Nothing will ever surpass Halo 3's hype.

Edit: Maybe Halo 6.

I think you're right. We've had bigger launches since Halo 3, but the sheer media frenzy and marketing is pretty unparalleled. It *felt* like a big deal, which is more than the latest CoD game coming out can say.

For Activision it doesn't matter, even with minimal marketing it will sell a shit-ton.

Not sure why, but I haven't been this hyped for a Halo game since Halo 2, surprisingly....is it because it's a brand new trilogy?

Anyone else feel this way?

It's the sequel to Halo 3, which was five years ago (!!!). Chief is back, new team with an ambitious new vision and creative direction for the series. It sounds like the biggest feature set reboot since Halo 3 as well, and perhaps even more so. I need details before I'm whipped into a lather, but the potential is off the charts.

Yep that's it :)

Halo 5 will be huge, on new hardware.

A question, what were you guys more excited during the Halo 3 hype, the campaign or the MP?

For me it was the campaign, and it's mirrored this time as well, though spartan ops seem's to be raising a few eyebrows from me (amongst other things).

That Halo 3 reveal trailer still gives me goosebumps. "I am your shield, I am your sword" and "This is the way the world ends" followed by the trumpet fanfare is incredible.

My pops was exited for singleplayer (my dad likes Halo, yeah he is one cool dude) and I was for multiplayer.

The campaign no doubt. I was so engrossed in the story with Halo 1 and 2, bought all the books, my hype for the story was unmatched.

Then I played the game. Because of that disappointment, it took me nearly four years to look past the story and appreciate the actual game.

Can I say both? I was super excited for the campaign because that's what the majority of my Halo playtime had been up until then. On the flip side, I had watched the multiplayer ViDoc at least three times a week. Then the weekend right before the game came out, a good friend of mine had a Halo 2 LAN and we played 8v8 Terminal, Waterworks, Lockout, Midship, etc. until 4am(which is in fact super late when you're a freshman in high school).

For Halo 4, the campaign is sounding super exciting. The multiplayer sounds okay, but I really want my Halo 2/3 gameplay easily available.

EDIT: For Reach, it was definitely the MP though. The campaign had potential, but it wasn't nearly the amount of potential that MP had. It's too bad they both fell somewhat flat.

I'm always 10x more excited for the campaigns than multiplayer.

I still enjoy the multi, I just love the Halo lore more than anything. And Chief and Cortana are superb as a pair.

Yup. But in terms of feature set and creative direction, I think this might be the biggest reboot, at least, so far.

Campaign. I was so hyped for the story. Ultimately it was the missions and encounter design that I loved.

Last time I got ranked in Arena I got 45% Onyx (Dropped down to 65% because I didn't play anymore). And that was after playing the minimum amount of matches required.

The difference in what you, kyle and juices are doing now... and then... is number of players in the list. The divisions are distributions... fewer players in the list, mean fewer players in each division.

I've seen several folks say it's all about wins/losses now and ratings don't matter... I'm not sure where they pull that from, but from what I understand your daily ratings are what place you in a division. You are still compared to whom you are playing. If it were all about wins/losses then going undefeated would have you in Onyx - that's doesn't necessarily happen.

I don't think it takes any longer for trueskill to "work" in Arena. Rate poorly against bad kids and win (relative to others in the game)... and it will take longer to reach Onyx for sure. Rate highly and you should be seeing Onyx folks on your last day of rating. That scenario has been true for me every season I've played Arena... even this one. Kyle and I went in with just use two recently. It was my fifth day of ratings... and as expected, we matched against kids who were Onyx after our first game and got dumped on because we had a couple silver guys. Typically, I see Iron on the first, Bronze second, Silver third, Gold fourth, and Onyx fifth - depending on number of games and where my daily ratings ended the previous day. Both seasons I played I qualified in single digits in Onyx but as others, the number slid from lack of play.

If you want to hit Onyx quickly, it's almost better to go in without 4 heavy hitters so that you rank first or second every game on your team and maximize your ratings.

Personally, I play through campaign once or twice, spending maybe 20 hours total. Then I play multiplayer for HUNDREDS of hours, so yeah, multiplayer is what I'm looking forward to most.

Campaign as i didn't originally intend to even sub to Xbox Live. It's a fucking console, not a multiplayer machine. Didn't take but a couple of weeks from Halo 3's launch when i subbed to Live and started playing...

I was hyped for Reach's campaign too though in retrospect i think it is among the worst campaigns (regardless of genre) i've ever played.

