The Wii U Speculation Thread VI: The Undiscovered Country

Not open for further replies.
WTF. Is your dad always drunk? What the hell was going on in the video?
Basicly, by that time my dad was tired of filming (we previously filmed two other YouTube News videos, Mario Tennis Open and the final episode of Stupid Mario Bros that day) so my mom was gonna voice over him in the background, and as you see she does this at the begining and we all just found it so funny and kept laughing.

Basicly the entire episode turned into what would've been a ordinary blooper. I was thinking of refilming it, but considering how crazy some of the Wii U speculators are, I thought it fit well.

You just had to be there I guess.

Now I wanna do one for thread VII if that happens (which it probably will lol)

I am gonna make a series of E3 News which will be just like this video except it'll be news about E3. In most of our youtube news episodes we actually talk about stuff, so check them out if you think you may like them! (lol)

We haven't heard any ports that will yet. I don't consider Aliens: CM a port. Batman: AA is an example of what I consider a port.

I think he was referring to any game that was on all 3 platforms, that is generally what most people consider a port, and just to be clear, do you think AC3 is a port and DS2 a port? since they have a smaller team "porting" the game onto the platform, this is how I see Aliens, so I'm not sure where your line is drawn.

AC3 has had several rumors now of increased graphics over the "HD Twins" but yes nothing concrete yet, which is to be expected with Nintendo and the way they treat E3.

I think they should announce release date, imo.
Well we already know that it'll be released before the end of the year everywhere and holiday season seems like a logical choice. I don't think the exact date is that important half a year in advance.

IdeaMan

My source is my ass!
Wait, I thought IdeaMan was gonna post some new shit stuff for the 6th OT???

I explicitly explained the situation like 100 time. And it's really cool to catch-up and spot hostile messages like "shit", "wuss", "he must die", etc.

First thread transformed because i was partially scooped, the rest of the content was posted here http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=38079414&postcount=19326 and in Acebandage padlet thread a few hours ago

Second thread in discussion with mods to see if i can make it as i can't totally confirm it (there are rules, you can't create a thread with the info you want without some sort of backing). If i can't do it, i'll post the message in the 6th thread, this one, a few days from now, because i just wrote something (point 1).

Ok ? Now if we can AVOID to derail this thread like 50 pages of the thread 5, thanks :)

If a game is developed at the same time as the others I don't consider it a port.

well if thats the case many people will really think that WiiU is like Ps3/xbox360 and sony/microsoft will also use negative marketing to make it more convincing..

That is a very strong possibility.

The Nintendo Wii U Speculation Thread Pre-E3 Survey

1) So.. how much will the Wii U cost?
£250-350(depending on what is in the bundle)

2) And when will the Wii U's Launch Day be?
Before Christmas

3) Your #1 Desired Launch Day Game?
(a) Officially announced software: Batman: AC. My 360 died before I could play this so I can't wait(especially given some of the comments regarding "cool" uses of the subscreen).
(b) What I really want to see: Something that is EXCITE!!!!!!(as we will never get a nSMW :( )

4) Any pleasant third-party surprises for the Wii U?
No.

5) Any predictions of media criticisms for Nintendo's behaviour/substance during E3 Week?
Wii U is the new Dreamcast/Gamecube.

6) What'll be your preferred food & drink of choice during the Nintendo Conference?
Tea & herbal cigarettes.

7) How long will the Nintendo Conference go on, and what'll be the breakdown on time spent between Wii U amd 3DS?
1hr20,with 25mins on the 3DS, 35 on the Wii U & 25mins of Reggie waffling on about Netflix.

8)  Predict:  rate the Wii U Launch lineup from 1 (worst) to 10 (best).
Judging it in a vacuum it is likely to be one of the best launch line-ups ever, but it is likely to lack top quality exclusives so 7/10.

9) Predict: any final hardware revelations?
It won't look like a SNES.

10) Predict:  any super-special applications that Nintendo's gonna spring on us?
Digital manuals for every game, screenshot "app" working at an OS level(using the subscreen as a view-finder), eShop automatically pushing videos to the subscreen for games/content you have previously looked at( as well as streaming future Nintendo Direct to every user).

