The Wii U Speculation Thread VI: The Undiscovered Country

Status
Not open for further replies.
That is just one reason. The main reason is this series of threads is a regular, community driven discussion, and has been for nearly a year. It functions in a similar manner to game OTs, and unlike opinion and other idea sharing threads, doesn't get buried under mountains of other threads once the discussion has run it's course. There is no specific topic of discussion, or strict sharing of ideas, in these threads. And that's fine. But it's why it's going to community.

It is a community sharing ideas and opinions on a wide variety of topics related to the thread's title. A community that has been doing so continuously for months.
Well that's fair enough. I don't participate in those other community threads so I don't know what those commonalities are. I just hope that it begins to feel more like a community (less bickering guys, yeah?)

Exclusive for Wii U? I could see it happening, but I would still be surprised. Would be another nice incentive for core gamers.

superannuation thinks Rayman Legends may be a Wii U exclusive, though he/she doesn't elaborate as to why. I'm not buying it, though.

A timed exclusive maybe, but I just don't see it.

After they ported Rayman Origins to every system possible, they have a workflow and setup to do that again. Also, the 'Wii U exclusive features' implies only the features are exclusive.

Do we know which version of Origins sold the best? I wouldn't be surprised if it was the wii version.

It would be for Ubi's best interest to have Rayman Legends exclusive, at least for a while. If people buy the PS360Vita versions instead of the Wii U version, then they stand to make less money by not being able to sell all those NFC figurines due to the other consoles not having the NFC feature.

Hmm.. Nintendo fans seem to have the messiest, fiercest intra-community fights of all fan groups. Nothing's going to magically stop us from squabbling. But we'll still be perfectly cordial when the arguing is over.

So.. umm.. let's talk about our favorite Zelda games again, and where we want the series to go!
(just kidding. Please.. let's not!)

Good point. That makes a lot of sense actually.

I know I've tangled with a fair number of other regulars in here.

I still love you all though.

This whole thing has felt like a compliment to me, in some strange way. I like that this has become a "community."

I could see timed exclusivity happening if Nintendo promised to back it with some marketing. Having it featured in commercials where they're showing various games for the system would be a good thing for the game. Plus, I think platformers in general sell better on Nintendo platforms. So it'd be a good fit.

There was speculation that it was the Wii version, but I'm not sure if we ever received concrete numbers. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the Vita or even 3DS version became the highest selling eventually. Less competition, digital versions available, and launch title (in Vita's case).

Speaking of NFC, do you guys think there is a big enough market to support a large number of franchises all with their own collectible figurines? Skylanders has proven there is a big market, but I can just hear the parents saying "but you never play with all those figures we bought you for game you already own, we're not going to start buying you a whole new collection for another game you'll forget about in 6 months time!"

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
I think that PS720 will be around 4 - 6 times PS360. I don't expect memory pools to be larger then 2Gb but do expect a reasonable increase in GPU performance. Maybe even 10x the performance of current gen.

CPU wise, probably only 2-3x. I don't expect huge leaps here.

So overal. Something like 4 - 6 times what we have now. Anything more will be a bonus.

Ok, thanks. To visualize it we would then expect the spread to be something along the lines of this:
Code:
3 = Xbox 360
U = Wii U
X = Xbox3/PS4

--[B]3[/B]-[B]U[/B]--[B]U[/B]------------------------[B]X[/B]-------------------[B]X[/B]
--1----|----2----|----3----|----4----|----5----|----6

Smash Bros could easily do it.

I can completely understand the reticence of people to go to Community to find the thread. As others have said, it's something new, and people like ruts. For me, I've had this account setup to automatically subscribe to every thread I post in since the Search went out the first time. That way, I can scan the first few pages for new threads, and then go to my Subscriptions to find any other threads that I've posted in that have updates. Been doing that so long that a move to Community will be inconsequential for keeping up with the thread, in my case, at least.

To subscribe to all threads you've posted in,

1) USER CP
2) Edit Options
3) Default Thread Subscription Mode -> No email notification
4) Save Changes

The only issue is for thread VII and beyond. However if those start off in Gaming (which they should), then I'm sure I'll post in them at least once before they get moved to Community, anyways. :)

Yeah definitely, but it helps that those are recognisable characters. What I doubt is whether other publishers will be able to replicate Skylanders' success by bringing in a new IP (well Spyro was an existing IP but plays a very small role in the success) onto Wii U and selling a new range of unknown characters

Edit: A possible solution is to pay more attention to the figurines themselves so that they are of such a nice quality that they are something you might want to collect in and of themselves. I already know enough otaku who collect figurines of anime/ game characters; they would be psyched if the next bunch of figurines they bought had NFC chips built in for gaming purposes.