As for Halo 4, it is hard to say if i'm more hyped for the campaign or Spartan Ops...

EDIT i played MP far more in Halo 3 and Reach than the campaign and no doubt this will be true for Halo 4 as well but it is still the campaign i'm excited to see. Please let there be a lot of glitches in the campaign like in Halo 2, exploring the map outside play-area is fun...

I spend more time in MP, but I find myself looking forward to Campaign the most. There's just something special about playing through a Halo campaign for the first time, over the first few days. It's that experience that is at the fore of my mind as we approach a new Halo launch. When it's through, I turn to multiplayer (or Spartan Ops, more likely).

Hopefully Forge isn't Bungiefied to become Grey Block Simulator v0.032 (alpha) again. Also, dedicated servers please. Let me pay for Halo 4: Elite where I get dedis and proper matchmaking. If Gears can do dedis, Halo can do it. Playing P2P makes me feel like I'm living in a Brazilian favela.

Yeah, I share Woorloog's sentiment too.

All fantastic characters, too little time, should have focused on the large scale battles and eventually a very throwaway campaign.

It could have been better, but I just can't get behind the notion that it's one of the worst campaigns of any game ever. Too much a stretch there.

I'm always the most excited for the campaign in Halo, even though I play multiplayer the most. I think most of my friends don't even touch the multiplayer before they've finished the campaign.

It may sound irrational but I can't imagine playing a Halo 5 and 6 - it just feels kind of Final Fantasy-esque. Even Halo 4 is pushing it a bit for me but I guess there's the whole brand recognition thing to it, especially after ODST and Reach.

But seriously, Halo 6? Just sounds kind of ridiculous.

hur hur, Halo: Modern Warfare

edit: to clarify, I'm talking about the numbers in the title, not the amount of games!

The Sabre section was hyped so much.... and fell so flat. The space combat wasn't interesting at all. Th variety was nice and all but it just feels like such a wasted segment.

Let's not forget the rail-shooter segment.

Great idea, poor execution. It would've been remembered more fondly if you were fighting alongside the Pillar of Autumn and helping it escape.

Yeah. I think the two big issues with it are how isolated it feels - not part of a larger battle, just an isolated encounter - and the structure.

Wave 1: Banshees!

Wave 2: Seraphs!

Wave 3: Seraphs and Banshees!

Wave 4: Phantoms!

Literally treated as waves, with announcements of the next wave coming in. It was Firefight in space, not a space battle.

Even from a canon point of view, I thoght it was sooo weird that Noble 6 was this pilot for this top-secret operation. It sounded as if you were one of a kind. As cool as it was to see, seeing more Sabres launch seconds after you was a weird feeling. ONI having secret programmes inside secret programmes is odd too.

Not sure how factually correct I am being, it just comes across that way to me :p

I agree. It felt great early on, but as soon as the pattern showed it started getting boring. It's still in the top 5 for my favourite missions, maybe just because of the nice vistas.

Whaaa?

Honestly I thought Reach had the most cohesive plot and gameplay in the campaign since Halo 1. It actually seemed like there was an overall narrative to the story, and it wasn't changed a few times during production.

I didn't like that they changed the fiction from what the book stated, but it felt like a whole solid story in my opinion.

yeah 3 was bananas for me. 2 as well but not as much. I just realized though that I'm excited for 4, but I just don't get as excited :p as I used too, about video games, or even movies. Maybe I'm just an old grumpy ass adult. 5 years changed a lot.

I barely remember any of the levels in Reach.

I remember the Sabre section, those beast things on the night level, a horrible encounter with Hunters on the last (?) mission on legendary and some kind of vehicle section where I had to disable some spires.

Considering I played it once on Heroic solo, once on Legendary solo and once Legendary co-op, I don't think it's the best sign in terms of campaign quality.

It's a shame though because it felt very tight and well put together relative to the other campaigns and graphically it was the best. Just unfortunate that, like has been mentioned, it was entirely forgettable.

Oh, and I also remember that the last mission was terrible.

Man I remember being crazy excited while playing Winter Contingency thinking it would be an amazing campaign with encounters and awe inspiring scenarios like Halo 1 (even made an hyperbolic gaf post at the moment that someone threw on my face somewhat recently), but then that level just turns uneventful and short, and then there's a series of missions where you're really not doing anything but small time errands.. then the campaign picks up at the end but in a very akwardly paced and anticlimatic way. Bah, awful campaign.

Aside from the music complaint and the insults towards 343i (even with the disclaimer) this was really good. :lol

I shudder to think of the very last encounter on a difficulty higher than Normal.
