NeoGAF pCARS Time Trial Challenge - Week #5 - ??? @ ??? (Build 192)

I've PM'd BigTakeover so as soon as I get his response I'll post what it is! :) Or he can since I'm going to be out all day.

Yay, 2nd place :D . I think I saw some more gaffers put down a lap time but I guess they didn't post about it here.

I kinda hope it's not the BAC Mono, why so many people praise it on the WMD forums completely eludes me. I tried it out and didn't like it at all at the time. From what I remember it kept understeering when I wasn't expecting it to. I think I'll try to give it another fair shake when I have the time.

It would be cool if in future you could have a group in the game that we can all join so we could just keep following that, rather than supplying links to our individual times etc. :)

In theory we have 20-30 people in a NeoGAF group on the forum now, and in theory I'm an admin, but I have no clue about whether that group associates to an ingame group for leaderboard purposes, lol.

Last night I tried a bunch of combinations of cars & tracks knowing that I'd probably be picking today. I went in thinking I'd pick the BAC because, like you, I'd seen a lot of chatter about it. I had the exact same finding as you - huge understeer. It just wasn't very fun. Nice gearbox, good speed, good traction, terrible understeer.

What it needs is clan support, and then the ability to sort the leaderboards by clan times only.

Anybody who's played Forza 4 will know what I mean.

Strong time trial support is really important, IMO. Everybody loves multiplayer, but it can't be the sole way to build a community. Not in a game this size anyway. Too few people, too many time zones. You need as much asynchronous stuff to do as possible.

Awesome (that you are, too). On the chance I don't track down the thread, can you post it here when/if it's available?

Turns out they might not release one for this weeks build, here's a quote from one of the devs (Mike Laskey):

I'm not sure if we'll be providing those this week however I can say we'll be adding a per-device GUI control for next week's build; possibly also adding the multi's to the vehicle tuning screen (the latter part TBC).

Foli can introduce it properly, but I picked Bologna (Imola) with the Leonus F77 (Lotus 78).
Nice! A car that you really have to drive. Also, I'm glad to see that I'm not entirely crazy when it comes to the BAC Mono understeer.

F1's normal layout was Bologna, for other disciplines is Imola usually run as "Bologna Reverse"? I was wondering this because on a track list thread in the wmd forum I think Imola is described as being "Bologna Reverse"

I may have misunderstood what you said but both layouts are in the game, I was doing a few practice laps on the normal (non reverse) track.

The 77 is a pretty interesting car, not as much front end grip as I expected, but you can slide it in to some corners. I think I can still shave off at least a second or two. This track really tests your heel-toeing (was the real car H pattern or sequential?). I'll start trying some tuning setups tomorrow, especially downforce and grip related setups.

EDIT: Looks like it's a 5 speed manual so using the H shifter is correct ;) .
EDIT2: Bah, looking at pictures makes it seem like a sequential after all.

Well I just wanted to know in real life, if "Bologna Reverse" was more commonly used than Bologna(F1 layout).

I don't think there was a sequential in F1 until the early 90s. EDIT: didn't read the edit...

I ran just a bit of both, reverse actually felt easier.

Forward, Blizz.

Most karting tracks do, but beyond that I don't think there's a race track in the world that runs anything in reverse. All the infrastructure like barrier placement, marshal posts, and lights are unidirectional.

I noticed you're already well up on the leaderboard so I was wondering what hardware and shifting style are you playing with? I mean are you using the clutch for upshifts and what type of shifter, paddles, h or sequential?

I forgot to try whether you can smoothly upshift this car without the clutch, might also try the CSR sequential shifter for this.

Got a few laps in, had to wrestle the car a bit but pretty fun to drive.

Moving back to Uni today so no more wheel :( Slow times ahoy.

Good choice, Takeover :) Thanks for posting it for me - I was busy all day yesterday!

I'm using a DFGT set to G25 in-game, so I could map the clutch to a button on the wheel. Shifting with some GranTurGismo paddles.

I found that, like last round with the Formula A cars, the clutch is not needed on downshifts with the F77. It doesn't even really need any rev matching either. Just pull away at the gears. I'm flat shifting with no clutch on upshifts too.

I'd prefer if the game forced me into a more authentic style to be honest. Flat upshifting in particular is pretty janky, but it's certainly worth time. Not that I really care much about my time. I've done enough of these TTs in various sims to know where I stand - above average.

Back to this week's TT Challenge - I'm not much of a setup guy, but I found I absolutely had to lower the deceleration lock of the diff down to 15% or so. The default is too naughty with the rears locking up into places like acque minerali.

HOLY SHIT. Just visited randomly the WMD website and saw the latest screenshots.
This is the best looking racing game ever, period.

And that's with no mods, vanilla game? Holy Christ.

Just became a Team Member and downloading right now!

EDIT: I dare to say that GT 5 has finally been beaten. Mother of God.

Just bear in mind that sometimes people post resized screenshots, so the full-sized screens may have some aliasing in them. It -does- look quite nice if your computer can handle it, however, and presumably it's still improving.

As a reminder to anyone who doesn't browse the WMD forums often, check out the last 2-3 pages in the screenshot thread there (general forum, screenshots at the top). There is some NICE stuff.

Am I the only one who thinks that Andy responded kind of irritably on several posts the last few days? Wonder why? :(

It's Andy, he's always been a wise ass on their forums. I guess I don't get his sens of humor? He's been rude since day one with a lot of people.

Well I kind of liked his snippy posts in the past, but now it seems to get out of control (for example in the Licensing thread).

Ian is not much better sometimes too.

You should be careful with your words, otherwise your account will end like McLaren's ;)

Funny, I think with Ian it is quite the opposite, he seems a lot friendlier the last couple of days/weeks.

You joke, but there is some truth to that. Ian kicked me out of the project in mid-January but Andy actually banned me from the WMD forums in mid-March due to something I said here on NeoGAF. He's apparently a lurker so it's probably wise for people to be careful what they say.

It's a long story, but in a nutshell, I was too critical of pCARS' handling model and some of the bizarre choices that SMS is making (how are driving aids still not toggle-able while on track?!) and too positive about rFactor 2 during a time when the FFB in pCARS was incredibly buggy.

The studio head, Ian Bell, didn't like the cut of my jib so he kicked me out of the project.

I'm trying not to be rude or insult anyone, but I will just say that mclaren777 has been difficult to deal with here and as far as I recall, on the WMD forum. Others may remember the exact details regarding the Ian/Andy issues. He was refunded his money. If you want exact details, you may be able to do a post history search for him on neogaf and the WMD forum.

I wasn't joking, just wanted to give him a hint that he maybe should change his post.

Because I remember how what was going on :/

I tend to disagree. IIRC McLaren has never been rude in his words, just made his points what he thinks works better in other games. I may be wrong (didn't read all his posts on WMD).

NeoGAF pCARS Time Trial Challenge - Week #5 - Leonus F77 @ Bologna (Build 192)

Dilly - 1:39.290
BigTakeover - 1:40.614
Arucardo - 1:41.288

I've been doing some laps but I haven't really had a clean one yet, let alone a fast one. I will be submitting a time though! It's a great car. Pretty fun track, too.
