Media Create Sales: Week 17, 2012 (Apr 23 - Apr 29)

I wonder if Capcom could pull something off with RE like Nintendo does with Mario.

Make both kinds of games. The survivor horror and the more popular action variety. Similar to how nintendo makes both 3D and 2D mario games.

It's certainly possible. It really depends on how Revelations ends up doing in the long run, as well as what Capcom's expectations were for it.

If the Vita had a UMD drive, Ill bet all those new releases would have pushed more Vita hardware than it sold this week.

Yeah yeah yea... I know.... but still.

i been saying the same thing. to the letter. but everybody here has to get a universal translator for my posts.

Didn't they say in a recent interview they would've followed this strategy? Both the action ones and the horror ones.

About a possible next RE on 3DS.
I was thinking about RE2 remake, but right now it seems that even Japanese people prefer more the action driven games of the series, buying even ORC a lot at launch. Maybe, the best fit for the platform is really a Resident Evil: Revelations 2, released in end 2013 / beginning 2014, taking advantage of the even larger installed base and RE fanbase established on the platform. It would certainly do better than Revelations...if 3DS doesn't suffer the Wii's fate XD

I agree, some kind of sequel to Revelations, possibly with a more robust Raid mode, would likely sell noticeably better in a year or two than Revelations did this year, especially if Capcom actually marketed it this time around.

Great week for just about everybody. Congrats to FE. :)
My god, why is ORC selling so well.
I'm going to go with advertising.
I guess RE fans all over the world including Japan just really, really want the games on consoles. Capcom should definitely reconsider any future substantial support on portables if this is the case.
Or this.
PSP(2011 YTD)= 829,199
PSP+PSV(2012)=580,370(-30.0%)

Looking ahead to Week 18, PSP did 55,140 in 2011.

3DS+DS(2011 YTD)=1,342,079
3DS+DS(2012 YTD)=1,569,748(+17.0%)

Looking ahead to week 18, 3DS+DS did 48,665 in 2011.

All handhelds(2011 YTD)=2,171,278
All handhelds(2012 YTD)=2,150,118
Almost. I feel like I say that every week now. But I wonder just how big of a bump the 3DS will get because of Golden Week. It is already seeing a bump in software, so that should bode well overall.

Ciel no Surge had 31,102 total users as of Tuesday afternoon (date stamped @ upper right). So much for attempting to extrapolate DL numbers, as the numbers are significantly smaller than physical copies sold. Must be a lot of users w/ unopened copies?
I think it is more likely that many havnt went online with their Vita.

People celebrating over a 4 thousand unit increase for the Vita? Really?
Saying some positive words about the increased sale isnt necessarily the same as celebrating though.

Is it at all possible that some of FE 60k this week is from the bundled numbers that were never officially counted last week? If not I'm even more impressed by FE's numbers, really hope in a few months we here some numbers for DLC to see how well it's selling in Japan.

The Lascar, good timing. I had a question for you: at NintendojoFR I saw you summarized lot of data regarding Nintendo. I wonder if you got data on the number of teams at Nintendo and the number of people for each team.

The reason is that Nintendo grew almost by 2000 people since 2005 and I would be interested to know where they are employed within the company.

Thanks in advance.

Depuis combien de temps a tu ouvert le site gamecharts.fr?

For that kind of information, you have to use the Kyoto Report, and ask to Shikamaru Ninja. But it's a very difficult request and I don't think there's any way to knowing this.

Depuis janvier 2010.

There will be sharp drops at hardware after Golden Week. The systems that won't get a small bump or at least maintain this week's sales will be at worse position.

Kinda disappointing sales overall for GW this year. There wasn't the big seller.

Metallix87

Member
No, but next week will be worse.

Absolutely, but you said Golden Week sales were disappointing, which is silly since Golden Week is this week and we won't know how sales were until next week. Next week's sales will definitely be worse, of course, since it's the week after GW.

Chris1964

Sales-Age Genius
The big week is always the week before GW as all new games come out then. Nothing releases during GW. ORC will drop like a rock and only Mario Party and 3-4 3DS games will sell some copies.

Maybe Square should have tried releasing DQM one month earlier.

Metallix87

That's true. I definitely think we'll see a Top 10 dominated by 3DS games, and possibly a resurgence of older games getting sales bumps.

