Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

I also don't think they'll pack that in either.
They'll do like with the 3DS. Pack in some little minigames that show off the system's capabilities.

It would be amazing if they pack in what we saw at E3 last year and what we might see this year

Plus the Bird Demo :p

I'm still not betting on a Mario game at launch. It doesn't matter how much YOU guys think they need it, they simply don't.
Having said that, even if it magically does exist at the time the system launches, there is no way in all the loving hells in the universe would it be packed in with the system as anything more than a demo amongst several high profile third party demos.

I disagree. Putting out a Mario game at launch pretty much guarantees a sell-out. After seeing the 3DS launch and what a disaster that was, I think Nintendo wants a major first-party game like Mario out there that makes people run out and buy the system.

I'm starting to think Wiiu will get mmo's. First was DQX, announced last year by SE. Then we have the Ubisoft mmo plus ghost reacon. Now Lucasarts rumored mmo game. Also that Cars online racer. I see Nintendo pushing Wiiu for online games you won't see on 360/ PS3.

Yep. For Nintendo, it's either:
- hold back on big first-party titles and risk lackluster sales: or,
- release big first-party titles and hear third-parties whine.

And I think they've learned to not depend on third-parties to come through. Sure, we'll see some nice stuff.. but nothing matches the status of a Mario game at launch.

But they'll be launching near the Holidays. There's no need whatsoever to blow a Mario game, especially if they're wanting good third party games to do well at launch.

That'd be great if Super Mario Bros. 4 hadn't come out 22 years ago.

It's just a weird situation, since Nintendo also promised a 2D Mario game for 3DS. I think given the strong performance of their handheld, their best strategy would be to delay that game and release on the Wii U for holiday 2012, unless the speculation about the two games being somehow linked is true.

edit: But just for funs, Pikmin & NSMBM in 2012Q4, Kart U in 2013Q4, Samsh Bros in 2014Q4 and Zelda in 2015Q4 -- that's my basic holiday seasons guess.

You mean the speculation that exists entirely in this thread?
And they promised investors (note, investors, not gamers) that the game would be out this Holiday. They won't delay it, let alone move it to the Wii U.

I'll put this another way.
Saying that Nintendo needs Mario at launch for the Wii U is basically admitting that they already failed in trying to expand their appeal with gamers and with third parties.

More like entirely in my own mind. :D

Ooooh, that's a good point about the investors.

Has Nintendo ever made a promise of that level to investors and not delivered it precisely?

They announced NSMB3 for 3DS for 2012 already. Not sure the 3D Mario team would have time to make a new 3D Mario by the end of the 2012 and releasing two Marios within the same quarter would be weird and maybe cannibalistic despite releasing on different platforms. They could have it on 3DS and WiiU, but I think they would have announced it for WiiU as well already if they were like they did with Smash Bros 4. I think trying to do some original first-party stuff (both "core" and "casual") + WiiUFit + Third-party ports/games for the first year or so until they get some big, traditional titles out would be a pretty good strategy.

Yeah, but you have to consider that Nintendo's leaving room (again) for third parties at launch.
Though I don't see them doing the same mistake twice we all know what third parties think about
Nintendo's software and a Mario game would literally cannibalize their potential sales.
It only would do more harm than good in the long run

A sub-series? sure why not... Sluggers, Golf, Tennis, Paper Mario, Strickers could work
but I'm not expecting a main Mario game till next year so...

My heart would not be broken to see another Strikers or Paper title. The last Paper Mario was quite, quite good.

I'm sure the wiiu really will be the console for mmos, with the tablet both offering whatever controls needed and solve the hogging the tv issues of several days of non stop anti social play

I see what you did there.

maybe a 3DS and Wii U like Smash bros? both have two screens and bottom one is touch, A 2D mario would be easy to do both and we know they will sell for both so why not?

