one of the video I saw had Kratos raping with final score of 12 and the loser (forgot who) got a score of -5. that was a fun video, Kratos is a beast in that one
Ew, no. I don't think the game looks too bad, but they need to get rid of that Vaseline filter and make it look sharper and clearer.
I understand what you're saying, and I understand how it could work in practice, but here's my major concern even after this:
In Smash Bros, my friends and I all hate the idea of one hit KO stuff, so we always turn off Smash Balls, that 4 part weapon thing, and any other OHKO items.
This game is based entirely on OHKOs.
Now, as you said, the system can work in a way, but where it all breaks down to me is that I could have barely gotten hit for an entire match, while someone else filled up their bar by beating on another guy and uses that Super to KO me, even though I've barely been touched, while the guy who got beat to hell and back may come out of it all unscathed. I can see this getting extremely frustrating to me.

It was Radec that had -5. Guess he got killed by hazards?
I don't see why this should be a huge concern. This isn't a game about not getting hit. The environments and speed at which characters move make it such that you are constantly going to be attacking someone. It's a VERY active game.
The person with the most skill that consistently strings the most combos will be rewarded with more supers. The person that can do this will successfully executing on their supers will be the victor.
Sitting back and being a passive player isn't skill, and it doesn't look like it's even encouraged in this game at all.
The only time I can see where taking a passive strategy may work is if it's 2 v 2.
link?
This sounds like such an interesting new dynamic (new for me at least, surely someone will come in and mention that obscure fighter that already did this a dozen years ago )But if you play a ffa match you are going to be aware of whats up with everyone. As I said previously if you let someone earn a kill token by beating another person then you should know that he can apply it on you. If you (player 1) are engaging player 2 and taking zero damage but you see player 3 kicking player 4 left and right you should be aware that there is a possibility of you being dead for allowing the situation or change your objetive to go against the other who is really head to head with you on your meter to super race.
probably by Kratos lol. Hazards can kill? I'm not sure if it will kill or just make you stun and lose AP.

To the OP, can you please add that one of the people working on the game is Maj, a name many an FGer would know from his spectacular combo videos and FG articles-

I can understand not recognizing Radec and Fat Princess (despite both being awesome games) and yeah I guess even Sweet Tooth (although Twisted Metal is the longest running Sony franchise), but how do you not recognize Sly Cooper unless you were asleep all throughout the PS2 days? There aren't many Sony mascots that I recognize on that short list on Page 1 except for Kratos. Parappa but never played his game. Good for Sony though. Hopefully they can craft a game that forces Nintendo to really be on their game for the next Smash Bros.
Competition is good.
the game is specifically designed to encourage you to be active. you can't expect to hang out in the back or run away, let the other 3 people duke it out and look for opportunity of cheap kill or hitting someone who have low health bar.
even Sly who is not a direct offensive character have to go in there and steal ap to get his kill. Sly have no block but from what I read he have some kind of teleport move (moving really fast to other place). I imagine that'd be useful for evading attack and confusing enemies and when enemies are busy with other people, start stealing ap and build your super.
From the four stages we've seen, the environment hazards have different effects.
Getting hit by Hades makes your drop AP and stuns you for a moment
Getting bit by the Hydra makes you drop AP
Getting hit by the golf balls on the Sandover Village stages makes you drop AP
Getting eaten by the fish in Sandover Village KOs you
Answering Buzz's trivia question wrong gives you a pie in the face and a KO.
And yes the battle mode they were showing off is a net score game. Earn a KO +1, get KO'd -1
probably by Kratos lol. Hazards can kill? I'm not sure if it will kill or just make you stun and lose AP.
What are the chances of characters from SOTC/ICO or Demon's Souls?
there seems to be other way to get score, I just found the video where Kratos is destroying the other guy.

Kratos only got 6 KO and 1 resets but his score is 11. basically from watching the match, Kratos level 1 super have pretty good range and his attack hit all the other 3 player at once when they're busy fighting each other in close combat.
Fat Princess and Parappa score also not a simple number of KO - number of reset.
FatPrincess got 3 KOs and 4 resets = 2 score
Parappa got 4 Kos and 3 resets = 5 score
maybe you get score if you kill with highe super or manage to kill multiple people with 1 attack etc.
But thats where All-Stars makes a drastic change in approach from most fighters. In nearly all other fighters, as long as you are taking care of your own shit then you are good. But in All-Stars it adds another layer because not only do you have to take care of your own shit but you have to make sure someone else isn't smacking another dude left and right. Simultaneously doing your job while preventing others from doing there's.I'm not talking about sitting back and not attacking. I'm saying that I could be in the thick of things, getting my Super up and getting kills of my own, while avoiding getting hit for the most part. But if someone else got their Super by hitting other players, the fact that I've been good about avoiding damage doesn't mean shit because he can take me out just as easily as he could the players who are getting hit all the time.
I can see one-on-one matches playing out pretty fairly and just like other fighting games, like how KevinCow described, but I think this is a legitimate concern for 3 or 4 player matches that could definitely reduce my enjoyment of the game.