Given what happened in the last three years, next week Nintendo consoles should increase a bit, while Sony ones should decrease.

Vita has a marginal increase, so there may be hope for 20k at Golden Week!.

Fire Emblem is showing a great second week, too.

Is it safe to say Monster Hunter people decided they wanted a second game and several are dipping into Fire Emblem?

taking advantage of the even larger installed base and RE fanbase established on the platform

I think a sequel should launch better, as you say its got fans of Revelations 1; RE fanbase generally; bigger install base. Plus tbh I think customers sometimes buy sequels cause well...good games get sequels!

Certainly Revelations seemed to get things right. They just need to tidy it up a bit for any sequel (also maybe wait a while I think). Full on proper Zombies would help too, brand wise Revelations is quite removed from the recent editions of the series which have all concentrated hard on zombie-esque enemies. Just see RE6 trailer for that.

I agree, some kind of sequel to Revelations, possibly with a more robust Raid mode, would likely sell noticeably better in a year or two than Revelations did this year, especially if Capcom actually marketed it this time around.

Agreed. A few more game types would help to. E.g. Survival.

Rather than that I feel as Nintendo targeted a wider audience with this Fire Emblem game.

-Dating sim elements
-Pink Fire Emblem Point Cards

Both are things that would attract more of a female audience.

The Art being much less "serious" looking than before probably helped too.

Edit: I don't mean the art is bad, because it's absolutely gorgeous and I think the game has one of the best boxart ever made, but past games had a very "hard fantasy" feel, when this one looks much lighter.

Yeah, don't think MH has anything to do with FE's success. This game is much more forgiving than the par for the series, which probably attracted a much wider audience. Also haven't they been marketing the game pretty heavily? And the game looks gorgeous, IMO, so that probably helped.

Dash Kappei

Not actually that important
I thought the doom and gloom about the Vita was overblown and that it'd start showing signs of strength; nice to see my prediction come to fruition.

Yes, 12k is such an achievement and positive sign alright, I don't understand where all this "doom and gloom" comes from

So, was revelations a bomb? It's not doing too hot in NPD's either.

Absolutely not a bomb, one of the strongest perfoming RE spin-offs. More than a quarter of a million, will at least crawl to 300k when all is said and done.
Didn't set the charts on fire, bur definitely not a bomba.

Interesting, Orc and CN perfomed way over expectations.

Holy shit, no one was even close on ORC. The closest estimate still underestimated it by over 10%, and that guess was a rather extreme outlier. Only two people even guessed correctly that the PS3 version would outperform Mario Party (For this week, of course it'll win in the long run), crazy stuff. This game came out of absolutely nowhere or what? Shouldn't we of been able to extrapolate high sales from Comgnet?

Does it still have permadeath?

It crossed my mind that if Nintendo ever thinks of "Pay 100Y to res this character", we're all doomed.

The wish for it to fail was stronger than reason for most I guess.

Returning back to the suggestion of monthly predictions. Do you people think it's better?

This month we'll have some reasonably expected releases, but the most interesting ones aren't in the same week, so if we did it monthly we could predict for them all at once; if we go weekly, it seems only the week of 24/5 has more than one notable release.

05/17 [PSP] Persona 2: Eternal Punishment

05/24 [3DS] Mario Tennis Open
05/24 [PS3] Dragon's Dogma
05/24 [360] Dragon's Dogma

05/31 [3DS] Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry no Wonderland 3D <---

More games coming out this month: http://translate.google.com/transla...ranking/hatsubai/ranking.cgi?1335769657_21193

Then we have the issue of deciding which LTD to use: The last known Media Create LTD or the Famitsu monthly top 10.

And there's a final question: Which calendar to use. It's relevant because, for instance, [3DS] DQM3D is released in May, but it'll only be part of June by either Media Create or Famitsu. (If we want to go with the regular calendar instead of the trackers', our only option would be the last known LTD.)

The last known MC LTD seems like the best option, considering MC is what the predictions are based off of. I guess ignore the Monthly MC Nintendo Top 20, too, so just weekly Top 20 LTD numbers.

MC is a week off of Famitsu, so the MC month would probably include the first week of DQM3D. Therefore, MC month.
