Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

Not that I really care about fighting a console war, we do have some official word about the audio chip, it's also not really all that surprising as Gamecube and Wii have both had them, so if I need to go dig up the evidence, I will... but it's really common sense at this point.

Bias overrules common sense, unfortunately.

Damn.. you really haven't missed a beat while you were gone. I'm impressed. :)

I find that it generally isn't worth it to engage..

Things were like this before my account was even approved. lol

Yeah, that's the point I'm making. It generally just derails the thread for 2-3 pages and goes nowhere.

SPEAKING OF WHICH THIS IS INFORMED SPECULATION BASED ON WHAT I HAVE HEARD DEVELOPERS TALKING ABOUT LATELY

DO NOT TAKE THIS AS FACT AND DO NOT START CHICKEN LITTLEING BECAUSE OF THIS POST. EVEN IF EVERYTHING I HAVE HEARD IS 100% ACCURATE, THERE COULD BE REASONS IT WILL NOT HOLD TRUE FOREVER.

I'll say that you should not expect the moon with the Wii U.

Everything I have been told is "best of the current generation by a country mile but not significantly beyond that."

It is the XBox to the PS2. The Gamegear to the Gameboy. The Mad Men Alison Brie to Community's Alison Brie. It'll look better, but generational transition probably won't apply to it.

On the plus side, there will probably be nothing hardware-wise stopping downgraded ports from what people think the new XBox will offer. We're talking, like, Witcher 2 on high settings vs. Witcher 2 on low settings. Same game, same basic idea, different graphics.

But games that do take advantage of the Wii U's hardware are going to blow this current gen out of the water. I am not sure we'll see that at E3 (seriously, think back to nearly every console's launch, most of those titles don't stand up today), but I'm sure we'll see it eventually.

That seems in line with other current rumours around WiiU capability and performance. Although Ideaman said from what he heard that we can expect games that are rendering rich information to the padlet would most likely run at 720p due to performance constraints.

Between the two bits of information, if both are accurate, seems to narrow in on a performance range and target of the new console.

You're going to fight a losing battle here. He's going to ask for an official spec sheet to prove it, and we don't have that.

Me
No RE6 on Wii U
Me
Aliens is "not a port"
Me
ShockingAlberto's sources said something along the lines of PS360 ---> Wii U being similar to PS2 ---> XBox and then The_Ayertosco said that it's equal to 360 but with more RAM
Me

...so, a LOT of u is there... (btw welcome back)

- no RE6 on Wii U?? -> I doubt that, really think we will see it for release...
- So Aliens will benefit from the Wii U power?!
- basically there is no news about specs or tech of the Wii U? or is there something new?
something that is really shocking? Alberto? anyone? :))

All this comparing WiiU to PS3, 360, PS4, 720, PC, Wii, Vita, Dreamcast and NeoGeo Pocket is making my brain hurt :-(

Also, holy crap, BP is back! Just when I thought this thread couldn't get crazier.

Aliens will look very similar to the HD Twins version. Some higher res textures, maaaaybe a higher resolution.

I read all of that as exactly what IdeaMan said and contrary to the recent <=360 rumors. Glass half-empty vs half full, I guess?

Yeah. The below 360 performance rumour was hardly credible. I think folks are going to be surprised at what Ninety shows at E3.

I'm looking forward to seeing some NDA's lifted. It would be nice to be able to gauge third party support and hear them talking up the WiiU in terms of graphics and padlet controls.

They should release a Wii U game, where your main objective is to speculate about the successor to the Wii U.

It's got online support.
Team up with other rabid Nintendo enthusiasts and bullshit for hours through the Wii U's video chat.

Does anyone think Nintendo sees a trend in tablet gaming and is hoping to have developers choose iOS and Wii-U development over PS4 and Xbox3?

If that's the case, the PS4 and Xbox3 might be the system getting up-ports, much like how Xbox and Gamecube got up-ports of PS2 games. Heck, developers will do that just because it would be massively cheaper to do. And with the current trends of developers going out of business over one bad game, I could see this happening.

It was credible, but it's painfully obvious at this point that at least part of the issue is lack of optimization.

So, best case is probably 3x 360, worst case is 1.5x. (I like numbers, don't hurt me.)

I've posted before that I think Nintendo is trying to tap-into the popularity of tablet gaming, the tablet interface, etc. I think they're also going to push the "enjoy your home console while your TV is freed-up" element of the system pretty heavily.

Whether third parties recognize that Nintendo is trying to tap-into these trends or not.. I don't know. I'm naturally skeptical of their judgement, so it wouldn't surprise me if they instead go for the more powerful consoles. Because being able to see each asswart hair on an ogre individually rendered is totally worth going bankrupt, and gaming systems without such power automatically suck.. right?

In my defense, I'm on here all day at work.. and I've gotten through a fair number of games in the past few months, while having this thread opened in a tab on the iPad on my coffee table while I'm gaming. The final year of each Nintendo console is usually when I try to replay through old favorites and/or clear my backlog; it's usually a pretty good year for gaming. :)

If we get 720p with locked 60fps for most multiplat games, that would be great.

