Then personally, for me, it won't beat 2006. That's just how I feel, and I know most people here feel similarly but won't say it because they want 2012 to be 2006. They may even crown 2012 right after it's done. But when the dust settles, 2006 will still be on the throne.

You are putting 2006 on quite the pedestal. I loved 2006, but 2012 can be amazing (yes, better than 2006), and it doesn't need x game to do it.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting all this, but are most of the rumors basically saying Nintendo has been sending out underpowered dev kits(xbox/ps3 range), and they are going to reveal some substantial leap at e3? That is what it always sounds like. What exactly is stopping a third party from producting a game that looks like the Zelda tech demo, or the bird demo? Killer Freaks is being made completely for the Wii U and didn't look anything at all like those demos. Not that it looked bad, but it didn't look like that. Was that just Nintendo's usual magic, or what?

I'll take a new Retro IP over Smash Brothers: This Time with Actual Online Play (We Promise!) and Zelda Kajillion any day of the week, thank you very much.

I would take it over Metroid, but not Smash or Zelda. Especially imagining what those two games will look like on Wii U.

Hype yourselves up all you want, you'll have to deal with it when the train derails. Personally, I got burned from last year. I didn't even sleep the night before, and yet the Wii U reveal was so pedestrian and lacking. The only thing that made up for it was the 3DS stuff, and even that was lacking in third-party stuff compared to the previous E3.
You should have realized that was going to be the case. I mean, look at last time Nintendo revealed a new game console - Nintendo doesn't reveal anything at all when they first announce a console. At least in 2011 they showed some games that were in development, they showed some tech demos, they showed the controller. Back in 2005 when they first showed the Wii, they showed diddly (Iwata talked about "mysteries" that would be revealed "later").

Here's the original Wii reveal - not bad really, but nowhere near as awesome as the 2006 show.

Check out all the exciting Wii (Revolution) selling points from that conference:

  • It's small!
  • Horizontal or vertical standing
  • Various colors!
  • 12cm Optical Disc
  • Backwards compatible with Gamecube through same drive
  • Addon device lets you play DVD movies
  • 512MB onboard flash memory
  • Vague reference to future Wiiware
  • When you turn on Revolution for the first time and see the graphics, you will say "Wow"
  • Wifi built in
  • Wireless controllers
  • Controllers will be very unique
  • Iwata is pushing the Smash Bros. team to be one of the Wifi-enabled titles enabled at launch (one of two Revolution announcements that got a full cheer)
  • Mario and Zelda given a callout, Metroid Prime 3 given a 4 second video
  • Square-Enix working on Wifi-enabled Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
  • Revolution is the most developer-friendly console, so third parties are gonna flock
  • Virtual Console (second of two Revolution announcements that got a full cheer)
  • Core gamers, Casual gamers, and New gamers will be happy

Back in 2005 when they first showed the Wii, they showed diddly.

Not true, they announced Smash, Prime 3, and the Virtual Console. IMO nothing shown in 2011 compared to the weight of those three announcements. The tech demos were nice, but they were tech demos. The third party stuff was nice, but they were just ports. Not a single, true first-party game was announced or shown last year -- short of NSMBMii, which transformed from a tech demo to a real game. (Or something like that.)

They did announce Smash last year of course, but it seems much farther out than Brawl did... and Brawl hit three years afterwards.

No.

I don't know for sure but my understanding is the interface, online, etc... are the things that are still a mystery to third parties.

As far as Killer Freaks is concerned, I would expect it to look noticeably nicer at this E3.

It was so rough at the last one for various reasons.

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
Looking back, Wii only had 27 titles palyable on the show floor:

At Nintendo's pre-E3 press conference, executive vice president of sales and marketing, Reggie Fils-Aime, told the audience that Wii 27 titles would be available to play on the E3 floor this week. The following is a breakdown of the games actually on display.

1- Super Mario Galaxy (temporary name)
2- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
3- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
4- Red Steel
5- Excite Truck
6- Sonic: Wild Fire
7- Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz
8- Project H.A.M.M.E.R.
9- Demo: Shooting
10- Demo: Obstacle
11- Demo: Table Tennis
12- WarioWare: Smooth Moves
13- Final Furlong
14- Madden NFL 07
15- Tony Hawk¿s Downhill Jam
16- SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab
17- Elebits
18- One Piece Ultimate Adventure
19- Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2
20- Wii Sports: Tennis
21- Wii Sports: Golf
22- Wii Sports: Baseball
23- Wii Sports: Airplane
24- Necro-Nesia
25- Bomberman Land
26- Wii Music: Orchestra
27- SD Gundam

..with 8 of those being demos from Wii Play, Sports, Music. I hope Wii U can top that with third party games alone.

---

edit. off the top of my head...

