LTTP: F-Zero GX

X to sideswipe or Z to spin.

X is a very precise maneuver, where you hit it in conjunction with a direction on the control stick to take out a target directly next to you.

Z is a much sloppier spin move and is good for plowing through a tight crowded corner at high speed.

Many thanks. I shall have to test this out today and see if I can finally get past that fucking mission 7.

best racing game of all time
after outrun 2

me and my friend made the hour+ drive to play the AX version multiple times

Probably my favorite Gamecube game and likely the best racing game I've ever played. Playing the AX tracks was pretty cool, but they seemed super easy by the time you mastered all that you had to just to unlock them. I don't think I finished all the missions on very hard, though...

I absolutely adore this game. Also, I remember it being very difficult. I spent a lot of time in the garage editing racers. I'm pretty sure mine was called "Berserk Unicorn"

f-zero gx is a lean mean fighting machine and wipeout is a doddering old man.

Boooooo. F-Zero is a great franchise and GX a pinnacle, but it always strikes me how comments always come up from F-Zero fanboys denigrating WipEout. They have completely different styles and physics, but if you want to keep pulling on the block and tackle, then spooge away.

Just an unnecessary, sadly perennial broadside from F-Zero fans with nary return fire from the WipEout lads. Evident most recently in the WipEout discussion.

There's a dearth of ultra-high speed racing games of this ilk that we'd all be loving both series.

In any case, I haven't spent a lot of time with GX, but it's a fast and luxurious affair. SEGA are racing gods and we really need a racing renaissance where they ride the crest back to their former glory.

Incredible game. Unfortunately the soundtrack is weak compared to F-Zero and F-Zero X. Everything else about it is a huge improvement, though. I need to see if I can get this to run on Dolphin with 60 FPS (probably not).

hey, i'm just defending the homeland

In principle I can understand you, but the problem is, for me at least, that Wipeout at first looks a lot like F-Zero, but when you play, it's... slow, sloppy and boring. I'd so love Wipeout to be nearly as great as GX, I'd buy any PlayStation just for that - no matter what's the price of the console at the given time. Sad thing is: It just isn't :(.
Never played X. Had GX and loved everything about it except the difficulty. I ended up having to remove it from my house because it made me throw my Wavebird.

How is the difficulty in X, compared to GX? I might be tempted to get it on VC.

X is way easier, but still challenging.

I love both games about equally, and really think the poster above ought to play through more than just the slow classes of Wipeout!

But, that is probably the exact reason why F-Zero doesn't have speed classes in a similar manner to Wipeout. It's interesting cause in F-Zero they start the player off at the max speed, but anyone can still navigate the courses (and compete on easier difficulties). In Wipeout they basically have to put you in the slow ones first or else only pro's can handle the ships/courses. As someone who's played Wipeout since the beginning, there's nothing i hate more than having to unlock the faster classes!

I certainly appreciate the replies on the almost unavoidable comparison and need to throw one's hat in one camp or the other for sheer requirement of time to master, gents. I can understand on a very slight level about preferences, but there's a remarkable gulf in feel between the two.

F-Zero is very twitch/pinpoint and there's an immediacy to control. WipEout is very much about inertia and weight, where I'd say there's much more emphasis on wrangling the physics of the craft.

But hey, back to the LTTP. I shall say no more!

Why compare F-Zero to Wipeout? Wipeout is more of a Mario Kart style racer, surely? F-Zero feels like what it's billed as. A futuristic Grand Prix. It's not the aesthetic that makes games similar, but how it plays.

Controls that are that can be instantly grasped and enjoyed by a beginner but still taking a lifetime to fully master is automatically better than something which only becomes fully enjoyable once you take the time to understand and get used to it, in my book at least.

Playing Wipeout for the first time recently seriously confused me, I had to check through all the tutorials to make sure I wasn't missing some major aspect of the controls. The incredible presentation of the whole game told me that it couldn't just be faulty design, this sluggish sloppiness to everything must surely be a deliberate design choice by people who very much knew what they were doing, yet I was still in disbelief, I had to look around online to confirm to myself that there were indeed communities of enthusiasts of these games who swear by the controls.

