Sega only making 4 retail IPs, closes 5 publishing offices, focuses on digital

Sega's new IP's haven't been great, if I'm honest. I'm cool with their choice if those 50-75 "digital" titles are their classic IPs for the HD generation.

"It's a focus on those four core IP, and in addition to that we'll have digital. And digital still means 50 - 75 releases every year, so that's still a big number."

50 to 75 digital titles (not SKU) per year?!? Wow, even with all iOS/Android/Win stuff that's a lot.

Right now we know for about 4-5 core digital titles - Jet Set Radio, Cave, Hell Yeah, Sonic Adventure 2 and... ? Mobile stuff are not that much either.

SEGA is preparing huge back catalog? And maybe release some jap titles like Yakuza and AR in digital form?

Hope so.

Unless I misunderstood, isnt the thread title kinda misleading? Its only Sega Europe, and whatever main franchise titles they control/distribute, correct? Aside from the few key franchises, i'd think Sega of Japan is the "important" one.

Or is this the start of the entire thing snowballing?

Wait, what about Monkey Ball?

Granted, there hasn't been a good Monkey Ball game since 1&2 (and I guess DS), but surely that franchise isn't just DEAD, is it?

Do the right thing, SEGA: Release the Monkey Ball 2 engine with a robust stage creator. Sell it for $100 on PC for all I care, but don't let my monkeys die out!

I think he was talking SKUs. Sonic 4 Ep2, for example, would count as like 6 'releases'.

So like...does this affect America in any way? Just wonderin'

they've already had their recent restructure, so I'd imagined no.

Best of luck to those affect by these closure, I also hope that they'll be able to recover and expand later on with retail releases...just bring Yakuza 5 to the West either Digital/Retail.

If SEGA manage this right old fans could profit from this. Lots of their old franchises don't really lend themselves to a retail model but would stand out in the digital space if they manage to make some quality titles.

10 years after leaving hardware manufacturing... At this rate this sounds like they will struggle to survive 10 more years from now ... :/
It would of been stupid business wise but Sega it would of been great to see them support the Dreamcast until the bitter end. At least we would of gotten better games from them.

That's what I'm thinking about how the games will be seperated on the platforms that are coming :

Sonic will be huge on Wii U and 3DS (with some exclusive games).
Total War on PC
the rest including Sonic (it will be minimum for Sonic) will be multiplatform.
Digital downloads will be multiplatform (including Wii U eshop)

Wow, the mismanagement of the last two decades is getting ridiculous. How the fuck are you going to be failing that bad with so many IPs?

Time to start selling them I think.

This is the same company that got Camelot ready for Shining Force 3 remake Wii, and Shining Force 4. Then when pulled the demand was so high, that they cancelled the contract to make Shining Hearts, a dating sim RPG, and Shining Cross EXA. They cancelled the Camelot titles because they didn't want completion with there internal development.

*sigh*

Seriously, who wanted these Shining Force games that don't resemble Shining Force. Granted Shining Cross could be a fun multiplayer online game, if they converted it to XBOX live or PSN as budget titles, they would do well. Otherwise who can play it?

This is how I feel...about Samba Di Amigo.

The Eye Toy version on PS2 was more accurate than the Wii version. Still a shame that it is nowhere to be seen for Move or Kinect. Same with Monkey Ball - my last memory of it was a clunky version on Wii.

Source please? I haven't heard about such deals before. But I'd like to make sure you aren't bullshitting me, because dumping Camelot for Tony Taka meat-dolls is sickening.

This seems like a smart move for SEGA to me.

As a PC gamer I haven't bought a physical release in years.
So the increased focus on digital is a plus for me, as it also seems to mean a bigger focus on PC.

I see no reason games like Yakuza couldn't be digital only releases. Well, except for artificial size limits on the consoles I guess.

Isn't retail way more important for AAA titles? I don't think SEGA could sustain the Yakuza franchise as it is only by DD tbh.

It'd be like picking up an egg, tossing out the yolk (the corporate dumb-asses), and keeping the egg white (the developers). I wish that was it works, anyway.

If only :(

I follow the Shining Force Central religiously. Playing Shining Force Scenario 2 and 3 in English was something I anticipated with bated breath.