Lol. That remains to be seen ;)

Just a reminder... Could you imagine what a company that made THIS :

on an overclocked Gamecube, could do on a machine with a power greater than PS360?

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
I know I keep repeating myself, but at least in the short term, Nintendo just has to be able to show a game this E3 that is clearly better than current gen stuff. It doesn't have to be a launch game or anything, but an absolutely gorgeous 1st party game could give Wii U the positive buzz- 3rd party efforts and the controller won't do it IMO.

So many people in here with friends breaking NDAs... :s

Actually, specs\power level wise everyone is talking. Features speaking, my friend told me that Nintendo was quite annoyed by the leaks on the WiiU and that they announced it way before the original plan. Then, every new tech or feature the WiiU\tablet may have, they don't know anything because Nintendo went on super-stealth mode even with developers (at least with his studio, don't know about the other ones). So, if there will be news o amazing features, they will know when Nintendo announce them (at E3 probably).

I remember reading somewhere that the reason Mario Galaxy was built on little worlds was due to performance reasons to limit the amount of geometry.
I'd love to see a something with that level of quality but in a huge open world at 1080p at 60fps with good quality AA. That's absolutely the high end but I don't think Ninety will get there.

I have to re-post this (I posted several weeks ago):

In the EDGE magazine (#238 March 2012 with Far Cry 3 in the cover) they made a feature about the first year of the 3DS (Nintendo 3DS: one year later). They interviewed several developers and when I saw this I couldn't believe what I was reading:

EDGE Quote:

"What happened? For starters, 3DS simply wasn't ready for release. Its digital game store, the eShop, didn't open for business until three months after the system was in players' hands. Worse still, developers working on the system didn't have enough time to prepare properly -those making launch games for the 3DS weren't even aware that stereoscopic 3D was a feature. Julian Gollop, Xcom creator and lead designer of Ubisoft Sofia Studio's 3DS launch game Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, recalls just how in the dark designers were. "The biggest shock to us was when Nintendo revealed that the upper screen would have stereoscopic 3D, even though we had been using the devkits for a while already"

So, Could be Nintendo hidding key features of the WiiU to delevopers? I'm pretty sure they are. Don't forget E3 is in June and the launch of the Wii U will be in October-December so if they reveal something new they will have time to fix their games to incorporate that.

In my opinion there are very few western developers who really knows how the Wii U end up being. Peter Moore is one of them (He personally traveled to Kyoto to see how things were evolving) and he was very happy after the trip.

I don't get GAF's 60fps fetish.

Having played SM64 under emulation at 60fps and then playing it on my original N64 at around 20 - 30fps. The difference is quite noticeable and really improves the gameplay experience.

I think that it can be different with the big names of the industry by the way. I don't know about the big plan but only the small pieces of the puzzle.

Talking about the N64...

The PAL N64 ran 17% slower than the NTSC ones. When i was used to PAL speeds and went to my friend with an NTSC-U Nintendo 64... man... It was like mario was on speed... quite literaly...

BTW, both Super Mario Galaxy games ran on 60fps aswell!

This is one of my least favorite of Nintendo's habits. It's poor form, and it gives ammo to the whole "Nintendo mistreats third parties" line.

They're so paranoid the competition will copy them. Guys, they're gonna copy you anyway. May as well get developers in the loop.

Don't get me started. I remember playing SM64 in HMV prior to launch. The game looked amazing. Full screen. Fast. Jaw dropping amazing.

Went to the midnight UK launch. Got the machine home. Plugged it in. Slapped in SM64 and WTF. What's with the boarders and slowdown. I then subsequently found out that Ninty didn't bother optimising the PAL releases.

A week later I sold it and a got a US machine. Cost me a fortune for import games but was so worth it and I've still got it and play it from time to time. Still my favourite console of all time and I love the design of it with it's curves and almost mat black finish.

Not really true, the pal n64 ran at the same speed just most games werent optimised for pal tvs

I didnt have that option of importing back in the day. I got 120 stars on it even in the pal slowmode ;) Took me month and i didnt have a guide... Man i was so proud :D

I will revisit the Galaxy games soon (Need to pass time till E3). I will tell you when i get so SMG2, but i remember a few stages being quite lengthy. Can't tell you exactly wich ones atm.

They ran slower. I had the opportunity to check that by myself (I had a pal N64 wioth Mario 64 and my friend, who is american, had the NTSC-U one...)

I remember an article stating that the PAL games run slower aswell due to poor PAL optimization of the HW.

I do. Nothing on PS2 even comes close to Ninja Gaiden, Doom 3, Conker, or the XBox version of Chaos Theory. With those shader capabilities, it was practically half a generation ahead techwise. There had never been such a stark difference between two consoles of the same gen before that, and not counting Nintendo holding back we'll probably never see anything like it again. If Wii had the XBox's graphics tech combined with Wii's increased horsepower, a lot more people would have been satisfied with Wii's graphics.
Dont forget the Neo Geo AES :)

Yep, it is the same with NES and SNES too. With some games it is not much noticeable, but with others, there is indeed. I never been bothered with it though.

EDIT: Come to think of it, maybe not with SNES, but the PAL NES CPU ran at a bit slower speed at least compared to the NTSC NES.
