Ehh if anything I thought 8's stages were rather redundant and boring save for that "portal path" thing. It's like they're milking it all the way through. It's the only Mario game I recall that milks a certain end boss gimmick throughout the world.
I don't see what's inherently wrong with using forced scrolling for most of the world. They formed some awesome, challenging stages out of it, and the last thing on my mind while playing them was wanting a stage-specific gimmick.

Nah, the screen-to-screen stage design is more important. Movement is huge and shapes that design, of course, but World's movement isn't better enough to elevate its stages above 3's.