Sounds good, but I kinda hope that there's something beefier released alongside Mario Kart to carry the season then. Maybe the Zelda HD Collection? :)

There're a lot of second-tier game series that could be given new entries, like …*thinks hard, but poorly*… Metroid MMO or Fire Emblem vs Capcom or Excite Zeppelin. Generally, you'll see Nintendo have one blockbuster release and another which is recognizable but not as mega-huge to flesh out the playing field.

edit: That game series that I listed as second-tier that you love dearly, I am apologizing here for calling it second-tier. It's actually really amazing -- I was just talking in terms of sales. The general gaming populace will never understand real games!
there, I'm safe from stoning now!

Yeah.. a surprise StarFox or Kirby-tier game would be great. Heck, I'd be delighted (and shocked) to see another Chibi Robo game.

They're not HUUUUUUGEEEE blockbusters but the system's sales would be healthy and third
parties wouldn't feel threatened by Nintendo's big boys.

You'd be surprised, actually.
People are sheep.

They only have to be told that it's the "best version of Xgame" and they'll buy it.

Right, that explains the success of the original Xbox.

Well with nintendo consoles, the point isn't having multiplats be the incentive, it's about having multiplats available for people who play nintendo games or other exclusives.

For the success of Nintendo consoles, the 3rd party lineup seems to be pretty much irrelevant. That's not too much of a surprise based on the much hyped and often still disappointing 3rd party offerings.

Because you get to play Nintendo's games as well? Definitely worth the extra 100 bucks as far as I'm concerned.

He referenced the great launch lineup about which we just don't anything apart from 3rd party titles. And I doubt that multiplatform titles will be much of an incentive to order the console, people want to have their next Nintendo killer titles.

And I still hope for the revival of Wii Relax, especially after Ubisoft killed Innergy/O.Zen, which was a pretty similar concept.

Once Pandoras Tower is out next week, theres no more Nintendo developed or published game for the Wii... Nintendo is in full WiiU production mode now.

R.I.P. Wii. May your successor please me at least as much as you did :)

Yes! It's been a long, long time.. but I could definitely go for that. Good boss fights! Man oh man..!

Works for me, although I've loved Paper Mario more..

They revealed it on E3 2010 and its still not out yet... 22 Month after its reveal... This game will be HUGE! (40/50hr maybe... plain speculation on my part though...)

God can you imagine how awesome it would be if GC games like Melee were available for the Wii U eShop Day 1? Upscaled a bit at that?

Shit would be awesome....

Which brings to the topic that Nintendo needs the Web Browser and the eShop needs to be ready at launch, none of this "wait 3 months" bull. The Wii U has to hit the ground running, not hit the ground and stall like this...

Poor Wii-U, more and more speculations and rumors of Wii-U getting weaker and weaker than even current-gen

Meanwhile rumors of PS4 and Xbox 720 are getting stronger and stronger with dual GPU's and 16 core CPU's

You surely have some faith

I say, good show! That is most intriguing!

Wich will continue to perish one by one if this trend continues.

Iwata said at GDC 2005 that the dev costs next gen would rise to an unhealthy level. Turns out, he was right...

That man knows the industrie inside out.

Always trust the man who programmed a baseball game in his calculator ;)
Now that the WiiU is coming, and apparently even more powerful than PS3/Xbox 360 (or at least ballpark), i wonder how he will solve this problem.

Ok, they have done some bad titles, but they also have their fair share of very good ones !

Just too bad that the distribution of "good" to "bad" for the Wii (particularly when contrasted with the others) is lackluster. Especially after apologizing for bad titles and promising more good titles in 2007.

But BG&2 would go a long way for good relations with Nintendo platform holders..

It's more probable than LucasArts project is Battlefront 3, as Rebellion appeared at the same time on those lists, and an online mode of this title could be tagged "mmo".

But it's still a possibility. The newly registered Deep Silver has also some MMO in its catalog.

Whats the point of this post?

Very good, i don't know
But creative, yes.
It seems they have themselves a lot of fun doing it (as seen for example in their presentation and roundtable at E3 2011), so it's already that :)

Isn't it in good hands???

Isn't Montpellier one of the better teams over there??

I don't know much about the actual people and lead designers on the game and what they did in the past.
