NPD March 2012 Sales Results [Up3: ME3 Total, Binary Domain]

probably not, but motion tech isn't what sold people alone on games. look at the move.

it was definitely a combo of having the right hardware, the right software, and the right marketing.
I'm saying that without the Wii-Mote what would have been any different about the Wii from the Cube and 64. The Wii has the same amazing stable of first party games but so did the other consoles. Just like those other consoles 3rd party support has been abysmal. The Wii-Mote along with Wii-Fit allowed them to pull in a mass market of people that wouldn't have been around to buy Mario Kart and such.

Also Move doesn't work as a example since it was just chasing the success the Wii had already established. There was no wow factor with the Move simply the promise of better controls plus HD graphics which for a lot of people wasn't compelling at all.

But there IS new stuff out there. The Vita is brand new and only sold 200,000 or so it's first full month. It's bound to plummet next month.

Lol. People on Gaf said the same thing on February´s NPD. I think chris1964 said the Vita will do around 150k or something. Others said the Vita won´t sell shit next month. Now people are saying, just wait some more. It´s really funny.

I think I've heard the exact same thing last month.

Anybody who said that was a fool because only 4 days were included in last month's NPD. Now we've gotten a full 5-week month. Next month is basically guaranteed to be a big drop, especially with zero new big games coming out.

Binary Domain could have done better as a digital title for $30 with less emphasis on story telling. Honestly, these kinds of "aaa" experiences need to stop. sooner or later (after many more companies close, no doubt), the industry will figure it out. it's just too cutthroat and competitive. leave it alone.

Binary Domain should have had an awesome cover, been marketed to the shooter/scifi crowd and released at a lower price than 60 freaking dollars. Most reviewers didn't even get a review copy for crying out loud.

Again, read my previous post. Only 4 days on that NPD and now a full 5-week month, along with a release schedule of nothing for the next month. It's guaranteed to drop.

I think a vita RE game would have done much better actually. Hopefully they will bring the franchise to vita soon

This thread sure changed fast from the first few pages of I'm waiting to see how much vita bombed

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I wonder if this will soften their support for the system, at least when it comes to big budget exclusives.

I think big budget exclusives focused on Japan ( such as MH, DQ, Tales of, and others ) will be fine. Let's see if we'll see other big budgeted exclusives WW ( I mean, also in the West ) after Revelations.

The general public wasn't clamoring for a new iPad but they wanted it once it was announced.

Every time somebody compares the iPad to a video game system the same thing needs to be said:

Apples and oranges. The comparisons need to stop.

Ye..a few posts above/earlier.
Misleading information, it's LTD (i.e. February + March); not March only.

You did not say 150k, but you said this. Just admit it. Your wording clearly suggested that you think the Vita will sell much less this month. That was not true at all.
Well, he was technically right.
Vita sold 225k in 4+ days of February (+ = because of the FEB bundles), and it sold less than that in the whole month of March. He was kinda vague more than anything. :p

Probably not, considering other upcoming software they have for the system, and the current success of MH3G. It's done well in Japan, and we don't have EU numbers. I wouldn't call it a true bomb yet, particularly if it has legs and continues to move units over the next couple months. At worst it would mean that we won't see another handheld RE this generation, or at least on the 3DS anyway.

You seem upset. Why is that?

not really

I don't understand how the PS3 is selling those kind of numbers. Nothing big released this past month right?

Same reason 360 sells. It has a lot of games, will continue to get a lot of games, and it does a bunch of things besides games. And there's only one other product out there that competes.

I normally wouldn't believe that 1.3 million is a low number for a game's first month of sales in North America, but didn't John Riccitiello say that Mass Effect 3 sold 890,000 copies on its release date? If only about 400,000 additional copies were sold during the remaining days in March (ME3 was released near the beginning of the month), then wouldn't that be a bit troubling for EA, or is this a relatively normal drop-off from first-day sales?

So my Top 10 SKU guess

1. ME3(360)
2. RE (360)
3. MLB(PS3)
4. ME (PS3)
5. NBA(360)
6. MP (Wii)
7. RE (PS3)
8. SSX(360)
9. KI (3DS)
10 MLB(360)

Because MS doesn't include handhelds in their PR, the PS3 version of Street Fighter might be on the list at 9 or 10 and MLB2K would be removed. The other game most unsure of is RE, if the breakdown is more evenly split then the 360 version is at 3 and the PS3 version at 4 or 5.

I think motion tech was in the end a trojan horse that got people's interest. But in the end it wasn't the motion technology that sold people on the Wii for years, but the typical Nintendo software like Mario Kart -- games people have kinda forgotten in the past, but that got very popular again once people actually bought Nintendo hardware again.

I seriously doubt it sold more than 10 copies

This is one thing that confuses me about western publishers this gen.

The sales of MLB 2K12 are likely anemic at best on the PS3, and clearly the majority of PS3 owners prefer MLB 12: The Show. I seriously doubt that the PS3 version will make them any money no matter how low the budget was (especially given it's an HD game). Last generation it was viable to release games on every last console to maximize profit, but with game budgets the way they are, it would seem pertinent to only release games on consoles that can give a reasonable chance of producing profit (so yeah, no uDraw on the PS3/360).

Probably part of the licensing deal to get 3rd party exclusivity.

I'm still trying to understand how Raccoon City sold those kind of numbers.

Was it heavily advertised? I haven't seen any ads, but I don't watch much television.

Or did it sell on brand name alone?

Third best DS game sold in February:

http://www.nintendo.com/games

I wouldn't mind another remake of the game. A DS remake kind of shafted a better possible remake now.

Wow, I was just shocked that DS games that old are still in print new.
UMvC3 Vita bombed hard in Japan too. At this point I don't think it's even worth the effort to release SFxT Vita...

There's a 0% chance that the game gets canceled. We already know that Capcom locked the "DLC" characters so the Vita version could claim them as exclusives. They're in way too deep now.

I suppose those total ME3 numbers still dont include PC?

Not PC digital, but yes PC retail.

I normally wouldn't believe that 1.3 million is a low number for a game's first month of sales in North America, but didn't John Riccitiello say that Mass Effect 3 sold 890,000 copies on its release date? For comparison:

MASS EFFECT 2* 360 ELECTRONIC ARTS Jan-10 572.1K (about five days)
MASS EFFECT 2 360 ELECTRONIC ARTS Jan-10 246.5K (four weeks)

That said, EA's CEO may have been including PC digital in the region, but we should get more specifics in about 2-3 weeks when almost every publisher makes their fiscal report.

Exactly.