I eventually got a hold of them and moved up a couple speed classes, but it still wasn't fun. And trying out the fastest class before I was ready just felt like watching a video of the slow class sped up, it didn't actually "feel" like driving an incredibly fast machine.

I have to go back on my word of not uttering any further, but the last thing I'd describe WipEout controls as would be 'sloppy' or 'sluggish'. I think they perfectly convey a large jet-powered chassis bobbing a metre or two off the ground. Canard intakes to slough and bomb such a craft around corners in frictionless elevation feels great, and moreover, each craft in WipEout has a distinct personality or feel. It's very much about the interplay of control response, inertia and physics. F-Zero is zippy, the craft aren't encumbered by the emphases found in WipEout.

I'll throw in a video of Zone mode from WipEout HD. Just because I'm confused at some of the sloppy and slow comments.

What's more, and perhaps not as appreciated as it should be, but with each speed class in WipEout, track part and design feels different to an extent. Corners and subsequent chicanes become a different steering challenge.

No more derailing. Back to F-Zero.

EDIT: NO, WAIT! Here's something that both parties will enjoy. And keep the jabs of "Well, that speed is befitting of WipEout! Hur hur!" to a minimum, it's a prototype! :D

Now compare this to this (not even a good driver...): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qP6Qi-WfTw or even this (admittedly an excellent driver): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqvL2DJjy8k&feature=related

Out of these three, imo, Wipeout feels the slowest, even though being on a way superior platform, I' d absolutely expect it to be a lot faster than GX, or at the very least equally fast. Which, from my experience, it absolutely is not. I'd say, even Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Generations feel faster than Wipeout, albeit being platformers and not futuristic racers.

On topic I'd love a new F-Zero for Wii U that would try to be as fast as possible on that kind of hardware! It's be incredible.

Scalextric needs to get on this, STAT!

On the subject of controls, one of my friends couldn't play GX at all until he adjusted the analog sensitivity. The fact that the crafts slip out while turning at the highest of speeds is about the only thing that makes them feel like real vehicles (might). But i like how the side attack will snap it back into line, a carry over from F-Zero X.

Many thanks. I shall have to test this out today and see if I can finally get past that fucking mission 7.

try to time the side attacks carefully, unlike FZX, you can lose control here easily and smack a wall.

side attacks as a whole feel worse than in FZX. they're still workable when you get the hang of it but FZX's version was much easier to use (and CPUs died way easier too in that game)

I thought so at first but when i went back to FZX later, they felt a bit sluggish by comparison. GX lets you send a racer flying across the course even if you're only slightly pushing the analog left or right. In FZX, you really have yank the control stick to kill someone (if you're racing side by side) turning it more into a barge. Both awesome mind you :)

Chapter 8 is just as hard as 7. I keep getting so close but the fucker just about beats me on the last lap.

ch8 is very easy compared to 7. try to pass him on a straight and build a good lead and keep going constantly fast and he never catches up.

I absolutely loved the first Wipeout and 2097, but the actual racing controls / mechanics and track design in FZXG are the best I've ever come across in a futuristic racing game. Time Trials in this game are pure perfection. It's amazing how much you can get from the default Blue Falcon ship once you really master the game and the track. Having said that, the custom ship mode works well too. FZGX is easily one of my all time favourite games.

Finished the story mode yesterday. Every chapter was awesome and offered a level of challenge. I just need to go through each cup on hard on Grand Prix. I think the Diamond Cup might be my favourite, especially the first 2 levels.

Looking at the requirments needed to get the AX content......I don't think I can do that. I'm going to have to punk out and use Action Replay to unlock the levels.

I loved this game to death, probably my second most played game on GC behind Smash Bros but definitely my favourite looking back.

