Anyone else think Zenimax is pulling a Disney

The way they did Mars Need Mom, then John Carter (w/o Mars in the title) to wain away from the "Mars" thing, just to distance themselves

Now the higher ups @ Zenimax are watching the EA/Bioware Mass Effect 3 fiasco and going "Hey doesn't our game have Guns, Aliens and is in Space.... ZOMG! CANCEL, ABORT, I said ABORT!!!"

1 thing though RAGE frame rate 90% of the time was fucking crisp on my PS3, it was 60FPS or 30+ right, or were my eyes deceiving me
A few screen tears here and there, but if they had this shit right Prey 2 would've been drop dead gorgeous

Why would they cancel the game due to Mass Effect 3 reception? It sold loads of copies.

Human Head has done nothing since Prey, correct?

If so, and the cancellation is true, this would be uh... bad. Are they so small they don't have second string projects going at the same time?

Let's do this, it will be interesting just to compare. But let's limit it to two years.

So I started going through the FPS and it was easier to just pick out the ones that do have a sticky cover system rather than the ones that don't. I mean you have COD, Halo, MOH, Deus Ex, and Vegas(both Vegas and Deus Ex go into TPS when in cover) just for starters.

Not the selling, the bad publicity, gamers signing petitions, donating money to charities just to change the outcome of a video games ending

Sites talking about it constantly, good and bad

Zenimax suits might be going if it selling good and people are still bitching, what hope does Prey 2 have and with our track record we have with our new ip released titles isn't helping to pull the trigger, even if this is a sequel to make it look like it's a built/stable franchise

The game seemed really ambitious. I wonder if they just couldn't bring those ideas to reality in a game people would want to play.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
This might be one of the key examples as to why the kickstarter thing is going to be great for us: it doesn't involve nervous, greedy fucking shareholders with their fingers quivering over the button for any project that doesn't look quite AAA enough.

Fuck this industry sometimes, man. Just fuck it.

This is one of the silliest speculations I have heard, no one is going to cancel a game because a game from a different company in a different genre has some intenet backlash.

Mass Effect 3 is extremely popular with great sales and reception (from both fans and critics, the ending is the main issue) this makes no sense.

What is so different?

Guns, Aliens, Space, do you really think they went oh Mass Effect is a WRPG, Prey 2 is a Cyberpunk FPS with Space elements

This is really silly

Mass Effect sold well and Zenimax would kill to have even a fraction of the controversy Bioware stirred up

Why do gamers always assume cancellations are for reasons like "Oh we don't think anyone will like it" or "Oh this isn't going to sell like CoD"?

Mismanagement, money hemorrhaging, missing development goals... much more common reason.

With Mirror's Edge 2 out of the game, was really hoping this to make up for it, and the original Prey's fection was pretty neat too, very unfortunate.

Prey 2 cancelled, j/k, new name slapped on the game since tying Tommy in to this universe they created was just too restricting for what they wanted to do.

I think this will be the case, it won't be Prey anymore, a la Sleeping Dogs (Wich is shaping up to be pure gold BTW)

wasn't this game almost done?

I remember in Rage and Skyrim they had a little pamphlet/voucher about Prey 2.

I think RAGE definitely drew concern after how hard it bombed.

Well, the COD comments are thanks to comments being made by companies like Capcom. And I believe the Dishonored dev said something along the lines of their game won't sell as good because gamers are stupid.

It could be an unbeatable technical issue( a la original metal Gear Solid: Rising) , we don't know, I'll wait for an official statement.

That sounded more like an unbeatable creative issue. Which... well, if that were the case here then it'd probably be for the best to be quietly canned, since it'd mean there wasn't a good game to look forward to. Still, with how pigeonholed the genre's become drastically different FPS games are more necessary than ever. Kind of ironic that the popularity of the genre seems to be killing variety more than nurturing it though, but I guess that's what happens when it's a VERY SPECIFIC type of FPS that's stupidly popular.

Oh well at least there's going to be a COD coming out this year and the next :)

and the year after that :-D

that is all people seem to want now a days :(

This is even worse than when Disney canceled that promising Pirates of the Caribbean game.

