Long-requested sequels that are monumentally disappointing

Death Tank Zwei is one that was so disappointing that I forget it exists. The Saturn version is one of the best shared screen multiplayer games in existence, especially when played with six or seven players.

They made the graphics into a mess, they spoiled some of the controls at bit, and worst of all they released it on the only console incapable of doing more than four players on one machine.

Nights Into Dreams, and its sequel Nights: Journey of Dreams.

Journey of Dreams actually has some amazing levels, and there's really good content in there... but oh, the voice acting, and... THE OWL! SHUT UP AND DIE OWL! If ever there were a game that needed all its story and interface ripping out, it's this one. I sometimes think that this could get a director's cut and be re-released in a fixed form... :(

Thankfully there's a nice remake of the first NiGHTS game which goes some way towards easing the pain.

Which games have you wanted for six, ten, or even more years before being faced with something horrible?

Duke Nukem Forever: Need I say more?

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts: The humor and writing was spot on, but the gameplay was not. Maybe I just need to play it more, but I certainly don't "get" it at all. It didn't seem very fun, and it definitely didn't seem like Banjo.

Hey, I liked Death Tank XBLA. It was Worms XBLA that pissed me off. They ruined the ninja rope and the physics.

Lufia III sounds like a shoe-in, and if not that then the fourth game, but I had no stake in that series until the DS remake (though that too's probably a candidate). For me... yeah, NiGHTS is definitely up there, along with Other M. I had enough fun with Other M, but what a rotten direction to take that series.

Sin & Punishment 2

No wait, that was fucking awesome PEW PEW PEW PEW PEW

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn

not "monumentally" disappointing but... it certainly was of lesser quality than most of us expected and ultimately the weakest part

I remember people not liking Deus Ex: Human Revolution but I personally enjoyed it. Thi4f and Hitman: Bro Money could potentially land on these lists but I'm optimistic about the former and haven't seen enough of the latter.

The truth can be painful sometimes. :D
FLUDD and the Classic levels are some of the best things ever to grace Super Mario games. The only downsides are some of the fluff with collecting coins & some parts in regards to Yoshi. Otherwise Sunshine is a great game. I even prefer it to the cakewalk-Galaxy (1, 2 is the best 3d Mario)

I actually wonder if this may be a victim of growing older and changing standards, in that the game really wasn't that different from before, it's just more people saw that it was actually a kind of boring, excessively wordy RPG with a few neat gimmicks. Though they ratcheted up the wordiness, for fuck's sake don't bother being that verbose if you have neither story or characterization that benefits from having that much. At least it's not NiGHTS.

I think more were favorable of it than Invisible War, not that that's a hard feat. I liked it plenty, it just faltered a bit towards the end, ESPECIALLY with the ending itself.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

That Rocket Knight abortion brought the series back and quickly buried it again.

Anyone thinking of two years as 'long awaited' is missing the point, really :)
Mostly these are cases of games where the original team has long since moved on, or the climate has changed so much that the original game can't be made as-is. Changes in tech, or changes in culture, for example.

How would I play this?!? I'm guessing PC?
Japanese PS2, like I said in the original post. :)

Medal of Honor

I guess not many people were requesting WW2 shooters, though I still wanted a return to the espionage style of the earlier games. I didn't want slowCOD.

I obviously can't speak for others but I replay the GBA games almost every 2 years since their release and did so again before the release of Dark Dawn and I felt it was worse in almost every regard. From the pacing, over the presentation, to the menus everything felt like a step backwards. While there were definitely some great puzzles, nothing that happened in the game ever came close to some of the best parts in the second or even the first game for me. I could go more in detail and it's not bad game by any means but at the end of the day it just felt really underwhelming to a fan like me.
