PlayStation All-Stars joined by Heihachi and Toro

Didn't give a shit about this game since I can't stand smash but gave it a go and it's super solid. I don't even like the roster.

Heihachi is making me buy it but it plays super solid. This is said from someone who thought anything like smash sucks.

What did the other fighting game fans think of the game? How well is it received on the Evo floor?

I actually think Team battles will be handled much better in this game then in Smash due to the style of KO and the variety of playstyles. I could see a long ranged character and a tank esque character working together better in this one.

Lightning - maybe if they can't get Cloud, they can get female Cloud

Wouldn't Yuna make more sense by now? I think TGS would be a perfect opportunity to announce her inclusion, maybe even show some footage from FFX HD from SE's side. I suppose that would boost sales in Japan pretty much.

Also, lol @ Kuma

And on the sixth day the LORD David Bowie created man and woman in His image. And he saw that it was good. On the seventh day the LORD created videogames so that He might take the bloody day off for once.
Now this is the type of bombastic presentation I'd want to see for the in-game menus:

With a few tweaks, I could easily imagine something like this being used as the basis for a character select screen.

From my view most people like it a lot. The real shit that is truly impressive live was Injustice. Super solid.

Thanks, and yeah Injustice seems like a riot to watch.

Sorry for shit quality image but I agree, this is one of the few things DON got right:

The current character select screen is lame trash.

I think the biggest gripe about the graphics is that they clash. Nintendo's IPs all look cartoony so it can get away with it, whereas Sony's IPs each have a unique art style. Nathan Drake, for example, does look too awkward and so does Radek and Kratos. They are too realistic looking in comparison with all the other characters.

But I'll still pick this game up since it looks amazing.

Summoner Yuna or Dress Sphere Yuna? The latter would probably actually work better for a fighting game.

Yea I agree, that character select screen is pretty bad actually. But usually the graphic design portions of games are the last things to be completed. Hopefully it's still being worked on!

In Toro's move set I think one of his supers.

Also I can see why some people would compare it to smash bros but in the end it honestly at a pure gameplay level doesnt really seem like a copy. It looks more combo crazy and not so heavy

Honestly I think the reason everyone is not feeling the gameplay so far is because they've done nothing but show the regular "time battle" mode and just get as many kills as you can. This looks like the type of game that once you make it a stock match, it would get very intense and the wholse system of AP gain/denial would factor heavily. That's why I'm not too worried about what I'm seeing.

As for the graphics, it's a Smash type fighting game with distinctive art-styles. I think they've managed to do a good job especially with the way they are meshing the franchises together with the stages. Can't wait for the Playstation Bus to come so I can try this beast out for myself.

Really? I don't feel like the art styles are meshing in this at all. And certainly nowhere near as well as they do in Smash, despite the two being pretty similar in terms of the sheer diversity of art styles at play at once. Both even have a "2D" fighter in the mix, yet Smash somehow makes it looks more cohesive. Maybe it's because Smash lays some of its own style on top of the characters themselves, giving them a look unique to that game only (like how Snake is sort of an amalgamation of Snake's multiple looks from a few different games rather than just being a model lifted straight from one of his games)? Don't know.

I don't know, something about this game's look just really bugs me. I dig the concept well enough, and I'm really curious to see what other third party characters make the cut, but something always looks "off," both in appearance and in gameplay, every time I actually see it.

Maybe it works better when you're actually playing it. I'm still not passing any judgment on it. And as much as I generally dislike Cloud, Cloud HAS to be in this. It would be like doing a Marvel vs. Capcom game without Mega Man...

...right?

Kind of underwhelmed with Heihachi making it in to be honest - I really want to see Superbot reserve third-party slots for the triple-A characterss that everyone's demanding, but they haven't turned up yet. At least we know Snake is on the way. Heihachi is a B-lister, and Tekken isn't the behemoth franchise it once was. Still, his level 3 super was funny at least, and it's cool that I recognise so many of his moves back from my days playing Tekken 2 and 3 relentlessly.

Toro on the other hand, that just worked out better than I could've hoped for. His quirky move set looks like he's going to be a hilarious character to use. Really glad to see him in.

Chop Chop Onion Master's Dojo being used as a stage is a masterstroke too. Think I called that months back.

2 out of 3 - that ain't bad.

Tekken was one of the biggest, most important franchises on PS1. Its hard to get excited about a character who has been in so many fighting games already, but Tekken deserves a spot

I don't know about that.

The 40-odd characters that have appeared in the SSB series come from around a dozen or so franchises. And I'd say several of those have "cartoony" artstyles e.g. Mario-Kirby-Pokemon.

The 10 characters announced so far for PSABR come from 10 franchises.

My neighbor,
I'd personally be far more excited for Totoro in this game...

Man, this game looks like it's just barely, barely on the edge of being awesome, but there's soooooooo many little things and a couple of big things that kind of kill my hopes right now.

