Max Payne 3 |OT| Funny as hell, we couldn't decide on a sub-title

So strange. The NY levels have such a clear jump in fun it validates everything the naysayers were saying about Brazil.

And favela levels have always been boring in every game. Lowest point of Modern Warfare 2. Branco's office, something similar to the Aesir building was an obvious highpoint. It's impossible to get excited about favela gangs. People born into poverty and violence with low-end guns and no training. No complex schemes or conspiracies. Just crude application of force in the name of money or drugs. Skin deep.

I thought the Jersey levels were the most boring.

I'm wasting so much time on my Hard playthrough just restarting random shootouts to get the perfect + most stylish line. Bullet time runs out so quickly that I'm not sure how anyone went through hard without abusing shootdodge (which you don't need any meter for). I'm afraid to even play any other shooter knowing that it won't be even a tenth as satisfying as this one.

Just finished the game on PC a couple of days ago. Got furious about a couple of stupid things:

Damn game having to be run as administrator in some random compatibility mode.
Accidentally running myself out of pistol ammo before a QTE event at the end where it was REQUIRED and having to stare at a cutscene loop where you die until the game finally takes pity on you and throws you a bone. Run up the boarding ladder, dive, die in slo mo loop for like half an hour... Damn near throw controller...

Other than that, the game was a hell of a lot of fun. Lots of interesting scenarios and great physics simulations.

I love that squint he does after he reads the newspaper and after taking a shot before leaving the house. Reminds me a lot of Constipated Payne.

Just finished it last night and absolutely LOVED it. It felt kinda like a Tarantino movie mixed with some Call of Duty style set peices. I'm probably in the minority when I say the cutscenes were the highlight of the game for me. I enjoyed the combat a lot, but I was finding myself at times rushing through them just to get to the next cutscene! I've played games that were trying to create a cinema style experience, but this knocks it out the park. I feel like I can explain this to someone who doesn't play games without the confused, lost expression I tend to get.

Also that YouTube video is spot fucking ON.

Cutscenes aren't as bad on your first playthrough

If you play it again you won't be so interested in them.

Nice to see you enjoyed the game.

Got this on the Amazon sale. First impression: Dialogue/writing doesn't sound remotely like Max Payne. Like, at all. I knew going in this wasn't Max Payne as we knew it, but I thought the feel of dialogue would at least be reminiscent. He sounds like a different person.

But yeah, that's just the first minute lol. Playing more now.

He does sound different at first but it's just Max is so much older and tried to move past his wife and kids death but just cant. He is so miserable he wants to die.

This is likely my final impressions of the game, copy pasted from the amazon thread:

I already regret buying max payne 3. I was very critical of the PS3 version but figured the PC version would have been a better fit for me since that's how i played MP1/MP2.

That's just not the case, i simply do not like this game. Max controls like he's moving in molasses, checkpoints are waaaaay too few and far between, the gunplay is not as satisfying as 2 and the worst... the cutscenes. The ENORMOUS amount of game disrupting cutcenes. I could go on and on but it's not worth my time.
The game does look great it and runs smoothly on my machine. So there's that.

It's been said before and i'll just repeat it. Max payne 3 feels like a rockstar game, not a max payne game.
Slightly offtopic, i thoroughly enjoyed alan wake and played through it in about a day. I guess that makes me a remedy fanboy?

If it were console game i would be trading it in for whatever i could get for it.

Finished today on PC. Finished yesterday on PS3. Easily one of my top 10 favorite games all time. Spent today playing MP, Arcade, and Time Attack. Got into such a zone, some poor soul just accused me of hacking. Truly a testosterone laden action fest that grips your gunplay DNA and never lets go.

Jesus, I'm not one to use the word "entitled" much, but it's the perfect way to describe a lot of GTA fanboys. Assholes are just spamming Max Payne vids, complaining about a lack of new info about GTA. Incredibly annoying.

I thought you liked the multiplayer.

Dude I love the multiplayer.. I didn't go to lvl 40 for nothing bro!

I just can't play it anymore because the connection issues are so goddamn horrible. Plus there were like 30 people playing deathmatch on Ps3 free aim last time. Yeah that game is not going to last for another month.

Pff should have released this shit for free as a gift to the users who have continued to play this broken ass multiplayer.
I just got them for free from Best Buy. However, I prefer the pc version more because I can always find people to play with in free aim mode. Hrmmmm, decisions.

Sucks, no major connections issue here, but my xbox acted like it was broken for awhile (pretended like it had no wireless adapter).

The cemetery map is cool too - guys with the Rockstar pass get it free. Just like with the other maps, this is another single player area (Ch. 8). Awesome!

