The most beautiful modern 2D games!

Let's post the visually most amazing modern 2D games (no classics here)! They can be 2D or 2.5D, indie or AAA, it doesn't matter.

I'll start with Trine 2:

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Ugh, 3D isn't 2D, at least set 2.5D or 3D w 2D gameplay in the title as well to not disappoint more people...

It was like a bad bad prank to have that be the first thing to catch one's eye when getting in.

Punk'd :(

you're right, but Trine 2 is gorgeous, so I'll say it's fine :)

It's 2D gameplay, that's what counts. I should have explained it better but I'll post something totally 2D to make up for it.

The upcoming Toki remake (if it ever comes out...):

You can almost hear the water if you stare at that...

So good that it came with a great hack and slash on top too.

Deadlight looks amazing.

As for the other Rayman is simply brilliant looks better than the WiiU mario game which looks too 'clean'

And Outland was just startling and I really liked Limbo as well.

I wanted to say Machinarium, but then, looking at some screenshot, it's the synthesis of art style and music that makes it so striking. And it's not necessarily 2D, it's flat.

You people calling Muramasa a bad game should be ashamed of yourselves. It has some of the very best 2D boss fights in quite awhile. Great patterns to learn that serve up just the right amount of challenge(if you aren't using items). The controls are also very responsive and well implemented.

I'd say it's a lot better than many of the so called "classic" sidescrollers of the old days.

Basically it fixed the two main problems Odin Sphere had, namely the slowdown and lack of level design. Though the story isn't as well done as Odin Sphere's, sadly.

slightly off topic, but these are some glorious concepts for 2D demakes of recent games:

Personally, I wanted to love it, but found it dreadfully boring.. I do agree the boss designs are wicked cool, but the gameplay is as shallow as a flash game.

Do we have one of these every week? Not that I'm complaining about having 2D threads pop up often, but it's quite often just a relisting of the same games, lol.

Even though it might not be a 2D sidescroller, games like Jamestown still count, and are often left out (Even though it's modern!)

Was also nicely impressed with the quality of spritework in Delve Deeper:

And I think it's pretty funny, that Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds seems to be doing a better job at well-rounded 2D than it more-HD fighting game prequel. There's a certain Beauty to such classic 2D spritework that will always feel more lively and genuine to me than almost any of the 2.5D in the OP.

Same can be said for Scott Pilgrim, which I really like for getting the character and backgrounds in the same consistent pixel style, which is more rare than it needs to be:

And I might not be a huge fan of it's motion, but Persona 4 Mayoknockinpeoplearound looks great in many ways.

And by law, I'm required to mention:

King-Of-Fighters-XIII.jpg

Spritework and hand-drawn will always just be a notch above 2.5D polygon stuff for me. They're getting a LOT better at it though, but it's similiar to, say, how artist used to hand-drawn the Gundams fighting in the animes, now they use toon-shade CG models. They've gotten WAY, WAY better since the days of the G-Savior movie, but it'll never 100% replace the beauty of an OVA-quality hand-animated fight.

Rayman Origins takes the cake for me. Vivid and stunning on a HD TV.

I'll also chuck in DKC Returns. The levels are rich with detail and movement - Retro Studios really pushed the Wii with this.

The level of detail in Rayman Origins is jaw-droppingly insane when you consider how fast most players are going to go through the levels.

I don't see how it is any more shallow than any other sidescrolling action game. There was weapon crafting, cooking and stuff like that to do on the side, plenty of optional bosses, weapons breaking, and the combat design was not just mashing "attack" over and over again. I can't think of any similar types of games which I would call "deeper" than Muramasa.

If there is any critique I would level it would be that fighting so many enemies can get somewhat old after awhile, but that is something that virtually any action game will suffer from. Also the level design could have been more creative, but it was still satisfying to traverse the world from area to area.

I would be quite interested to hear any specific examples of similar types of games that do a better job than Muramasa does.

I know what it is. More then any other game in this thread just about, including Muramasa, Rayman Origins feels like concept art brought directly to life, before it was forced through "gamey" constraints that would make it feel tiled or rigid.

Where the hell is the Hardcorps: Uprising high res shots GAF?

Yeah, it's (in some ways) of or ASW's better animated games too ;), so it deserves mention! (why not post screens yourself?)

Also, this is pretty much a Rayman thread.

Anyone calling out Muramasa for it's puppeteer animation, and not Origins, I don't entirely understand. At least Muramasa goes 1 step further, in trying to have some real handdrawn Rotation of limbs and stuff in there, as well as the flash-like "on bones" object manipulation.

2D ps1 games like legend of mana -- saga frontier 2

Very nice screens. Legends of Mana and Saga 2 have a style all their own, and I'm sad to have not seen the style carried into HD. Half-hearted versions of the style pop up in Browser games now, I guess... :/

Zack Zero is 2D gameplay but 2.5D levels.

Canabalt is the best 2D platformer i played since a long time. Most close i came to epilepsy also.

The engine is literally concept art brought to life. Whatever the many talented artists at Ubi draw, it can instantly be transported into the game, in 1080p resolution, running at 60fps.

Such a beautiful, fun video game. It reminds me why I'm still playing these things.

Gundams are still hand drawn.

And most anime really, it's just composited digitally.