At least Risen 2 should satisfy my thirst for Pirate-y adventure. Maybe that Dishonored game will be a suitable enough replacement for this one.

:(

I don't know you, but I like you.

Seriously. It's shit like this, the ME3 debacle, the journalism kerfuffle and the shit like DA2 that is severely lessening my enjoyment of this hobby of mine. I spent SUBSTANTIALLY less money this past year than in years past on it.

This stuff is why.

Why is it, that the best looking games. That seemingly bring the newest and innovative stuff get cut. Sometimes I just want to be done with the Industry... They toy with me too much :(

Is this confirmed at this point? I seriously hope not...after E3 last year it was one of my most anticipated games for this year :\

It isn't confirmed, but "No comment" in this industry generally means that it's true but they can't confirm it right now. The Doom 4 cancellation rumor was quickly shot down after it surfaced.

How much do you think they want the game to sell?  It's been in development since around 2009, and Arkane isn't a hole in the wall studio size wise.

I think some people there have fairly realistic expectations about this and some don't. Those who know the market they also know that it's fairly impossible for such a game to sell more than 2 million copies because that is their audience. Thief sold 500 000k copies, Deus Ex sold 500 000k too if I remember right. Since then they were hailed as classics and more people were exposed to the genre but still it's only two million gamers. That is what Clint Hocking wrote in his fantastic article about the genre. He wrote it months before Deus Ex sold exactly this number of copies - 2 million.

Clint Hocking said:
2001, with Saddam’s alleged weaponization of the PS2 and the launch of the XBox, the Console Wars had been declared. A generation of increasingly hardcore gamers who had grown up playing three games a year – with their headphones on, their noses pressed against their giant 21″ monitors, locked in their dorm rooms until 4am nightly – dismissed the idea of console games as being for kids. We didn’t play games on the couch. We didn’t want a broader range of games. We wanted fewer, deeper, better games – and bigger monitors so we might eventually be able to step right inside them and gorge ourselves on delicious Matrix steak. We wanted Immersive Sims and we called the shots because we were The Gamers. All two million of us.

this audience doesn't rely on TV adverts and stuff like that and they ALL will buy the game 1)if it is good 2) if they have time and there are no alternatives. Since there are at least two games (AssCreed is a bit different beast) coming in the same genre/vein it doesn't look that well for Dishonored. But still if the game is outstanding they will pony up or won't buy Hitman for example. Zenimax should move it to January-February though but this would hurt their budget hard and you don't want to blow your budget on this kind of game

Based on what I've heard, the game never really properly existed in the first place. As in, the completely matineed demo that was shown was proving hard/impossible to replicate, and they should never have announced it when they did.

Funny, I was just typing up a post speculating this was the case when I saw this.
Figures. The demo last year was only played by Human Head employees and was likely entirely scripted. If it was designed to put the game on the map and get people excited, mission accomplished. This thread is evidence enough of that. That doesn't stop it from being irresponsible.

It was probably too early for this concept. A shame.

It would not be surprising if that were the case. I think many in this thread don't understand that most competent studios could spend some time and make a really cool, but tightly controlled, eight minute long piece of gameplay, and talk about some great ideas and ambitions for the game along side such a demo. Making a several hours long game to match that quality, and carry out those ideas, and to keep it all from just being a repeat of itself, is where the real work is done.

Yeah: it was an entirely in-engine scripted matinee. Essentially, no gameplay there when they showed it, so... It looked promising from a proof-of-concept stage. But if it wasn't going to turn out like that, and Bethesda didn't like what it was going to turn out like, better to kill it now before marketing get properly involved...

I just watched the demo again and yeah, no way they could pull it off with OPEN WORLD this generation. Even as a corridor game like Mirror's Edge it would be hard. But with open world it's just impossible.

if they actually delivered the game it would sell a lot or at least it would have healthy sales.

A game like this would be a huge undertaking, but probably pretty possible if they targeted next-gen consoles and had a lot more RAM to play with.