11) Predict:  With BP now gone, who's the Nintendo fan most likely to be banned from NeoGAF during E3 Week?

everyone-the-professional.gif

12)  Wild-card prediction:  anything else?
If GTA V isn't announced as coming to Wii U this will be Reggies last E3.

SIDENOTE: The poor TT-guy that gave us the pic from the tablet seems to be without a job now and maybe has to defend himself infront of court cos of the NDA thing.

I wonder if his defense will be that Nintendo already revealed the controller in their patents.

yeah ubermatik, herzogzwei, some others

And hello thread :)

Hi Ideaman, just wanted to say I appreciated the tid-bits of info you posted toward the end of the last thread, especially the fact that even developers don't know what the mystery square button does. This seems to indicate that there's some sort of super-secret console feature that Nintendo want to keep wraps on, and the large amount of reserved RAM may have something to do with it (I personally don't believe it's a "switch screens" button because there's no reason to keep that secret from developers).

Anyway, I hope you don't mind if I make a suggestion regarding your upcoming info. I understand that the powers that be aren't to keen on it becoming a thread because they don't want to set a precedent for allowing threads to be made based on posters' own sources. Even though in this case your source might be totally reliable, I can understand why they'd be worried about posters in future making threads based on unreliable hearsay. My proposal would be that you post the info here in this thread, and then get EatChildren to change the thread title to something like:

Wii U Speculation Thread VI: Six Seasons and a Built-In Hard Drive (post 757)

That way people can see the news on the homepage, and get directed to your post where you tell everyone how I was right about the hard drive ;) Furthermore, the mods don't have to worry about any thread creating precedents.

Did really Retro mention that they were working in a favorite fans game?
If that's true then there are chances it being that Starfox x Metroid thing =/

I assumed very early on that the mysterious square button is for switching between TV/controller screen - but this wouldn't work with games which need both screens.. so it must be something else.

The context of it left it wide open because it didn't say a "fan favorite". From how it was said, a game with lots of eye candy on Wii U would fit as well.

Title change with a countdown. We need 19,500 posts in two days guys. :p

It could be a neat shortcut button for the games that can be played without a second screen. The button doesn't need to be used by every single game.

But for games that can be played on one screen and transferred from the TV to the DRC, there would still need to be a button of some sort, no?

It's not used by games, though, as if it were developers would know what it does. The fact that they don't indicates it controls some sort of system functionality.

That could be done with a 'button' on the touch screen or a start menu option or something.

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.

Hmmm, but why put a button so close to he power where you coud accidentedly press the wrong one and shut it down. Perhaps it not for a button at all but a jack for some attachment?

I think, that if you could attach something to the pad, it would be something like the U-zapper, it attaches from below.

Hmm, you're probably right.
Still, it makes a lot of sense for there to be a quick shortcut button to switch the primary screen between TV and uPad.

Do you think Nintendo changed the tablet design and added analog sticks because of the fans reaction? They seem to pay attention to the "Internet whining" a lot more (Mario Kart patch, folders, Nintendo Direct etc...)

Hopefully we'll see some standout efforts by a couple 3rd parties at E3 that will spur the rest of the developers to compete.

I agree and hopefully that's been going on behind the scenes.

It's just a shame that it doesn't seem like we'll see across the board improvements for all multiplatform titles. Vigil already said that there won't be any improvements to the Wii U version of the game. I know that people are answering a question about what the big media criticism will be, and I think it'll be that the multiplatform games are identical to the PS3/360 versions. That's assuming that the majority of multiplatform titles on display aren't showing a difference.

If they do have a GTA5 announcement planned for their conference, then they should try to get someone from Rockstar to appear on stage to announce that the Wii U version will be the best console version of the game. I doubt that they could get Sam or Dan, but someone like Jeronimo Barrera could do it. That would send a pretty clear message that Nintendo is very serious about going after the core audience that they've been talking about.

More likely they were listening to third party requests.

A speculation thread about an upcoming console moved to community... thinking of it, really something went wrong. Maybe it should had been better to not treat it like a chatroom.
But that's true nintendo were harsh with there one year no news.

The power button is recessed like on the Wiimote, so I wouldn't imagine you'll be accidentally pressing it too often. I'd also expect that the mystery button isn't something you'll press very often, given its position on the controller

Hmm, you're probably right.

