Halo |OT4| Trust's a Tough Thing to Come by These Days

Hearsay from another forum... not sure how that's looked upon here, or askin for someone to shed any light, just wondering what y'all think:

My contacts from within 343 told me that there was a huge conflict of philosophy between people within Bungie that escalated during Halo 2. There were basically two cliques, the founding members and the new bloods who wanted to create a new cinematic direction including advanced mo-cap and other cinematic features. However, the old group were focused on not selling out and keeping the same garage developer feeling that they used to have. It all came to a head after Halo 3 and that's where 343 Industries sprang from. These people had a bigger vision for the franchise and wanted to give it the star treatment.

So we have COD, Halo and some Retro guys who worked on Metroid on the team. So what you basically have is the production values of a Modern Warfare, the atmosphere of Metroid Prime and the tight gun play of Halo. For years, I've been telling this guy (a non-dev Bungie original) how Halo needs to feel more like you're in a suit rather than just a UI and a floating gun. Basically he said that Bungie was all about gameplay and graphics were the last thing they cared about. I guess that's good, but when you're competing against games like Killzone and MW which have ridiculous production values, just gameplay alone won't cut it.

I'm absolutely stoked because I love the Halo Universe, and I hope they keep that feel of exploration where there's not always a whole lot of action happening all the time and you're just exploring this living world. I don't want the game to be too much like COD where you're basically running from action scene to action scene. I liked Halo: CE in that it felt like you were on this living world that only reacted to you when you touched it instead of COD where if you walk past this point, you trigger action sequence # 455.

My baby, the Carbine. Man, the possibility of SO bieng supported for a number of years...that just puts a huge smile on my face.

Whole game so far makes me feel unsettled. In a good, intended way. But it's all very creepy.

Light Rifle looks nice. :3

5 or more shots to kill on anything but the fully-automatic weapons would be a disappointment.
I agree, but I'm not foolish enough to get my hopes up for the human rifles and the covenant carbine. Even if the BR is back to 4SK, bloom, recoil, and spread make them less than optimal. From what I can tell from the demo, the Forerunner rifle has none of those.

So what happened with those MLG folks at e3?

They are playtesting tomorrow afternoon with news/fans for a few hours, along with that MLG is recording footage for their MLG Anaheim weekend with some 343i folks heading there Friday. As a MLG/Halo fans this doesn't make any sense since it's going to just be PC and Fighters at the event and no Halo, but if it's new footage I'm all for it.

That's a LOT of precision weapons, they're starting to add up. Needed due to the unlocking mechanic, but I wonder how well they will be differentiated.

Exactly, everyone's talking about DMR versus BR, but there's a whole heap of primary precision weapon that the sandbox has to account for. It will be interesting seeing how they balance that particular element.

Style (sound and aesthetic), mechanics (some people prefer a faster burst gun like the BR while other's prefer single shot), it's going to be more a matter of preference and since we can select our primary and secondary now, I see no harm in having more weapons, especially with the unlocking mechanic in Multiplayer.

Agreed, I'm intrigued to see if they really will be balanced at launch/before any patches.

I don't like it. It sounds like 3 and Reach's, which sounded slow. Listen to Anniversary's, it sounds like it's going to shred something with a bullet shower, 4's sounds throttled in comparison. BR sounds fine to me though.

What? Halo 4's AR sounds like machine gun, a powerful one, which is good.
That said, it sounds wrong too, too much like a machine gun instead of of an assault rifle.
Ah, well, i'll be using the BR and Storm Rifle and whatever the Promethean counterpart for AR is.

- The game looks to have astonishing production values. Graphically it's on a par with anything I've seen on the 360 and further footage pending, may actually be the best I've seen. I just hope the 360 can keep up, framerate-wise.

- Watching the latter part of the jungle sequence, I got a real 'Predator' vibe from the footage; it felt as though you were being watched, paranoia creeping up increasingly.

- The sound design was particularly impressive. I don't think Alien Shogun has anything to worry about: listen to the Chiefs fall at the beginning and his subsequent steps. The weapons sounded great as was expected after the bombast of CEA's weapons.

- The motion of the Elite was well done and the way he pushed the Grunt was a nice little touch.

- New enemy design was slightly generic but this was eclipsed by the fact it's the first new 'race' of enemy we've seen since Halo 2; it's new and different enough from Brutes and Elites to be exciting.

-------------------------

- New multi footage looks fast. Very important after the often sluggish Reach. Most of the new weapons look overpowered rather than under, which is a good thing.

- The BR still sounds a little 'off' to me. It should sound like the crack of a explosive-laced whip rather than the toy gun sound we have now.

- The announcer is surely placeholder seeing as this is B-roll from months ago. Right guys?

Overall, very impressed, bravo to all involved and I'm infinitely more hyped for the game than I was from earlier reveals. Great stuff.

Sounds a lot like Reach's AR to me, which I didn't like. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm fickle, I liked using CE's AR (and 2/ODST's SMGs) solely because they sounded cool to fire.

I swear the sound effects are very, very different.

I agree with Halo CE AR and 2/ODST SMG being awesome though.
I think it's the campaign footage acoustics that are throwing me off, it sounds pretty different in the War Games b-roll now that I'm rewatching it. Though it's mostly the way it sounds like it shoots slower.

olololololololololol Halo 4 looks so fucking awesome hahahahahaha. I'm fuckin giddy

yeaahhhhh buddy.

To think, we havent REALLY seen any MP, nothing about the AA's, support upgrades, tactical packages, unlocks, maps other than speculation.

We havent seen basically ANY Spartan Ops stuff or More than 2% of the campaign.

Nothing about theater/forge.

We've seen about 3% of the total package and we're fucking amped. Imagine once we really know what this game is about!! :D

EDIT: More stuff we have yet to see: How Waypoint is going to continue the tradition of online stat tracking with H4, how that new SmartGlass tech truly will work with H4, I'm so happy that they're going all in with the Halo franchise.

Odd considering it seems to have a lot faster rate of fire. Halo 4 AR sound is a bit softer, i think.
4's has a 32 shot mag while CE's has 60. They both seem to empty at the same time so I guess there's my answer. CE's AR ROF was just insane because it had a higher capacity. Bring that back!

So are we getting multiplayer reveal tomorrow? Is that correct? I thought I heard Frankie say that was when it opens up on the show floor

Well guys, it happened. The unthinkable. Overslept. Didn't even set record on my DVR.

Being forced to watch everything now online.

I could cry.

I meant faster than Reach's AR. I really don't compare across games, that's not relevant usually.

Let's see, Halo 3 AR had 32 round mag with 16 rounds per second ROF.
Reach's AR has 32 round mag and is slightly slower, i think, maybe 14 or 15 rounds a second. Gotta test that.
If i recall correctly, Halo CE AR (60 round mag) had 15 or 16 rounds per second ROF, i think it took almost 4 seconds the empty the magazine (but the accuracy deteoritated really badly after 1.5 second of firing). But i'm not sure, again, need to test this too.

Is this being streamed or do we have to wait for someone to record some handheld footage?

I have not heard anything besides IGN show happening at the exact time the Pros/Fans are playing and MLG recording footage with Gamespot tomorrow. I would love to see some, some of the THC guys will be there recording (if its allowed).

The live-action trailer is available at press.xbox360.com now. If you want to have it in better quality. :)

Sounds like it is a public event, so yeah I hope recording is allowed.