I'm sure there will be a lot more recognizable characters and some more rather unknown ones as well. These types of games, besides being a fan service, are kind of aimed to use popular characters to lure you in and then get you curious about the ones you don't know. I know I definitely got interested in a lot of Nintendo's franchises I wouldn't have otherwise because of Smash Bros.

Also keep in mind that if you get KO'd when you reset your meter is empty. So if you notice someone is demolishing one of the weaker players and about to get their meter to level 3, instead of trying to stop him from attacking that player you can use your super early at level 1 or 2 and aim to KO him specifically.

Definitely something I can see a distaste for but I for one welcome the extra dynamic (read: keeping an open mind. Sounds cool but I need to try it first hand). If anything it will definitely make the gameplay faster than SSB, which is good or bad again depending on your tastes.
If you're truly kicking ass and not getting hit very much, your super will be really high, which means you have plenty of opportunity to unleash your own KOs with supers.
It doesn't really matter how many times you die (unless you play survival mode where a passive strategy works better) either. What matters is how many KOs you get compared to everyone else.
If someone else is kicking ass on lesser players, then why aren't you trying to kick his ass or kick the ass of the players he's kicking ass?
Also, if you're avoiding damage, that means that other players aren't filling up their super.
This is a non-issue, imho.
Ah, must of misread one of the previews. Still, it should. Lots of time left to make tweaks.your super meter doesn't reset when you got killed.
One thing we can get excited about already is the control, because it's outstanding. SuperBot really nailed it. It's fast, super-responsive, and never gets in the way of the crazy action. The in-air stuff is not floaty at all; jumps do what you need them to, when you need them to. I never had a problem blocking, platforming or recovering. From the dozen or so matches I played I can tell you that if you die, it's 100 percent on you -- the control is that tight.
After several matches I came away pretty excited about All-Stars. Smash rip-off? Who cares! It's so fun that I'm not even drawing the connection anymore. It's so easy to get in and get wrapped up that I found that a string of fights takes place before you know it. Even with only six characters and four stages I'm sure I could have played all night if permitted. The characters are are an obvious draw, and with their fantastic control you want to keep playing them. The mashed-up stages are also a riot, and are all eye candy to boot. If they get the balance down pat and add the right characters, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale will be a smashing success. I'm sure they can pull it off, as the foundation has already been laid for a great fighting game.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm picking on you, not trying to at all. But seems like there is no win . . .I guess it does introduce a new type of strategy. It's just very different and I'm not sure if I'll enjoy it or not yet. I'm willing to give it a shot, but I'm not letting myself get too hyped.
no it shouldn't, if your meter is reset to 0 everytime you got killed, you have to work your way filling it all up again. you'll have hard time ever reaching lv 2 or 3 super. the way it's setup now, even if you're not that good and die a couple times, you can still hit level 3 and use it. you'll still fall behind of the score if you died too much, but at least the loser can still have fun playing. nothing is worse than playing a full match without being able to use your super not even once because everytime you're trying to build up your AP someone killed you and you lost all that AP

At first people think its a carbon copy of SSB, "what a joke lol Sony fails"
Then people like yourself admit to it being so different that you're not sure you'd like it.
So which would we rather have?
Though to be fair I agree with your sentiments. After all it is a new franchise so there's no telling what we'll get, they must prove it is good before we can assume it is.
Well part of me thinks the level 3 super should be something that feels really super and special, something that may not happen every match and require you to be at least a little good to execute instead of everyone for the most part being entitled to at least one level 3 super per match regardless of skill. Though you do make a lot of good points. And in the end this is also aimed to be a party game. Congratulations, you have changed my mind.no it shouldn't, if your meter is reset to 0 everytime you got killed, you have to work your way filling it all up again. you'll have hard time ever reaching lv 2 or 3 super. the way it's setup now, even if you're not that good and die a couple times, you can still hit level 3 and use it. you'll still fall behind of the score if you died too much, but at least the loser can still have fun playing. nothing is worse than playing a full match without being able to use your super not even once because everytime you're trying to build up your AP someone killed you and you lost all that AP
I love this paragraph from the Destructoid article. Specifically the controls section. The way jumping feels can absolutely make a game great or drive me crazy. I'm really excited it appears they got that all ironed out.
