The Wii U Speculation Thread V: The Final Frontier

I'm kinda wondering how long this upcoming generation is going to last. I mean, we're going to see an even smaller jump this time around in visuals.. how much of a leap are gamers going to expect, and will they really get to a point where they say things like, "The 720's graphics suck ass! We need the 1440, and we need it, like, yesterday, dude!"

Many are trained like robots to want more and expect more out of greed and a so-called expectation of advancement.

I can't believe some actually really want this, they just become cyclicly silly.

You never hear any gamers say "I can't wait for the next so and so system, it's level design is going to be so much better."

They're pretty much have the same level of popularity IMO. A competitive racer like F-Zero would be a perfect "core" title to show a strong commitment to online.

Would the two rumoured racing games (Project CARS and Concept Grand Prix) not perhaps fill this particular niche, or are they too different?

An article about EA alarming situation, speculating about the fact that it could be a takeover target

Just imagine Nintendo acquiring some of their franchises, the glorious Bullfrog/Westwood/Origin/Etc era, hiring some of their employees, and opening a western studio dedicated to refreshed/up to date "old school" PC IP's adapted to Wii U...

Back to the news, i hope there won't be a drastic restructuring with a lot of job cut-off :(
Edit: and that some Wii U titles in development get canceled, like Sega with its recent bad financial news.

Mario's Edge?

Isn't that what we're trying to do here? Speculating on how a new system can be improved upon based on its non-graphical enhancements? (edit: and getting hyped about it!)

I just want to watch it on my HDTV. :lol

If it is, I'll be watching it by myself most likely. I would invite my girlfriend, but she will most likely be in class. Besides, I get pretty intense during the conference and I doubt she will want see that. :lol
Yeah, I hope I can get a nice stream or it's on an HD channel.

My comments were purely on graphical expectations.

Non-graphical enhancements - and the associated new gameplay options that they enable - are going to be where it's at. :)

Hoo boy, sorry but if there was ever an evident demonstration of the term "rose tinted glasses" it would be this post.

That depends. I personally enjoyed the N64 and GC more than I did the Wii. I found this due to the fact that N64 and GC had more quality multiplayer titles that my family, friends, and I enjoyed together. The Wii didn't really have that same charm, however, the Wii did have some great titles.

Edit: With the Wii U, I would love to see a lot of multiplayer titles.

MK Wii and NSMB Wii were great multiplayer titles, but yeah N64 is still king in 4p awesome sauce.

I've have to vote for the Wii as my favorite, but it cheats in the form of the included Virtual Console.

On games made for the system itself, it's a close tie between GameCube and Wii for me.

Those Mario Galaxy games keep coming to mind, but the GameCube's body of work - Eternal Darkness, Wind Waker, Chibi Robo, Tales of Symphonia.. is was too good to me.

Well, longtime Nintendo fans should know better.

Even when the company's systems were fairly powerful, it was the ideas and mechanics that shined brightest.

Yeah, some people here are talking up what new ideas the system will bring but I'd say about 70% at least is raw numbers and boring innard term(to me, fine if others dig that stuff) talk.

I really don't care if the specs are ever revealed, the games will do the talking for them either in a bad or good way.

I'd be curious and frightened to see what people would prefer if they had the choice: The system as powerful as it is expected to be with the controller or a system on par with the next generation Sony and Microsoft systems' capabilities but with a regular 'ol controller.

I'd take the former in a heartbeat.

I feel that they're a bit too serious and realistic. F-Zero's exciting, accessible yet deep gameplay is in a league of its own.

Still, it's nice to see Nintendo trying to cover bases in more realistic genres with the two games you mentioned.

Aye, if we actually do run out of low hanging graphical fruit, then we'll have a situation like the second generation where systems are wildly different in massively experimental ways in order to differentiate themselves. The whole concept of the "one console future" is boring and can go eat a brick.

GC was pretty mediocre but N64 had a damn good lineup that is miles ahead of the Wii.

Good grief, and now you go and blow my mind in reverse. Mmmmmm, how I pine for the days of system draughts! Bring us back to the days when NCL could barely be bothered to release one major game annually! I love waiting six to eight years between mainline Mario and Metroid releases!