The lack of visual consistency is pretty bad. I think this is the thing that makes the game look the worst out of anything so far. Characters have very inconsistent lighting and visual styles, making the game feel visually very chaotic. Not in a good way, but in a MUGEN-y way. It feels like there's no art direction. I understand the intent to keep character styles similar to the source material, but it just doesn't look cohesive. It makes the world feel bland.

The color choices and lighting (oh god the lighting) aren't too good. It's a very bland looking game. Dull, washy colors are terrible for competitive games (less contrast = harder to see things. Harder to see things = harder to learn the game, understand why your losing = more frustrating experience). This can get especially bad in certain stages. The hydra stage during rain is this problem multiplied a thousandfold.

The UI and the design choice to withhold basic and vital information in a competitive game honestly just baffles me. I again, understand the intent here, but I genuinely think this is bad on so many levels. I don't think this was ever a problem in Smash Bros, ever. People knew someone was winning through the entire series and this definitely didn't harm low level play. The mechanics change doesn't really change the context that would justify this either. It just makes it harder to observe and understand the game. When you kill a dude, a point goes up. That's a satisfying thing. It really is. Seeing a number pop up when you do a positive action is a very, very, very, very good thing that makes games feel more fun.

The Level 1/2 super UI is impossible to discern quickly. Same color, using a slightly faster flashing light, the UI elements are the same size. Pretty much nothing gives you this information in a quick and meaningful way. It looks utterly difficult to tell what kind of super someone has in a game where you have to focus on multiple people.

The particle effects are loud. Intrusively so. They block character visuals sometimes. Probably not the worst issue, but could be subdued here.

The sound on hits is papery and thin. Some moves sound like they have no impact at all. Heihachi hitting a dude doesn't sound fun. When you punch a person, the sound, visual effect, the hitstun, they all add up to make hits feel awesome. I don't see that. The hitstun looks super super short, the particles are fine, and the sound is reminiscent of a dude throwing a paper ball, not this huge martial artist punching someone else and then exaggerated for effect and power.

I mean like, there's so many GOOD things about the game from the looks of it (being able to turn any stage into Final Destination, the super mechanic is really well thought out and solves tons of problems...) I like that there's more normals on a single button instead of tilts (god I hated tilt normals in Smash). Like, everything about the combat design sounds really smart, and then the actual design that makes things just make the game feel really fun and satisfying aren't present. This game launches in a few months.

I don't wanna be a negative nancy, but yeah...

Please Superbot. You've got my hopes and dreams on the line. Don't fail me on such basic things that are consistent throughout almost every popular competitive game...

Edit: This is coming from a person who's done design on competitive games before and played competitive fighting games at a high level :/

Editx2: Another huge problem. One thing that felt amazing in Smash was knocking someone off the stage. It was a very visceral thing. Loud sound effect, good particle that's very obvious, I think the only time the game had a screen shake. Usually the act of knocking someone off a stage had a really really impactful hit to go along with it. Very fast movement associated with a lot of force behind the blow, and the sound effect on hitting someone with a move that usually KOed people in Smash was SUPER satisfying. IN this game, everytime I see someone get killed I barely notice it.
Well said.

I'm still looking for a good write up from SRK or here about how it plays.

Fair enough, but as you said, important back in the days of the first Playstation. Not so much now. It's just a bit frustrating when everyone is screaming out for the usual suspects like Snake, Cloud, Crash, Spyro, Lara and Sora, and instead we get someone who wasn't really on anyone's wishlist. At least Heihachi has a decent affiliation with the Playstation brand, as opposed to Big Daddy.

Has the rule set been released for this game yet? How do you play it exactly?

Three attack buttons. Like Smash, attacks change based on the direction you hold.

Beat up other dudes to build up your Super meter up to three levels. Hit them with your Super to score kills. It's the only way to get kills, as there is no health bar.

There will be another panel tonight at Evo:

We also invite you to join us for our panel presentation on Saturday, July 7th at 2:00 p.m. (pacific) Straight from the developer, Superbot Entertainment, Omar Kendall, Paul Edwards, Tommy Ho, Artavan Mkhikian, Edward Ma, and Daniel Maniago (that’s me!) will be discussing the finer points of the game engine as well as answering fan questions.

I don't know if it'll be streamed though.

If ratchet isn't reviled next I'm going to do something stupid out of anger. Real talk

Heh. I really want to see Ratchet too, but I can wait since he's obviously in.

But if by some cruel twist of fate he doesn't get in, I will be raging like never before.

Yeah this one is ridiculous.

Remembering everyone's score because the game refuses to display it is not a good "skill" to emphasize in a fighting game. It's horrible for both spectators and players.

It's not a game of hidden information. The information is there - you just have to remember it.

Not displaying the score in a competitive score-based game is just beyond weird. (I assume there will be a way to make the score visible, and everyone will do that...)

The messaging here is also very strange. The game has "real" fighting game players working on it and is supposed to be more competitive than Smash, yet includes stuff like this which exists...I guess so that newbs can have fun mashing and not feel bad because they are losing? I struggle to understand the reasoning behind it at all.