I was surprised at the Rayman 3DS demo looking as good as it did. The 3DS in general consistently surprises me, I've been too indoctrinated by the doom, to be honest.

Doubt Rayman Legends will be exclusive, even if it's timed it probably won't be for long.

My Crow T Robot 'Is it 11:30/time for lunch yet?' skit and the Seinfeld gif with Jerry and George sitting in the diner "talking about the conference" both subliminally pushed me to go to a sit down restaurant and have an old fashioned burger and fries.

Count me in the heavily doubting Rayman Origins is exclusive group.

Yeah, Smash could do it. Though I hope NFC doesn't lead to Nintendo nickel and dimming consumers.

Whoever suggested the idea of 3DS carts having chips detectable by NFC, I like that.

Anybody thought of little NFC stickers as pre-order bonuses? Or something.. I don't know why I find the idea of NFC stickers so appealing

You are on to something

NFC might be that x factor to sway publishers to invest in exclusive WiiU games.
Putting their money in merchandising versus extra console versions.

But this means Nintendo has to deliver enough consoles in the hands of consumers.
Nintendo might then sell the WiiU under 300 and take the loss.

Nintendo is creating a trifecta of options that publishers cannot ignore:
NFC, the Tablet Controller, and a publisher friendly online service.

I see a snowball effect of games heading to WiiU.
The minute one third party publisher starts making big money on merchandising and NFC...

Yep. That's my expectation. I don't expect a huge leap for next gen PS360.

A good example of this was The Godfather.

The Godfather on Wii was way more fun than the 360/PS3 versions.

Yet Godfather sold way more on 360/PS3. I'm sure there's many reasons for this, but this is one example.

Ahhh the Godfather. I wish all the people that hated on motion control early on played this game. It put the PS360 versions to shame, was 20x more fun, and actually made playing GTA4 a downgrade to me.

I don't know, it all sounds like a stretch. On cell phones it's MOSTLY a gimmick, even though there are some real world uses coming up, on a video game controller...it's pushing it, even for nintendo. I truly wonder if they have a lot of ideas for it, or if they are doing it for future proofing and hope they come with a good way to milk it down the line.

NFC makes it really easy to register/lock your game to your system for the whole anti-used thing they have going on next gen. No entering numbers or creating accounts - just scan the tag.

Yeah this thread has been a community thread for a very long time.

Yup. Hasn't been a speculation thread since like... thread 2. lol
Well, for the most part.

I have to wonder how well something like this would take off across multiple games. There's no way in heck my parents would have funded an addiction like that when I was a kid, and I sort of feel the same way (although my oldest isn't even 2 years old yet and has never played a video game).

Man, but I could see some insane Pokemon monetization off this feature.

This thread was created to keep non-news Wii U discussion in one place because we were specifically asked to. People were "tired of seeing all the Wii U threads" during/after E3, so fine. All of the technical speculation about the hardware, ideas for the tablet, discussions about which games are underway, etc - it was all done in here. Now that this is being transplanted into Community, does that mean we can go back to how it was before? Or does there have to be actual news/interviews about Wii U before making a thread about it?

What would be the point of this?

I dunno, Mii bonuses or something small and gimmicky for owning a 3DS game, it unlocking some stuff on your Wii U profile.

I'm generally opposed to NFC for big things because buying stuff =/= having fun. Cross content goodies from 3DS games is nice, as you still have a game, and you're not buying stupid statues just to unlock half the game.

Sure, if the news warrants a new thread. Random forum rumour doesn't warrant a new thread, but legitimate news (which we should see a lot more of at this time of year) deserves new threads.

Not to go off-topic, but what are the chances of that Xbox 360 ban going through? Would it affect Wii U alot or only very little?

I don't think that Rayman Legends will be exclusive to Wii U, but that it will have exclusive features for it.

Let's face it: Origins could have done a lot better and if they don't want Legends to become the same "success", then they have to release it on every platform again.

So: Rayman Legends not Wii U exclusive. And doesn't matter really.

Doubt it would make much difference. Even if stores sold out of consoles for a while, I don't think many people would go to Walmart or wherever with the intention to buy a 360, see they are out of stock and think "well then I'll buy this other console instead"!