Well, it does and it doesn't. The problem is that plenty of games won't support it, and people might think that the button's broken when they press it and nothing happens.

I don't think there was much in the way of official fan reaction, but I'm sure they have a dude trawling these boards for issues with them and maybe a 3rd party convinced them that analogs would be better. It's better that they floated the circle pads last E3 to gauge reaction because even if they were sour they could always change them back, and so they did.

dream scenario:

Conference starts and Reggie struts out onto the stage. He says "We've heard the critiscm. We know some doubt that we can make a console for all types of gamers. A console that's deeper and wider. That Nintendo is only about the casual player. That Wii U will not be for the core gamer. Well, today we are going to change your mind. Let's start right now:"

New GTA V trailer rolls.

I don't think Nintendo pays attention to internet whiners at all. In fact they made it a point not to once, when they delayed bringing Xenosaga Chronicles just because Internet people were asking for it, and then waited to announce its release long enough so that it wouldn't be seen as caving to Internet complaints.

No, what I think happened is Nintendo chose the slide pads because their electronics are small and would allow the controller to be thinner and lighter. And then through months of testing it was decided that the pad needed to be more ergonomic and comfortable to hold for hours at a time, and making it so freed up more room for analogue sticks so they put them in.

Good point. Out of curiosity, I just checked the Wii U trailer from last year's E3 and they never show how it got from one screen to the other.

Watch the Zelda Wii U demo videos on YouTube - this has the mentioned function: tap on a certain field of the touchpad to switch between TV and DRC.

The Nintendo Wii U Speculation Thread Pre-E3 Survey

1) So.. how much will the Wii U cost?
Between $299 - $399 initially.

2) And when will the Wii U's Launch Day be?
While I believe the console could be launched within Q3, I'm gonna say the 18th of November (in the US anyway), just before Black Friday.

3) Your #1 Desired Launch Day Game?
Whatever Nintendo has in store for launch day, excluding Pikmin 3 and casual titles (WiiU Sports). If Retro Studios' title is for launch, it will be that.

4) Any pleasant third-party surprises for the Wii U?
Full-fledged (meaning same graphics as for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 etc.) FIFA and NHL games from EA hopefully. Maybe some Resident Evil game from Capcom as well.

5) Any predictions of media criticisms for Nintendo's behaviour/substance during E3 Week?
If Nintendo doesn't provide a spec sheet for Wii U or talk about its hardware explicitly, I can definitely see the press being grumpy over that. Otherwise I don't think there will be any greater criticism, though certain sites/magazines will perhaps use any shovelware titles available to ridicule the console.

6) What'll be your preferred food & drink of choice during the Nintendo Conference?
I have no preferences when it comes to this. I rarely eat in front of my computer (from where I will stream the media briefing). Perhaps I will make a cheese-free pizza or something for the occasion.

7) How long will the Nintendo Conference go on, and what'll be the breakdown on time spent between Wii U and 3DS?
The media briefing will go on for 70 minutes, with about 15 minutes devoted to Nintendo 3DS, and the rest of the time devoted to Wii U.

8) Predict: rate the Wii U Launch lineup from 1 (worst) to 10 (best).
I predict the Wii U launch lineup will see a rating of 8. It will most certainly be better than the launch lineup for Nintendo 3DS, but it won't be perfect.

9) Predict: any final hardware revelations?
I predict that it will be possible to upgrade the Wii U in a way similar to that of the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak. I mean, Kinect was originally planned to incorporate a microprocessor, so why couldn't the Wii U see an upgrade of RAM?

10) Predict:  any super-special applications that Nintendo's gonna spring on us?
I'm not sure what is meant by "applications", but if it's like Virtual Console and Mii I don't think there will be anything super-special but rather serious upgrades of these things.

11) Predict:  With BP now gone, who's the Nintendo fan most likely to be banned from NeoGAF during E3 Week?

12) Wild-card prediction: anything else?
The Wii U will support ray casting.

Obviously it was a brilliant Iwata mind fuck. They debuted the controller with slide pads on purpose, knowing Internet gamers would hate it. The plan all along was to redebut the controller with sticks and analog triggers, delighting the masses and causing a tectonic 180 of awesomeness.

I love it when a plan comes together :)
