EA bounce back with ‘FIFA Street’(-22%) returning to the top, marking the fourth week at No1, equalling the four week run of the original ‘FIFA Street’ released on PS2, Xbox and GameCube back in week 12 2005.

EA’s ‘Mass Effect 3’ (-34%) and ‘FIFA 12’ (-25%) also move back up a place at No2 and No3 respectively, which means that last week’s No1, Microsoft’s ‘Kinect Star Wars’ (-55%), has been forced down to No4 with over a 50% drop in sales.

It’s EA again at No5 with ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13’ (-23%) on par at No5 and Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’ (-23%) also stays firm at No6.

Bethesda’s ‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’ (-2%) continues to move up the chart from No10 to No7 and EA’s ‘Battlefield 3’ (-13%) is up a place at No8. Sega’s ‘Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games’ (-26%) is still in the race at No9 and EA’s sixth title in the top 10, ‘SSX’ (-40%), rounds us off.

It’s been a quiet week for new releases this week with Nintendo’s ‘Pandora’s Tower’ the only one to breach the Top 40 at No38.

I'm so happy that this wagon keeps rolling. Still the best racing game ever to hit a console.

Pandora's Fall :( The first "Operation Rainfall" game really ignored by mass audience. At least, Kid Icarus has gained two positions...

That's something at least, I was afraid I was the only person in western europe to have bought this (lovely) game. Very disappointed that it seems to have been sent to die.

I think most UK 3DS owners expect it to be sub-£15 soon so they're just waiting for that. Awful mentality of UK owners.

Handheld software is too expensive and what you are seeing is a natural reaction to that.

Yeah, I wouldn't argue that an RRP of £35 for a 3DS game is acceptable, but the fact is, if the game features the same amount of content as a home console title, why not charge similar??

Because no mattter how close they get, it isn't a home console title. I know that seems stupid but, ultimately, that's how it is. You're missing out on the big-screen, the 7.1, comfortable controls etc..

I reckon the common perception would be that handheld titles are competing with iOS / Android titles, not PS3/360. That perception will be tough to change.

To be fair, Pandora really isn't as good a game as Last Story and definitely not as good as Xenoblade. Still, I would imagine all three would have sold better if released a couple years earlier in the Wii life cycle. There really weren't many notable JRPGs released in the West during the first 5 years of the Wii's life, especially not by Nintendo.

Eeeh, what SmokyDave said. I think retail 3DS / Vita titles should be at least £10 lower, but, as a matter of fact, I feel many games, home and handhelds, should have lower prices than the top one, because they've had lower budgets than Mario, Zelda, COD, etc.etc.

This is the main problem of the industry now, IMHO: there are pretty but not big budgeted games priced like big budgeted and known ones when the former aren't the latter for many, many reasons... and when a customer sees on the same shelf both of them, what would it pick...the COD or the deBlob of the situation? There should be a dinamic price system where AAA known games are priced the most, while middle ground games are cheaper, middle-lower ground even more, and so on. In this way, a customer could think " Well, it seems fun, and the price is good, lower than COD, I can buy it!!!" .

And, actually, we are seeing this with the whole UK market, not just handhelds: big games make big numbers, while all the others suffer, a lot...and then, regain a bit of life when their price is slashed. It can't go on like this forever. Publishers, developers, platform holders...all should try to understand this and find a way to apply a more reasonable pricing system...it would translate in much better sales for some titles, I'm sure of this. You can't offer certain games ( despite their possible big quality ) at some prices in these times of difficult economic, where people isn't so ready to buy most at the same price.

I very much share your desire for cheaper releases. But it won't be easy to convince big publishers to release their not-quite-AAA titles at a lower price than the big blockbusters, one major reason being that rather than encouraging customers to go for the cheaper game on the shelf, it might put them off buying it if there is a perception that it is a 'cheaper' and thus lower quality game! Probably that wouldn't be the actual case, there are many amazing games with smaller budgets. But perception can mean a lot. You don't want to look like a budget release next to your competitor. I believe it's such a strong psychological factor that for publishers to become willing to release their games at a less premium price point, they would all have to reconsider the price of their bigger releases too.

