Halo 4 - mandatory 8GB install for MP

This. Didn't they do this for ODST already? Or is there some decompression that needs to be done with Halo 4 MP content?

ODST was ODST on one disc and Halo 3 on the other that only had the MP maps.

Making a playable second disc would essentially require

a) making two games

b) 343 to actually give a shit about LAN

since Microsoft cheaped out on Anniversary and made it only one disc, and the Reach Title Update threw LAN under the bus, you're going to get your second disc as an installer only and like it.

Every PS2 game required a memory card

No, it didn't, and neither do all Vita games and so on. Regardless, the point is no company will do that for you, it's not like this is the first game with such requirements.

You don't find it unfortunate that a percentage of the people purchasing Halo 4 won't be able to play its online multiplayer without having to go out and get a memory card?

Not at all. Frankly, I don't think there will be many affected, 8+ GB flash drives are not that uncommon in people's households nowadays.

Is there any games other than Reach/mmos that require a large amount of storage to play multiplayer?

Microsoft should include some type of program where if a user is connected to Xbox live and runs Halo 4 without a hard drive/memory stick, then they can sign up to have one shipped to them.

What other 360 games lock you out of multiplayer if you have 4GB of storage or less?

Seems totally reasonable. It would be good if this can be communicated with a sticker on the box, just because it would be frustrating for some players. If it makes for a faster and more seamless experience for players it's a smart move.

So, it's completely unplayable on some models, unless you buy additional hardware. Consoles are losing their easy of use advantage over PCs more and more these days.

I like news such as this. It tells me the devs refuse to conform with the limitations of the platform. Those who have the space will benefit with a better playing experience.

This far through the generation, it is to be expected. 4GB users should be upgrading if they actually want to use XBL seriously. Again, this close to next-gen, it might be a bit pointless.

Unlike the PS3 this is one of the few times an Xbox game requires an install so I'm okay with this. To be honest anyone who take their gaming a little more seriously (I.E People reading about games on a forum) I kind of expect you to own a decent sized hard drive anyway.

HDMI cables aren't that rare either but people still complain about them.

If you can't play the game out of the box it's a problem. Some people can't play the game out of the box. It's a problem.

They'd do well to create some sort of bundle with a memory stick, but thats a really big fucking install.

Is this for downloading other additional maps or the entire multiplayer? I haven't paid much attention to my 360 for a while so am not sure what this is to allow.

I don't understand why a console needs this, am still shocked when I hear of the mandatory installs on the PS3. Surely this is what there suppose to NOT do compared to a PC?

Is this game just poorly optimised for the 360 or what?

I wouldn't be surprised if games move back to cards and drop the disc format next gen; with strong downloadable options ofc for the hard drive if you so wish.

That sucks for people with low space (20gb or 4gb), but at least 343 seems to not be compromising the game for the hardware. Combined with the disc install and future dlc, this will be a lot of space used, but aside from that minority most wont mind.

Good.

If you have to buy more hardware then boohoo.

I'd rather have that than a dev cutting off their own vision because of limitations like not everyone having a big enough hard drive.

The text is a little bit unspecific, although it says you'll need an 8gb USB stick, it doesn't specify the space required from a Hard Drive, only that a Hard Drive is needed. I can't see them forcing an install, but more so just the way Halo's always been in that it does alot of caching on the drive in the background.

bish gets all the credit :)
This is good news for people that have the space, as it would theoretically improve load times for everyone. Sucks for those 4GB people.

My guess would be that there is a lot of data that is compressed on the disc, and the install uncompresses it to make it useful for the end-user. It's not bad optimization or anything like that, it's jsut pure limitations of the current system and the wish to stay away from three or more discs.

As games get more demanding, there needs to be a compromise, nd this is it in for Halo 4.

WOW that's just nuts as a mandatory install.
One of the reason's people like 360 so much is because they don't have to deal with that.
Nothing kills the mood quicker than being forced to install a game.

EDIT: Yes I know it's only for the MP, but let's be honest everyone is going to at least dabble once into it.

Well if anything it's nearing the end of the generation, and cases like this seem pretty rare on the 360.

More and more people are getting use to installing games, just to save on disc wear and noise levels. I hope this becomes an option for next-gen, despite disc capacity getting a large boost.

Honestly, it's nearing the end of this console cycle, and if people still don't have SOME kind of extra storage for the 360, then that's too damn bad. Developers need to squeeze every ounce of juice out of this console, and I'd rather them just make it mandatory than have some sort of strange compromise for it. Sorry to those that this hurts, but that's just my opinion.

Yeah, I install almost every single game I have, if I'm currently going to be playing it. Saves on load times, disc wear, and noise levels. Win-win, imo. It only takes about 10 minutes per disc - which is usually when I opt to grab a bite to eat.

I'm okay with this! In fact, I hope multiplayer is a download code so I don't need to swap disks.

I'm such a fiendishly evil consumer.

I'm honestly surprised MS didn't require a special Xbox 360 USB stick for the console. I mean, they made everything else proprietary, why not the USB sticks?

If you still have a 20G Xbox after all these years I'm sure it would be incredibly cheap to get a used larger HD or USB flash drive.

People are complaining about having to upgrade just for multiplayer for a game they are going to drop $60 down for. Memory upgrade is just a fraction of that and it will benefit you for other games too.

Nah, I only play consoles for exclusives now anyway. So I will just uninstall whatever is on there atm, most likely GOW3 which I haven't played since it's initial release.

I'm still on a 20GB HDD and I absolutely refuse to pay the ridiculous prices that MS charge for its HDDs. And yes, the HDD space limitation has stopped me from buying DLCs and other online content before.

*Newsflash* Xbox for some time has supported external USB flash drives. Reasonable pricing with no money going to Microsoft.

i'm sure those people can afford a 16GB USB stick.

Honestly I don't it's going to effect that many people to begin with. Anyone that much into gaming is likely to have the storage space by now.

FFXI is one of them. =p

This is as bad as all those vita games requiring memory cards in order to play them. SMH.

Is it wrong that I rather developers do things like this instead holding the game back for the few without the storage space?