The gameplay is pretty much untouchable but I gotta say the story and characters are so cringeworthy... if they make another F-Zero game (YOU BETTER NINTENDO!) they better not touch the gameplay or artists responsible for the track design, but goddamn take a good hard look at the characters (some of the vids you got for beating the game with specific characters were downright embarrassing :\)

I was stuck on Chapter 6 for far, far longer. I would get to the last stretch and just fuck it up every time.
Chapter 6 was the one where there was a bomb stuck on your vehicle, right? That was one of the easiest chapters IMO. Just set the top speed to the lowest setting and don't hit the walls/sides.

OK guys, I am only going to say this once. This is MY opinion and it WILL not change....

When running in the Dolphin emulator, at 1920x1080 resolution, F-ZeroGX, is the...

*MOST. BEAUTIFUL. LOOKING. VIDEOGAME. EVER. MADE.!!!*

No, I am not being sarcastic and no I am not exaggerating in ANY way shape or form! I have played and seen EVERY graphically impressive game out there.....Crysis, Uncharted 3, Skyrim with Mods, Witcher 2, GT5, Battlefield 3, MW3, etc etc etc......none and I mean NONE of those games looks as GORGEOUS as F-ZeroGX running in Dolphin at 1920x1080!

I just bought a new front projector. It is the very first display I have owned that supports 1920x1080. I was previously on a 720p projector and the jump to 1080p was absolutely incredible in this game!!!!!!!!!! MY FREAKIN' GOODNESS!!! F-ZeroGX looks soooooooo fucking good I honestly cannot put it into words! The emulator dolphin unlocks the true resolution of the game's textures, making them look like NEXT GEN graphics!!!

Please everyone, if you get a chance, play F-ZeroGX in Dolphin and set the display resolution at 1920x1080 and make sure you set the *internal* resolution at 4x native(2560x2112). I get FULL ROCK SOLID 60fps pretty much EVERYWHERE.

*sigh*....I just don't know what else to say guys. The game is exceptionally beautiful and the best looking videogame I have ever gazed my eyes on. Period!

It might be my favorite racing game of all time. Absolutely incredible.

Yup. Same here.

I consider myself pretty bad at most games. Especially racing games. I don't know how I mastered all the Arcade cups. Loved this game. Intense as all hell.

Thirty player online please.

I have a friend who picked up the game and played through everything including Story Mode on hard in two weeks. I was never so impressed with a gaming feat.

Tag quote?

I mean, look, opinions are opinions, but I just watched from 1080p videos of it on YouTube...and man, it's far behind most modern showpieces. I think there's some rose-tint going on. = P

The Hedgehog Engine seems like a pretty specific bit of middle-ware, but I bet it would work for F-Zero if Nintendo lets SEGA make another.

Another poster checking in to say that F-Zero GX is my favourite racing game of all time.

The Story Mode is BS, though. While the rest of the game has non-rubberbanding, completely fair AI, Story Mode is filled with overly scripted enemy behaviour that makes the levels an exercise in memorization-heavy frustration. I'm convinced that the game failed commercially primarily because of Story Mode, in fact.

One of the best games ever. Sad that we're still waiting for a successor. Beat the whole thing in Grand Prix mode with the White Cat, just as I did for F-Zero X.

I'm the biggest Nintendo dickrider out there but fuck Nintendo in the ass for not having a sequel or whatever to this game. I hope it was because they deemed that F-Zero needs HD.

Yes, best racing game ever.

I spent a month playing the game on an off to get the AX cup. When I did it was one of my greatest gaming moments. I was happy in the pants.

The graphics hold up well even today. Would love an HD version.

I couldn't tell you how many times I played this level before I realized that the big tube sticking out of the track that I kept running into was the tube I was driving through earlier.

Similarly, there's the one Lightning track where you go through this tunnel, and it took me a while to realize that I was driving on the roof of the tunnel when I came the other way.

The tracks in this game are so amazingly well designed.

I loved Gx and played the fuck out of it, but I prefer and think Fzero 64 is a litte bit, though, I couldn't tell you why.

That's the first Lightning track, Loop Cross.
