I still have my Criterion Collection Laserdisc. It has awesome packaging:

Here are some low quality images I found that don't really do it justice:

I should probably see this in Blu-ray.

Also, I can't recommend the soundtrack enough, especially the track "Exodus From The Underground Fortress".

I didn't get it.

Tetsuo ultimately became a god and created a new universe... I think.

The comic kicks ass too in a different way.

This. The comic is great, the plot is basically the same but they get in to the character's a lot more. Tetsuo is a good deal more interesting in the comic as a drug crazed gang leader. The movie is also awesome and it's probably the best that could've been done taking the Akira story and condensing it into one movie.

I like the comic a bit more, especially because of the amazingly detailed destroyed city drawings, but both are great.

Why hasn't there been any new good anime moves...

There have been. Arietty is recent, that was good.

Loved it way back when, watching it again I didn't enjoy it as much. Still great because of the theme music and hand drawn animation charm.

I'm one of those "the manga is much better" guys, but I probably should watch this again.

how is the bluray quality?

Let me go on record as saying I still have a mixed feeling about the film, even though I own two copies of it. Overall, I still find the narrative a bit confusing and the tone overly depressing. However, the real reason to watch Akira is for the insane animation and soundtrack. All 160,000+ frames are filled with Otomo's industrial design fetish. I don't think anyone can deny the movie was a groundbreaking moment in animation history.

The movie was gorgeous but the manga was so much better. Really I haven't seen such incredible pacing in most of what I read manga/fiction/non-fiction not withstanding. But then it all fell apart at the end. It's a shame.

Im a little indifferent towards the movie.

the ending makes absolutely no sense in any way whatsoever.

I think it's highly overrated because of the visuals. It seems to me for a lot of people it was their first exposure to anime so thought it was great because they had never seen anything like it before rather than it being good anime.

Nonsense, Akira holds up really well even today, visually and story wise, there is a lot of animes with good visual who will not stand the test of time like Akira did.

I'll still go back and watch my Akira DVD just for the animation/art quality. Like others here, it was one of the first pieces of anime I had watched, and it left an amazing impression.

The only bad part is that it left a very high expectation for me for what to expect from animes. They just don't make them like that anymore. Sure there was Ghost in the Shell for extremely high animation and art design but that was 1996. Big fan of Patlabor 2 as well, but again, that was 1993. I always snoop around for new anime features to see if anything strikes my eye in the same way but it never happens. I did really enjoyed the 2001 Metropolis anime though in sort of the same way, although I wasn't too crazy about the art style.

I'd mention Studio Ghibli movies but they are on a different level in my opinion. Japanese Disney. I own most of those.

With that said there seems to be plenty of quality anime series these days. Just not feature films. People have pointed me to some that they like but for me personally, as a fringe anime fan, there's really not much.

I have it on Blu-Ray and after all these years after originally seeing it, I love it and hate it. Love the movie because the animation is still amazing after all these years and I still have yet to see a soundtrack to an anime that came close to topping Akira's (maybe GiTS 2 or FLCL).

Why do I hate it? The movie ends at Volume 3 of the original manga and cuts it off while you still have so much more of the story to tell. I understand that they couldn't fit the entire story into the movie but there could have been a Pt. 2 or something to finish it. It was so disappointing as a kid to read the manga and watch the anime only to have it cut off where it did. I know it's a petty argument but that still bothers me to this day.

I still have the Special Edition DVD that came in the tin case from awhile back. Only problem is the dub is awful. I remember the original Streamline (?) release on VHS being much better, but maybe because I was so used to it.

What bothers me about the newer English dub, is that they speak English but then try to use the Japanese name pronunciations. While that's technically more accurate, the entire point of translating something into another language is to make it fit the language. "Ah-kee-rah" sounds strange in English while "uh-kee-ruh" sounds correct.

The same can be said for the reverse. My name in its native English is pronounced "kris" but Japanese pronounce it "kurisu". It wouldn't bother me if something I made got dubbed into Japanese and they used "kurisu" because that sounds more natural to them.

Hmm, I'll have to check out Steamboy. I watched Memories though and didn't like it at all. Might take a peak at the others you suggested as well.

If you own the black tin DVD release, then you should have both versions. There is a choice in the language menu to choose between the 1989 Streamline dub and the 2001 Animaze dub. Unfortunately, according to Wikipedia, the Blu-ray only has the newer 2001 dub.

It's too bad they couldn't get the Streamline version. Hell..they never released Robot Carnival on DVD :\

Welcome to 1988 OP. I didn't think there were still people completely unexposed to this movie. This is basically how most people of my generation who are into anime got pulled into anime in the first place.

Jesus, I was nine or 10 or something when I saw this movie in the late 90's with no idea what to expect. Like pretty much everyone, it completely shattered my expectations of what was possible in animation.

Reading questions on what to watch next is like encountering a brand new anime fan all over again. Man.

Explain Akiras story then please.

I like Akira, but I think way too many people put on their rose coloured glasses for the movie and refuse to realize its faults, its extremely convoluted story being the primary one.

One of the reasons I appreciated Akira is that I didn't get everything out of it in one viewing.
So to me, that isn't even a problem.

I've watched it more than once. The story still blows. The movie isn't something like the Matrix, that may take more than one viewing to "get" but has a story that totally makes sense once you understand it. Akira's story is just convoluted and have a number of loose ends at the end, which still end up not entirely making much sense no matter how many times you watch it. Granted, its strengths outside its story help overcome its faults.

Could always pick up the manga..