This upcoming generation, will last about six years Just like this last one has.1080p res its going to be the normal resolution for IMO the next fifteen to twenty years. 1080p is just becoming the normal resolution for tvsi do not see an change up to 1440p any time soon. So this upcoming Gen will be1080p/720p for games with most likely1080p mostly. After that, in six years or so, the next Gen will mostly be processing power boost-all games1080p after that depending on the market is like in thirteen out so years, that Gen skill most likely do1440p/1080p games depending on theprevulance of1440p tvs on the market

Oh, of course they'd have to be selective in whom they choose for those kinds of events requiring travel. Maybe they can mix things up a bit, where instead of bringing two folks from Major Site, they bring one person over from Major Site and another person over from Fan-Run Site. There are ways where some sort of middle-ground of compromise could be established, I think.

I'm thinking though that they could still do more interviews and reveals elsewhere - but instead of physical travel, they could take advantage of the internet and do Skype interviews or telephone interviews - those are pretty cost-effective ways to communicate.

Heck, another example: Nintendo could even do invite-only Let's Play videos to show-off a game. Or they could mail a console with a disc and remotely control it such that the game is unplayable after XX/YY/ZZ date, and the disc must be returned immediately after use.

The idea that some of these large media outlets are being given more access can be a bit repulsive at times, honestly. Just my own personal take. There's gotta be a better way.

There is a better way. It's called "cutting them out of the equation entirely".

Microsoft and Nintendo both have been making moves that put them at the tip of that, with self-delivered news, peer-based reviews, the options for targeted marketing of games based on play records... aside from opinion pieces that little to no one gives a shit about, what does gaming journalism have left to offer?

I'd love to call Wii my favorite but it was far from it. I only enjoyed a handful of games on the console. The following are what I enjoyed from what I've played and completed

Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess
No More Heroes
Tatsunoko vs Capcom
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Metroid Prime 3
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Super Paper Mario

I own about 50 Wii titles. I own less GC games but enjoyed a lot more on the GC than I did on the Wii. I haven't played Xenoblade, so I can't judge it just yet.

I disagree. MK Wii framerate killed the game for me. I could tolerate it on the N64 when I was a lot younger but now it makes the game nearly unplayable for me. I get irritated. I tried and I really tried playing NSMB Wii with my brothers, but it didn't work out in the end.

The only multiplayer titles I enjoyed on the Wii were SSBB and Tatsunoko vs Capcom.

Other than getting the word out about upcoming games and contributing to the formation/reinforcement of opinions that gamers have about any of a number of industry issues, I'm not sure. But those are pretty substantial contributions.

Nintendo has to figure a way around these clowns. Even if it takes baby steps over a few generations. I'm convinced that there is no winning with this crowd.

You're right, and I stand by it where most third party titles are concerned.

I've lost count on the no. of occasions where GC software has outdone equivalent offerings on the Wii. It's not the hardware - the shift in development priority and effort in hardware utilisation is what took a nose-dive pretty much everywhere except EAD and Texas.

Just tell me you like SMG much more than Mario Sunshine and we can be best buds.

You're entitled to your opinion, but just look at its exclusive lineup and compare it with the Wii equivalents;

GOATarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Mario 64
Paper Mario
Mario Kart
Diddy Kong Racing
Beetle Adventure Racing
F-Zero X
Star Fox 64
Extreme G
1080 Snowboarding
Wave Race 64
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo-Tooie
Rocket: Robot on Wheels
Space Station Silicon Valley
Conker
DK64
Ogre Battle 64
Harvest Moon 64
Goemon's Great Adventure
Blast Corps
Mario Golf
Mario Tennis
Super Smash Bros.

That's about 5 worthwhile games a year and I made sure to only include the ones that were well reviewed pretty much everywhere. Most of the are new IPs too.

Kirby 64

Added a few other games.

It is a really ambiguous comment. Seems like he could have phrased it differently to clarify his meaning.

Yeah, someone in that other silly thread about it said what I said and people said he was reaching or grasping for straws but then I checked out the quote and it could mean either.

The Turoks were on PC too IIRC. But yeah, N64 was a beast.

I just remember being into them on the N64 and never realized there were PC versions until a few years ago.

Those Aki wrestling games are some of the best games around.

I wish we still had quality Wrestling titles like the Aki ones. The closest we got was Day of Reckoning and THQ killed that off for SvR :(

My list > your list.

I'd argue your list = my list = <3

If the Wii U does have a Gamecube Virtual Console, I'd get Def Jam in a heartbeat.

Too bad if they have something like that, it will never be put on there for various reasons.

(contemplates ordering it online)

Lets just agree to agree.

Also it's crazy how much I enjoyed the N64 and Gamecube, like a TON. But then I totally didn't care a whole lot for the Wii. These lists are just reminding me how I've changed. Next gen will be a return to form for me (assuming nintendo doesn't fuck up), but it's weird none the less.
