a game for the Wii U we would build it very differently and we would build it with unique functionality."

In other words, they don't want to work on Wii U.
I love Kojima's comment on Wii U, seems like that could be the standard excuse this time, similar to Crystal Dynamics' excuse.

And when games that don't use the subscreen in "unique ways" go on to sell high numbers, their respective publishers will go give them a smack for being so fucking stupid and costing them potential sales.

Mhm.. Kojima Productions wanted to release Rising on 360, PS3 and - surprisingly - on the PC.

Fox Engine is multiplatform.

Snake Eater 3DS proves that Konami wants to reach the Nintendo audience with MGS.

Thinking about it and saying the opposite a few pages ago - I think sooner or later we can see some port from a KP game.

If you can even call MG Rising a KojiPro game anymore. When they're so inflexible in their ability to design a game that they HAVE TO bring in someone else to do it for them or cancel it outright, it's hard to have a hopeful outlook about KojiPro. I dare say they'll work themselves into irrelevance faster than Square Enix could ever hope to.

I just realized.. after spending much of the last five years playing console games with my arms apread apart at a nunchuck-cord's length, it's gonna feel very strange playing games with my hands so close together again.

I liked having each arm independently free..

that just reminds me that the Wii U is going to be half a gen behind in terms of online infrastructure...

Most of the Wii games I play either support the CCPro (Monster Hunter Tri, MKWii, Brawl) or use just the Wiimote sideways (DKCR, NSMBW) so I won't really notice.

As a standard controller, I think the upad looks pretty cool. Stylish even, in the right light.

As a tablet, it looks crazy ugly. I can't explain it, but I hate how it looks in that picture.

Whatever do you mean? Didn't you hear? WoW is coming to Wii U! lolololololol

Damn Kojima!
I want my MGS game with subscreen codec ;(

That "using subscreen in unique games" is bullshit, it's not obligatory use it, Iwata even said that it's not mandatory for developers consider the subscreen.
Damn you, damn you, damn you!!!!!

As a tablet, it looks crazy ugly. I can't explain it, but I hate how it looks in that picture.

Probably because compared to a normal tablet, the controller looks like a tablet with a big, bulky, white border around the screen w/ controller buttons.

But why you played like that? :p
Unless it was Wii Sports or something with activities involved, I always played with my arms resting on my lap.

That throwing star game has always made me wonder: do the Nintendo Ninjas have a computer program that they use to hone their skills?

I wonder if Nintendo included that short segment as a silent nod to those of us who ponder the life of Nintendo Ninjas.

As a tablet it looks ugly cuz it looks cheap as fuck lol. Especially compared to actual tablets.

I don't care though, I have an ipad for real tablet duty. As long as it is a functional controller with useful shit on screen it's all good.

I wish nintendo would ditch the sterile white look. Either go super sleek and aggressive or go back to the days of yore and put some color in that controller and in that console. Design wise, my silver gamecube is probably my all time favorite console. The Wii came across as an imposing obelisk when it first debuted, despite its size and lack of processing power. Wii U just looks like...a box.

That wont be the case, they were just making fun of previous Nintendo consoles. According to the magazine, they will no longer be using friend codes with the Nintendo Network.

Besides that, the magazine didn't really say much. They had an Assassins Creed 3 bit but it was mostly ideas on how the controller could be use. They also had a Darksiders 2 preview but it wasn't Wii U specific.

Well we have seen that Nintendo goes with extremes. Nintendo doesn't want to go be in a "hardware arms race" so we get Wii. Nintendo takes offense to comments about colors so we get "another boring white box" or however Miyamoto said it.

I loved my platinum Cube. I still visit him when I go to my nieces and nephews' house. And I still keep several mint/wrapped platinum GameCube controllers in storage for future use with old gaming on the VC.

I wish for color though. A royal/deep/bubblegumball purple would look awesome.

<<< Mardi Gras, anyone!

And while I'm wishing, I'd love to be able to choose the color of the disc drive's light. I loved the Wii's drive light, and would send myself Wiimails just so that it would light-up..

Can't complain, then, but it's weird because I looked at some of the shots of people holding it afterward, even the official shots, and thought "No way."

Was also a bit confusing that you edited in your reply after I saw your post. I nearly skipped past it when reopening the thread.

Just to mention something else about the 3rd-party situation...

During the Wii reveal in 2006, Nintendo and the press trotted out a whole bunch of developers to discuss the Wii Remote, which went something like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UC_n_CxSZSk

And then when the honeymoon was almost over, the press talked to PUBLISHERS, which went something like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=oVEftcbAUUc#t=14s

Simply put, publishers had too much money already sunk into HD development to really put any resources into the Wii, and the flailing poorly-funded attempts by 3rd parties to capture ANY of that market are a testament to that.

And during E3 2011's sizzle reel, we heard from a lot more PUBLISHERS than I would have expected. So the 3rd party situation, I think, will be just fine.

In general, I like the way the controller looks. And one thing I've always noticed with Nintendo devices, is that all look better in person.

Even the DSiXL in pictures looks kinda rudimentary, but then on person is so nice and the screens are so ..big and bright. XD

This notion that we're all "graphic whores" is crazy. My most played game system of this generation was the Wii. I own a PS3, 360, a beefy PC, and a Wii. For the record, I have 3 Wiis in my house. I have over 70 games. On top of that, I never buy any of the Call of Duty games on the 360 or PS3. I own them all on the Wii. If I was concerned about graphics, then there would be no reason to pick up the Wii versions of those games. For me, the most important thing is control. Which is why I want the Wii remote in the Wii U box. This way I know I'll be able to get my motion control fix on the Wii U. Nice graphics are cool, but ultimately it comes down to how the game plays.

