I'm really starting to like the look of it. Time to sell all my unused *DS stuff to try and get this sucker.

I don't know if this was discussed but one thing that caught m attention when looking at the Kotaku system comparrison is Nintendo left a ton of empty real estate on the 3DSXL between the buttons on the right side of the system.

Is it possible that they left that open for a more elegant clip-on CPP?

They should do another ambassador thing for people who already own a 3DS.

This sense of entitlement is insane. They did nothing like this with DSLite, DSi, DSiXL, GBASP, GBASP+, GBMicro, GBPocket, or GBColor. You're crazy if you think this idea makes any sense beyond "Heh, heh, Nintendo should give me more free stuff, heh, heh."

So what I would like to do is transfer my DSiWare games to my current 3DS now. Then trade my DSi to Gamestop to get the trade bonus towards a 3DS XL. Then when the XL comes out, I want to transfer everything on my current 3DS, including the recently transferred DSiWare games, to the XL and give my old 3DS to my wife. Is anyone aware of any issues with trying to do any of this?

The games will transfer over fine, this way. Be aware that save files get wiped on DSiWare when they transfer, though.

for me, the major thing I want to know is if this model will stop the scratching that happened on the older 3DS models and the ugly marks from the circle pad....

I see it has plastic bumps this time that MIGHT prevent that happening a bit better. Will invest in screen protectors this time though!

They should do another ambassador thing for people who already own a 3DS. Provide proof of purchase of both original 3DS and the XL and get sent a code to be able to download like 10 games or something.

People need to realize, Nintendo did the Ambassador set because of special circumstances

a) They cut the price of a system they had released less than 6 months ago, not a decision Nintendo takes lightly, and they knew early adopters would feel a bit miffed by it.
b) Due to various circumstances, those 6 months were kind of dire. From the failed attempt to give Third Parties a chance to shine at launch, up to the lousy release list of those first 6 months. Plus the delay of the eShop to boot. Nintendo knew they bungled the launch, so they owed it to the loyal fans that brought a 3DS, and still had it by the time the ambassador announcement rolled around.

This is different, it's a a console revision and Nintendo hasn't added a thing to it to make the older 3DS model any less relevant, other than ironing out some design issues here and there. The new system even costs more in comparison to the 3DS anyway. So there's no immediate need to upgrade unless you really fancy the better battery life and bigger screens. At least the system transfer option will let me keep my Ambassador perks.

While people could argue till the sun does down about how much 20 free retro games means to them, really Nintendo didn't HAVE to do the Ambassador scheme at all. But they did it, as they admitted the 3DS's bad performance was due to neglect on their part. It was a one off, will never happen again (and it it ever does in the near future, I'ld say we'd need to worry more about Nintendo's health as a company then)

Looks like they've stopped it to me.

Now that the plastic/rubber stoppers are resting directly on the raised bezel, I don't see how that raised bezel can come in contact with the top screen now.

god bless you. Probably some eye trickery but it does look like the rubber things might come off to the side a bit.

I probably should have drew some lines myself lmao.

The whole things seems soo much more sensibly designed and I cannot wait to get one. I'm tired of keeping a cleaning cloth between my 3DS's screens. Even with the cloth it still manages to leave smudges/marks.

Anyone thinking of keeping their 3DSPhat and getting this?

I'm still on the fence because I think the original model looks a lot better but that screen comparable to the Vita's size is calling me.

Original looks good on press shots, but fingerprints... everywhere!

Just wait until you get your hands on one soon before you preorder ;P

I really hope this doesn't catch on because it's a profoundly dumb nick name. We're not seeing a slimmer, smaller revision, we're seeing one that's outright called Extra Large, it's not even thinner, the one area where it could have been smaller.

And... yeah, I'm keeping my first 3DS, but as a result I'm not getting this one right away. I want to see how the blue looks, get impressions (namely of the D-Pad), and if they put out a white should the blue look crappy enough in practice.

Looks great except for the chunky menu buttons.

Also it's about time. I've been waiting for this.

The actual shell looks a lot more slick than the lopsided sandwich of the OG 3DS.

I'm not tired of it. I started sandwiching a micro fiber cloth due to the scratching issue (launch 3DS here, though no scratches or marks). I really like having a cloth handy to wipe any dust. I'll be continuing the practice on XL for that reason alone.

I guess you never owened a 3DS before? 'cause you will be happy to hear that you can resize them. You can make the so tiny that up to (umm i think) 60 of them are on the screen.

I believe he means the three buttons below the touch screen. I personally like the way they look much more.

So, who wants to start 'Operation Snowfall' to get the white version in US?

Already started (lol). Sent an e-mail (while thinking to myself "why not?"). While I did ask the reasoning behind the colors, I more so made the e-mail as a suggestion to release the other colors here in America. Here was the reply:

Thanks for writing about the Nintendo 3DS XL.  It's great to hear you are interested in it and I'll be sure to document your comments about the available colors of the system and make certain they are forwarded to other departments here at Nintendo.

I know it would be great to tell you that other colors like White or Black have been announce, however, we do not have any additional information at the moment.
If additional new colors are announced in the future, we'll be sure to post the news to our website, www.nintendo.com, so be sure to check back from time to time.

As to why these are the only available colors in the United States, I again do not have the answer.

I love this thing but I really wish they would've redesigned the location of the power switch. It's too close to the pause button. At least they fixed the stylus location as that was a nightmare to get to.

You kids are crazy... This design is excellent. Looks so much nicer than the original, and I'm excited to see the black and blue console in person, since that's a fairly original color/shade choice for Nintendo.

Interesting…
That pic makes it look thinner than I expected.
According to Nintendo it's half a mm thicker compared to the DS Lite

top chart taken from wikipedia
bottom 3DS XL data from Nintendo's Press Release
It looks thinner cause the curved edges. Wouldn't be surprised if it feels a little thinner in the hand as well just cause of that, might be thicker in the middle but it looks like it'll be thinner all around the sides. Apple does the same thing with most of their portable stuff to disguise thickness a bit.
I have a feeling 3DS is going down in price or XL will just overtake it.
I think that's the point, the margins are probably better on the XL.
What's the reason for Silver not available in NA?
The anti Raider conspiracy extends even to Nintendo. I bet there's a lot of bitter Seahawk fans up there in Redmond.

I've ordered blue, but I'm still undecided on whether to order red instead. I already have the 25th anniversary red DSi XL and it'd go nicely with that.

It would help if we had proper pics, the promo shots have been different colours so far:

So, which blue is it? Number 2 is obviously far superior.

Yeah the bottom blue does look better.

Guess we will find out once hands-on videos come out.