Also there is probably a point about how hollywood and indie movies cost the same to see at the movie theatre, but I honestly can't be bothered to give it much thought!

Word of mouth can do great things, especially in these times where Facebook, Twitter and forums are relevant. This is the social era, where, if we want, we are always in contact with our friends and more...and more and more and more. But how can this mechanism start if not so many people buy these games because considered too expensive? And how it can spread in a good way if, despite the good opinions, most consider it still "too expensive, I have already to buy Assassin's Creed this month, we'll see". Cheaper price could make people think a game is lower quality, but many will buy it though not caring about this. And in this way, new IPs can find a field where to grow and expand.

And I'd like so much to see much more integration in games of Facebook, Twitter and so on: viral marketing through people making aware other people of their results on certain games, of what they think, sharing opinions, can be very effecive and, however, it's free. I know there are already games doing this, but there should be more and more implementations in more and more games... this is the way for the future.

Does this really stand up to scrutiny?

We've had pleanty of examples from the the DS era of £15 to £20 boxed games (Brain Training and 42 All Time Classics to name just two) that have been proven commercial hits as well as being quality titles.

It's been just over a year since the 3DS was launched in the West and if Nintendo is not careful, 3DS will cement it's position in the West as a console where only the absolute premium titles - like Mario Kart and Land and other AAA Ninendo titles - do well and everything else flounders.

Well we know about those because they were huge success stories. You don't hear about the times a £20 360 game came out and bombed. It's like how everyone thinks dolphins are lifesavers because once or twice they have guided lost humans back to sure, nobody knows about the dolphins who led the humans to their deaths :p

Pricing concerns like these are found in all retail sectors. I haven't gone out and done some analysis on the games industry but I'm a psychologist (of sorts) and am aware that producers pay a lot of attention to these sorts of perceptions.

The real problem is this game of poker the pubs are playing with us, the buying public, and they are the worst bluffers in the world. There is now no little doubt that a full-price release is going to be £15 or lower in a few weeks.

Good points. Perhaps a savvy publisher could take advantage of those mechanisms. And it also ties into the fact the games devalue stupidly fast - so many of us wait until a game hits a magic price point (£17.99?) before purchasing, but by then the hype has died down a little and while you might still have word-of-mouth, it won't combine with more traditional marketing. I guess it is in some sense a case of which publisher(s) will be brave enough to go first and release at a more sensible price point while also taking advantage of these new marketing opportunities

I mentioned the 3DS specifically because it's software situation is such an extreme case but, yeah, you're probably right about the 360 audience hahahaha )

Sniper: Ghost Warrior, Zumba Fitness, and Just Dance all immediately spring to mind as titles that made a living selling below the typical launch price.

Its for this reason my vita is gathering dust. I refuse to pay similar prices of a console game for a handheld one.

which only leaves minis really and some of the best minis have been ported to or are ports of ios titles, which are much cheaper to boot.

Tiger Woods moved even more to the 360, is the UK getting all the Tiger Woods Kinect commercials that we are getting here in the US?

Looks to be having an impact if so.

PS3, PSP and 360 went up in software units sold

PS3>Wii>PSP>PC>DS>360>PS2>3DS

PS3 is way ahead of everything else.

360 grew 7% in revenue while PS3 was down 8%?

Overall PS3 almost 3x 360.

PS3>Wii>PSP>PC>DS>360>PS2>3DS

In units. In revenue 360 would also move ahead of PSP and DS and PC into 3rd place...if I read this right. Also DS>PC in units...

Yes, units. PS3 sold 4.1M games in 2011

And PC total (info&educative&games) > DS. If Brain Training and cooking guides are games, so are the ones released on pc
