New Super Mario Bros 2 announced for 3DS - August 2012

They finally bring back a Tanooki tail with ACTUAL FLIGHT, complete with the old P buildup indicator. And yet the stage still appears to be only a single screen of height, as if it's still an old SMB1 style stage, but hopefully this isn't what it appears and the later stages have some vertical space at least.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Recycle much?

Yeah I wish they'd done something new with the art but come on. The return of the classic Racoon power up and the P-meter/flight? I think I can sum up my enthusiasm with one picture:

Whoa -- I just noticed the "August 2012" in the thread title. That's awesome!

Oooh damn. That's fast.

Still not sure what to do. I love Mario but I don't wanna support Nintendo reusing the same 8 worlds and the same enemies every game, with just new level design.

Well, voting with or without your wallet in this case is a moot point as the game will sell gazillions.

It's up to your money specifically.

I hope we see some new gameplay ideas or really inventive level design. Also some online co-op or versus modes would be awesome. Too bad about the art style though. It will probably be just as boring looking in 3d.

Uninspired art aside, I wonder if the following will happen:

- The WiiU game will be renamed from NSMB Mii to NSMB WiiU
- The name "NSMB WiiU" is a logical extension of NSMB Wii
- It also rhymes with NSMB2

- Since NSMB2 releases in August, we will see NSMB WiiU beforehand, at E3 in June
- Thus, it may be revealed some interconnectivity exists between the two titles
- 3DS owners who purchase NSMB2 would then have more incentive to get a WiiU

- Since NSMB2 has flight with the Raccoon Tail, and flight rapidly scrolls the screen, NSMB2 is single-player only in campaign, with multiplayer in a separate mode, like NSMB DS
- NSMB WiiU distinguishes itself from the 3DS title, in part, with the four-player co-op focus
- Also, perhaps the 3DS can communicate with the WiiU to serve as a tablet controller equivalent for multiplayer for 2P, 3P and 4P, so that extra tablet controllers aren't needed if the game has a Four Swords-style TV-to-second screen "warp pipe" dynamic

Just a possibility.

Wouldn't make much sense to release NSMB2 during the holidays, since NSMB WiiU will launch with the WiiU then, along with other heavy hitters like Pikmin 3. Sure, not confirmed yet, but likely.

So the August release for NSMB2 makes sense.

I love the fact people are calling lack of creativity, recycling, out of ideas etc etc when all we have to go on is a handful of screenshots.

I wonder if gold enemies are indestructible and that's going to be bowsers plan this time.

So, uh, isn't this the third one technically? Will the next console one be called new Super Mario Bros Wii 2? or New Super Mario Bros WiiU? Also, we are getting tons of new Mario platformers. It is like Miyamoto assigns development teams to make new Mario games as a training exercise.

I wonder if they'll add online for this.I mean after playing NSMBwii which was insanely fun to play with people it would be a no brainer to add it to this

This just makes me want to play SMB3 instead.

Considering there's nothing to localize I would be shocked if this wasn't simultaneous.

There's still manuals and what little in-game text they'll have to do.

I wonder if the gold color is a special theme in this game. After all, the number "2" is also yellow/gold.

And, man, recycled art... :(

Come on Nintendo. Make something audacious like Yoshi's Island again...

I sure wish they'd use a different art style. It's looking more like Mario 3 than ever though, which is a good thing I guess, if it weren't for the (almost assured) fact we've played this game few too many times before.