The Wii U doing 720p and 480p on the Wii Pad is fine by me. If the games look as good as the bird demo or the Zelda demo, then I'm okay with that. Anything else is gravy.

You sound as easy to please as I am.

I've always been a Nintendo-PC gamer, as I play two series on PC as a supplement to my console gaming: Elder Scrolls and Civilization. And while I enjoy PC graphics quite much, I'd love to see entries on those two series on Nintendo hardware (and mods for Elder Scrolls gaming while I'm wishing. And a bajillion dollars. And a pet Yoshi.). I'd even be willing to sacrifice those PC graphics for the Nintendo console interface/convenience/experience.

But, alas, it won't happen.

Oh, and it was Kojima's son idea of include Snake in Brawl.

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima and Sora Ltd. head Masahiro Sakurai are friends. So when Hideo Kojima wanted one of his most famous characters, Solid Snake, put into Sakurai's fighting series, Super Smash Bros., all the two had to do was talk. "When I was developing Super Smash Bros. Melee for GameCube, Hideo Kojima contacted me and practically begged me to put him in there, but at that time we were deep in dev and it was too late," Sakurai told Kotaku back in 2006. Snake didn't end up in Melee, but did appear in the Wii's iteration of Super Smash Bros.: Brawl.

So what drove Kojima to "practically beg" Sakurai to get Snake in the game? "My child likes Super Smash Bros., so we play it a lot together. And he told me that there's no character that you made in that game," Hideo Kojima told a group of interviewers late last week ahead of the Smithsonian's "The Art of Videogames" exhibit. Aside from his son's pleading, Kojima pointed to Metal Gear's low profile on Nintendo consoles as a second reason.

"As you know, we did make Twin Snakes, but generally speaking, there hasn't been a lot of Metal Gear on Nintendo platforms. So from that perspective, I thought it was a good way to expose younger people to this character, Snake," he said. It must be working, as Snake is one of Brawl's most popular characters.

Nice subtle "Nintendo teh kiddy" there

Looks like I was misremembering the "boring, white box" and it was instead a title for a thread made by shadyspace. But I think "appealing to all ages" would keep that desire from happening.

Yes. I don't see them suddenly leading the pack in this area, and you can expect something clunky to temper any of the improvements.

You mean like paying for the privilege to use it?

But in all seriousness... I expect no better or no worse than SEN/Live. It's a network infrastructure, not rocket science. And everything we see in the lead-up to NiN's announcements (mysterious Mii Plaza "accomplishments", communities in MK, using DLC as intended, talking retail games as downloadables, etc.) shows it's going to be pretty damn favorably compared.

if your expecting them to be the lead of anything outside of their normal scope of business then your looking to deep into what you think their online should be like. for that matter, i don't get why people like u find it necessary to nitpick a company that's been making games since the majority of us were either in diapers, pre-school, or kindergarten. do you make games? do u own a billion dollar company? then yes, your opinion doesn't matter.

Yeah.. I'm pretty much over him. He talked a number of times about how much he luuuuvs Nintendo, and how they've been such innovators, blah blah blah, *insert vague bullshit complement*

But when it came time to bring a decent title to the console? Bupkis.

So I don't take him very seriously. A bit too disingenuous towards Nintendo's home presence. He hasn't been significant on a Nintendo home console in a while
(and no - Snake's presence in Smash is nice, but that's about it - nice)
, so he isn't worth much consideration or attention in my book.

But could that work on the home console front?

I'm sure it could. Zelda-themed gold trim (maybe with different-colored rupees?) on a black or charcoal-colored console could be sooooo good. Especially if the disc drive lights-up to be gold-colored.

I'm assuming this is old (and I apologize in advance) but I'll post it for those who haven't seen it.

Kojima's thoughts on Wii U. He says Wii U is a unique situation:

http://www.shacknews.com/article/72928/kojima-says-wii-u-a-special-case-requires-unique-software
This shit is so frustrating to watch unfold.

Perception is important. Nintendo should make it a goal to get all the major fall/winter multiplatform titles on Wii U during the launch window period.
Get into bed with Kojima and Levine. Throw some money around if need be. Secure that Tomb Raider port. Hell, try and get some quick and easy ports of the big titles from the past year. Skyrim, Mass Effect...get them there at launch. They're boasting about NG3 and Arkham, so why not?

Given the reports about how easy porting to Wii U is, there's no excuse for third parties to avoid it simply because of perception that it's a family console, or for Nintendo to allow them to perceive it in that way. They should do everything they can to fight off the perception that third party games won't sell.

I believe that Yahtzee Croshaw said it best, and let's not forget his role as executive producer of one of the worst Castlevania games EVER, but the primary reason to not give him much consideration doesn't even fall on his individual failings for me. No, the reason to not give much consideration or attention to Kojima is this:

He continues to work for Konami willingly.

Because it's the exact same shit people said before the Wii launched.

Saying that they wouldn't make a Wii U game without 'unique ideas' is tantamount to saying that they won't make a Wii U game. Unless he's moneyhatted to high heaven by Nintendo, Kojima is not going to make a Wii U exclusive game.
There's no requirement for a Wii U game to take advantage of the tablet in an interesting way. At the end of the day, it's better for the console to see a bunch of Kojima ports where the touch screen is used for a giant additional A button than to see no Kojima games at all.