1. Killer Freaks
2. Batman
3. Lego City
4. Darksiders 2
5. Project Cars
6. Rayman Legends
7. Blops2
8. Some Tom Clancy game
9. Assasin's Creed 3
10. Metro Last Light
11. ..??...

i just skimmed over a video of 2006 and it's probably the worst "aging" conference

also the 90s video package they used for the DS montage is kind of incredible

2011 had TWO Smash games (including it's first portable outing)

Basically announced as the same game, and considering Kid Icarus wasn't close to being finished when they were announced that puts both of them farther out than Brawl was. Hard to get hyped for a game like 4+ years off.

and goddamn Zelda in HD.

Oh, that was a game? Should I be looking forward to Bird Flying Through Rose Petals HD, too?

Developer discussion with Wii U hardware producer Katsuya Eguchi Tuesday, June 5 @ 11:30 p.m. PDT

^^
this will probably be what GDC 2005 was to the Wii , we will probably have an idea of the CPU,GPU, OS and so fourth,,,
but before that we have:
Nintendo E3 Presentation Tuesday, June 5 @ 9 a.m. PDT
basically the whole June 5th date will be full of reveals.

and
Software Showcase Wednesday, June 6 @ 6 p.m. PDT
so something else to look up too the next day ;)

For sure. A lot of those games turned out to be meh. Or downright bad. Or cancelled. Or never localized.

But at the time... god damn what a show.

Seriously, after the horrid reveal the Wii U got last year, Nintendo had better come out with balls hanging and guns firing! I want asses kicked and names taken.

1. No, that rumor was never really true. The original dev kits were somewhat close to something like that though. They were shipped out a year ago, with off the shelf hardware, that ended up having to be severely downclocked due to heating issues. Since then the dev kits have improved substantially, and more recently the dev kits have shipped out with the custom gpu/cpu that Nintendo and their partners have been designing(work on the gpu finished earlier this year I believe?).

2. Killer Freaks started as a 360 game, the build we saw at E3 was an alpha build of that 360 game working with the WiiU controller.

Most conferences look worse when you go back to them. Remember when RE5 and MGS4 hype was off the charts? Remember Killzone 2's "totally-realtime" trailer?

Time makes fools of us all. But the impact of the events will never be forgotten.

One thing that never ages: Twilight Princess reveal. Still the most awesome reveal ever from any Nintendo event.

Thanks for the info. Some of these rumors always come off as a kind vaguely intentional hint of sorts, so I never know exactly where they are coming from. Well, unless you say something as bold as Starfox/Metroid. Never new about Killer Freaks being a 360 game at first, so that is a bit surprising. Hopefully they don't just give us an exclusive up-port and really put their foot into it.

I don't even like the game and going back and watching its reveal still brings some chills. The music and tone of the trailer were just so unexpected...

Actually, the music is the same used for the E3-2002 Wind Waker trailer. :p

That would certainly be disappointing given the amount of time they have had. I think we'll be surprised by that game though.

I'm just saying, read the 2005 conference thread around the time of the Revolution reveal - lotta disappointment in there. It happened in 2005, it should have been expected in 2011.

Lol, I remember in 2006 before the controller reveal, everyone was expecting Revolution to have a touch interface.

Finally, the rumors are true!!
That's what I found funny about the project Café rumours. A lot of people guessed a touch screen controller when Nintendo were teasing about their Revolution. I guess that illustrates how the Wii remote was really out of left field, but Wii U is a bit more obvious and in line with current market trends.

Brawl was announced in 2005 before Sakurai even knew he was making it! Development started in October of that year. At least this time he saw it coming. So the time between the original announcement and development beginning is only a few months of difference, and with the lead designer being aware ahead of time of his involvement.

I prefer the Space World reveal, though. It has music actually from the series and tells a little story of Link versus the Moblins.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQ7riCXrDxY

I loved the shit out of that trailer. It really showed off the art style's ability to highlight fluid, energetic animation. It also has the original character model, which I think I ultimately prefer to the mildly reactionary final one. At the very least I'd have probably preferred it to lobster pajamas.

So, what are the chances that we'll see a new IP from one of Nintendo's Japanese studios? I'm not talking about a new Wii __ type game, but something more along the lines of a platformer, action or adventure game. I think the general speculation is that Retro are working on a new IP, so it seems like we'll see one from their biggest Western studio.

I think chances are pretty good if you like $7 eShop games.

Being realistic, I say the chances are low. Making a brand new character property is something Nintendo seems to be very careful about and we've had no hints one is in the process. If memory serves, with Pikmin we had whispers about a new game concept and universe well before it was shown off.

if anything, they may make it some eshop thing. this depends if miyamoto is actually working with a smaller team and if he's making a new 'character' game or whatever.