I think I'd be very happy if they ever gave us a Ch. 11 map.

I'm pretty sad they split up all the playlists and didn't make free aim the default option. On Ps3 it's really bad for me with the connection issues I had to quit in order to avoid a brain aneurism. I mean getting nr 1 in a game and getting kicked out 2 minutes before the end of the match was doing me in.

I'm part of the problem. I go 1-14, 2-20 when playing free aim, but I have a blast playing soft lock. =(

Free aim takes getting used to, but it's great fun once you've gotten the hang of it. Decided to get the R* Pass, the DLC looks great. Though the amount of people playing is very low, hopefully there'll still be a small, dedicated community. Kinda depressing to see that Neogang is pretty much dead right now. Before this came out, I was playing Red Dead, and there's still a shitload of people playing it on PS3.

Sorry I might be late on this but.....The commerical song for MP3 is catchy as hell so easy to listen to on repeat.

Im waiting for this to go down a bit in price, I like it but not enough to buy right now, especially with my cheap salary lol.

Anyone got the DLC? The new maps are fucking great, just hope the community doesn't die out quickly.

The new maps are downright INCREDIBLE, if only for the novelty of playing in maps directly modeled after Chapters 12, 13, and 14. And those with a Rockstar Pass got a bonus map for free, Cemetery, modeled after Ch. 8!

Also, on July 6th there will be a double exp event! I'll use that to ease the slow grind to level 50.

I want to buy the Season Pass....for the PC version. Eff these delayed releases for PC games. Tempted to buy the season pass for my ps3 version. I guess that is why they do it.

Finally bought, played and finished this.

- Loved the story and how it is presented. Sure, Passos ain't no Sully but in the end this is the story of Max Payne and Max Payne alone. The cynical inner monologue is great, often funny in it's depravity.
- The narrative transitioning is amazingly effective, I had a hard time stop playing when everything progressed so smoothly, and with such style! Naughty Dog really could learn a few things from this.
- Free aim turned out to be the right choice. Really forces you to utilize bullet time.
- Dying a lot wasn't that bad. For some reason I actually didn't mind replaying some bits, on the contrary, I enjoyed it. Feels like the exact opposite of Uncharted 3 where any frustration made me climb the walls in frustration. I'm guessing this is because of bullet time.
- The game impresses more in it's quieter parts, or smaller skirmishes. The super action heavy segments felt a little off in an otherwise "realistic" setting.
Ending went a little too overboard for my taste
. Wish they could have found some sort of middle ground - bigger explosions doesn't always make things better.
- The HEALTH-soundtrack is just something else. And Rockstar's use of licensed music is always fitting.
The Emicida-rap when entering the favela really set the tone.
.
- The details! Everything from character movement to enviroment to the fact that Max can't understand portuguese. It's just too many of the little things to mention.

Without a doubt game of the year for me. It's like a vacation filled with social injustice, violence and pure evil.

EDIT: How's the multiplayer in this? Community still active? Thinking of renewing my gold subscription for at least a month to try it out...

Ugh, it can't be overstated how much the cutscenes suck on repeat playthroughs. The gameplay in this lends itself perfectly to quick sessions due to the fast, brutal nature, but the game is set up in a way which makes that impossible. All the small cutscenes, of which you can skip like half, are annoying, and any cutscene longer than 20 seconds is near unskippable until right before it ends, or not at all. This is by far my biggest issue with the game above all else. I just want to jump into Arcade mode and shoot fools up, but I'm sitting here watching Max and Passos talk all day long in between rooms. SHUT UP. And being on 2 discs on 360 is really bad for when you just want to jump around to random levels in Arcade mode. I think I'm putting this down until I double dip for PC and can skip all this fluff.

Yeah, I came back to this today after not really touching the game since the week it came out. Gameplay is still so delicious, but the cutscenes are unfortunate when revisiting the single-player.

I'm reminded of how much I enjoy the writing, though. The dialogue specifically. I know a lot of GAF isn't really into Rockstar's/Dan Houser's writing, but I fucking love it. Sounds so much more believable than most other games (of course, that's thanks in no small part to some quality voice acting).

I really enjoy this portrayal of Max. He isn't as poetic as Sam Lake's version, but he's still really humorously dry and very down to earth, especially in the back and forth dialogue with Passos, who also a really good character.

I really want to get the season pass for PS3 but I'm afraid no one else will have the maps. :(

Anyone playing the new DLC on PS3?

DLC map got a separate playlist, you won't have a problem to find players. Checking the number of players in that playllist makes me :( though.

Bad thing is that the playlist is TMD only currently, if your fav mode is something else, you should wait.

I played the Payne mode on that list. I think they are mixing it up (ps3).
