Don't say stuff you wouldn't say in real life to a group of people. If you'd look like an assclown it's probably not something to post.

*looks like an idiot anyway*

stay out of any threads discussing women, the white knight is will be watching.

Also there are women in there. We exist!

I've somehow survived 8 years with only 3 bans.

As mentioned, don't be an idiot.

Before you hit the 'Submit Reply' button, think again about what you are saying.

Don't make stupid puns in threads where people have died or suffered some terrible disability or other fate.

Stay far, and I mean FAR, the fuck away from political threads. Especially if you are a conservative. You will get eaten alive as most of this board is liberal, or at least, the most vocal posters in the poli-threads are all liberal.

Try to avoid posting in threads about alternative lifestyles - transgendered threads, gay-gaf threads, etc., unless you have direct knowledge, or are very familiar with the lifestyles, trends, and the things that offend. Chances are you will end up spouting off something from a position of ignorance, even if you have no meaning to offend.

Console fanboyism - this takes some time to understand the nuance of when and what is ok to post when you want to knock a company or console that is not your system of choice. You can avoid the banhammer and get your shots in at your console enemies, but there is a fine art to learning how and when to do it. This only comes with time and much careful observation. If you're a junior, you're committing account suicide by jumping into the console wars and waving your big Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo Flag.

Don't make controversial posts unless you know you can get away with it. Don't get involved in arguments that last more than five posts, each poster.

1) Being gay or transgendered isn't a lifestyle
2) Transgaf welcomes people who are curious as long as they're willing to learn and have an open mind. I haven't really seen any straight people in gay gaf so I don't know how it's generally handled there but I assume it's the same.

Don't tell the men in the "post a picture of yourself" thread that they are ugly, and don't tell the women that they look good. The former makes you a jerk, the latter makes you a creep.

This duel is far from over.

Can we use the Q word?

Is that the word used on South Park?

my cake, fuck off
Think before posting. I wanted to post a picture of Mickey Rooney from Breakfast at Tiffany's in the Audrey Hepburn thread. I thought about it, then posted a pic of Paris Hilton instead. Not sure if I would have been banned, but not taking any chances.

you're not onto anything. i post on the gaming side. this is over, i'm sick of antagonizing you.

You started it, you wouldn't leave me alone and frankly we've got unfinished business. And not the kind with briefcases.

I don't think you realize how dangerous this feud has become.

Your move.

How would that get you banned?

Don't [go] making any sexist or racist jokes against white males.

My advice is to make your point and move on. It's pretty rare that you see someone change their position on a subject. So it's pointless to browbeat them with your ideas in an attempt to do just that.

get some go again
i think i've only been banned once so whatever i'm doing its working. i once tried getting banned at ign and posted porn and instead it just got edited out. -_-

I usually get banned about once/ish per year and it's always from simply not thinking before I post and that is usually from lack of sleep or ignorance.

I simply forgot to pay for my silver account last month

Why post on fucking NeoGAF when you can go get this glorious bitch and eat it. It's so amazing. I wish my Mickey D's was open but nope, its not.

As long as a poster boards their absolute hardest, then I see no real reason as to why they should be banned. Make meaningful content that others want to consume while consuming the content you enjoy. It's as simple as that.

To summarize: YOLO

2. Gaming side is a minefield but can be fun if you know what you're doing. It's probably best for you to stick to topics that you're familiar with, games you intend on playing, or systems/games you already own. If you enter a topic outside of your familiarity, refer back to #1.

3. Memes are best avoided. Enjoy them while they last and laugh all you want, but they're all eventually banned.

4. Off-Topic is a more relaxed atmosphere but can be dangerous if you suck at posting. In a weird paradox, OT has fewer stupid posters which makes it easier for mods to patrol the area. A good rule of thumb is to post to threads you like. Basically, don't troll and don't go into topics you're not interested in.

5. Challenge Mods at your own risk. Some of them are fantastic at the back-and-forth debate while others leave zero room for discussion. The best strategy is to be respectful of all of them at all times, regardless of their current behavior. Everything they post is an opinion but should be treated like a fact that only the boldest and most confident posters with evidence should challenge. In any situation where their behavior is being questioned, they are correct and the topic should be avoided.

6. No matter the topic, if you make a blanket statement--especially criticism--back it up with evidence. You won't always get banned for not doing so, but it's always a good practice and will go a long way towards building your recognition and respect.

7. If you want a tag, join and become a regular contributor to one of the -ages. It can take a long time and usually requires some memorable contribution. Remember though, there's a hairline difference between a tag and a permaban, so be careful. Best bets for tags are Sales-Age, PC-Age, AV-Age, SportsGAF, PoliGAF. Most of the time they're given for being stupid, so it's not some mark of glory but usually a mark of shame. Some can be a source of pride, though.

8. Don't be dumb when starting a new thread. Search before you post! If it's news and happened more than 30 minutes ago, it's probably old. If it's sales-age, you or the source are probably misinterpreting the evidence. If it's girl-age, you're probably going to be embarrassed. If it's PoliGAF, you're probably going to show how little you know. If it's about your culture, religion, country, language, philosophy, or any preference, be prepared to defend your beliefs. If it's about sports, there's four sticky threads at the top of the OT that probably covers it. And whatever you do, don't start a thread with a link with a comment that says, "discuss." If you have nothing to say about the topic, don't post it.

9. Correct people's grammar/spelling at your own risk. Not only did you probably make a similar typo on the exact same page, but we have many foreign and non-native English speakers here on GAF, so you're probably just making an ass out of yourself.

10. Last piece of advice: Treat people like they're in the same room with you. If you wouldn't say it to somebody's face, it's a 50/50 chance that you're saying something offensive and bannable. Other than that, it's just a good policy for approaching internet discussion and culture.

Other things to remember:
Read the FAQs; don't ask for tags; make sure your avatar is the right size and completely work safe; never post NSFW stuff; never talk about, ask about, or refer to piracy; no console-wars bullshit; don't be a bigot (racist, sexist, classist, et al); rants are fun but dangerous and often embarassing; be nice and don't be stupid.

Note from the author:
It's taken some years and several bans to learn all of these unwritten rules, and there's probably some that still need to be added. It's possible that one could follow this and still be banned, but this should be a handy guide that will assist you in your junior journey.