Shining force 3 while I good game was not in my top ten, but I still loved the series. I am so glad I waited and bought a Japanese copy for cheap because Scenario 3 is in my top 3 favorite games of all time.

It was a big deal in Shining Force Central all sorts of interviews hinting at talk from Camelot, to the Camelot wiki having an Camelot shining game on wii, to Sega doing polls seeing how many people would want shining force to return on wii.

Then shortly after, Camelot said they were denied it and Sega would continue the series internally. So it's really all rumors, but if you read shining force central bits and pieces are everywhere on their boards, to many things basically prove it was in very early stages.

A lot of the original sources are hard to come by, this is a while back. Even the wiki has been changed after the denied statement from Camelot. So... *shrug*

What I really don't understand is why ask if you would want a Shining Force 3 on the Wii only to make a non-wii title in the first place. It just doesn't make any sense.

As shitty as it sounds this is what SEGA needs to do. Shenmue HD is still possible since it would be a XBLA/PSN release. They can't take chances anymore because people aren't buying.

They are just not releasing what people want. They do polls asking people what game they want revived, then revive the number 3 game. 1 and 2 both could have 3x the votes, but are never released. I don't know why they even bothered having such polls honestly.

So was there ever any confirmation that SEGA was considering working with Camelot again? Rumors don't count, even if SFC made a big fuss over it.

I mean: I agree with you that the idea of SEGA executives acting like stuck-up sissies and not giving Shining fans what they've wanted for years is silly-dilly. But I kindly asked for a reputable source and confirmation. That's all I want to see.

Yousuke Okunari needs to become the head of affairs over at SEGA. He has the right idea, which is to rebuild a reputation amongst gamers with digital ports of old classics. It'll certainly be a start, after so many years of ignoring and then pissing off numerous SEGA fanbases.

I don't know if I can find a quote from the Camelot interview that said they started working on a Shining project for a wii. >.> I know it exists because I was furious.

I find it crazy that Sega's biggest IP's outside of Sonic are PC exclusive games. Then again, the Total War and Football Manager games are consistently high quality games that offer something no other games really try.

If Anihawk is to be believed, they also cancelled Skies of Arcadia sequel for Wii.

I really think Monkey Ball would be a lot of fun on Wii U.

And Sonic....this might be the best thing to happen to the franchise.

"So a new Shining Force and Golden Sun; if Sega allows it and Camelot gets around to it. At least it seems like the relationship between Nintendo and Camelot is not as strained as some may have thought."

"We talked a little bit before about wanting to create some sequels to some of our older games. If you look at some of our older games, like Shining Force, those are fairly dark games. "

There is an old wiki page showing: Camelot as sloted to make an RPG (unknown atm) for the Wii, which is when Sega, Nintendo, and Camelot were all hinting at shining force 3 or 4 on wii. Sega with there poll, Nintendo with there we would like a more mature RPGS, Camelot saying we want to do another Shining Force game and get back into more complex games. Unfortunately all I can find are forum posts anymore. *sigh* Still to many for me to brush it off as a coincidence.

NOOOOOOO!!!

So now I need to kiss another Valkyria Chronicles for the PS3 or ANY CONSOLE goodbye?????

;_;

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :(

Valkyria Chronicles is one of the best games in this generation and it sold nicely on the PS3, they build a nice fanbase for it on the system then they throw it away from the window :(

SEGA... really didn't deserve to end up like this.....

Off topic but is Valkyria Chronicles really that good?

I hate FPS games. I don't know why, but I've never enjoyed any game in first person. I heard it was a hybrid so I never bothered. How much of it is actually FP? I couldn't get into Shining The Holy Ark that much because of the first person. It bothered me.

Alright, this makes more sense now. That's...wow, I wish I could subject SEGA's corporate leadership to the same torture their own fans have to deal with, because this is revolting to read.

Valkyria Chronicles is barely an FPS, if that's what you're wondering. It's an excellent homage to Skies of Arcadia, and an amazing SRPG in its own right. Joe Bob sez check it out!

It's not a first-person game. And it is really that good.

IMO it's the best game SEGA made since the Dreamcast era.

You must play the demo from the PSN Store to really get how the game feels and plays... but anyway here a sample from it:

I didn't care for it, but it's certainly different than everything else and is worth playing. I don't think it's really that good, but it is really that interesting, and it's easy to see why other people like it.
