Was the score too loud in anyone else's theater? There were some points where I couldn't hear the dialogue (at it seemed like important stuff) because the score was pounding.

Yes the score messed up some scenes, I don't know if it's a problem for everyone but I couldn't hear anything JGL said when he was yelling over the bridge, for example.

I loved how the music swelled, then stopped completely as Bruce jumped, and came back on full blast when he made it, followed to the quick cut of the guy in the cell hearing the cheers letting him know Bruce had made it.
also I love how Bruce didn't hesitate for a second when he got up there to help everyone else. He just dropped the rope for the others. Compared to when Talia escaped as a kid and you see the same rope there lol, just walks by it. Nice touch I thought.

Seriously. Zimmer and Howard were like a fucking dream team on BB. Zimmer for the epic, bombastic cues and Howard for subtle, evocative, emotional cues. It will eternally be a tragedy that they couldn't keep that relationship going.
Agreed. TDK was more or less all Zimmer because that movie did not focus on Bruce. TDKR was all about Bruce and would have benefited from Howard.

Oh, and speaking of Bruce's funeral, I definitely felt a lump in my throat when Alfred was breaking down and telling Bruce's parents he'd failed them. Made that Florence (or wherever) scene very satisfying.

Yeah I was glad to see Bruce alive, but I was more happy to see Alfred knowing he hadn't failed Bruce's parents.

The sight of Bruce's grave next to his parents and Alfred believing he'd failed the family was terrible to watch.

I think we can all agree that the first Bane fight scene is just the top 3 greatest Nolan scenes straight up. This is just a fact now. He did things you never knew he could do, he did things you never thought of, he did things you never thought he would do, and he made the familiar thrilling, shocking, and fucking terrifying. No one any walks away from that scene with out being in total awe.
My friend said he found it more disturbing than Jesus getting flogged in Passion of the Christ.

I never thought Bane breaking Batman's back could feel and sound so... whimpy. Seriously felt like a passing moment, just like many things in this movie that should have and could have made an impact but utterly failed to.

I actually don't really have a promise with Bane's death. We've already seen that Batman could defeat him, and it was probably the most significant way they could show Selina's redemption.
Exactly. Selina could not have returned in abetted fashion, redeeming her entirely in Bruce's eyes and no doubt turning him on, heh heh, wink wink.

Was there a particular reason why?

Not that has been made public, no. My own personal thought is that either JNH wasn't able to fully commit his time to TDK, or Zimmer simply overruled him. Either way, there is very little JNH in TDK. And then when it came time for TDKR, since Zimmer had scored most of TDK and all of Inception, I guess it was not shocking that JNH was dropped (or chose to leave) altogether.

To be fair, Bruce did not have to watch as his protector's face was mauled off by an angry mob.

I still can't believe Nolan did the backbreaking scene. It was like Nolan was in full on Troll DM mode with that and Robin.

And I loved both :(

Dude, some of those chanting guys are going to make the absolute best gifs. They looked fucking hilarious.

Maybe, but my friends and I all looked at each other when Bane picked Batman up... "Is he gonna do it?!" Yup, he did it. I was horrified, but it was the ultimate fanservice. I loved it. Same with the nod to Robin.

well he did have to watch the city he loves get massively destroyed by the man that put him there. But Bruce is a good guy, and threw that rope down right away because that's how he rolls.

It was the best scene in the film, but I think you're over selling it a bit.

I completely forgot that Ghul had a daughter. Her death scene was king of laughable. "my fathers legacy is complete".... *bleh* *dead*
Everything else was really good though.

Ha. I thought it actually seemed more brutal because of how realistic it seemed. I was really surprised Nolan went with that iconic back breaking shot, but I loved it.

That was good, especially as I wasn't expecting it at all, but it's Bane pounding Batman's face until the mask cracks in two that stands out in the scene.

Right. But what I'm saying is he probably would not have done so if he thought the guys down there would immediately try to kill him.

Now that I do agree with it. Batman kinda just bounced off his knee a bit. It didn't have a climatic oomph I was imagining.

But then again, it's hard to top the comic version for visual, iconic power

The best fight scene Nolan has done was Batman vs 7 or 8 thugs when he rescues Blake. Shot rather blandly, but the actual fight choreography was really good and Batman really fought fluidly instead of stiffly like he did in TDK. Very cool.

I can't wait for gifs of those cops running into the tunnels before they blow up, there was one cop in particular I remember just casually jogging in there as if it was an early morning run.

The only thing I would have liked in the back breaking scene was some sort of audible pained gasp from Bruce. From what I remember it was played as if he was already unconscious or something.

I actually liked the framing. It was like they just sat the camera there and let Batman go to work.

For what its worth, in the CD soundtrack liner notes it says "Extra special thanks to James Newton Howard" in bold, separated above all the other thank yous

Also, the kid singing the Anthem was Zimmer's idea

The score keeps going even through quiet dialogue scenes, if the levels in your cinema are bad you will have a bad time. Might be the reason so many people can't understand Bane.

"Extra special thanks to James Newton Howard, he whos work I have mined extensively to create the better cues in this score".

Thought the action overall was better shot. The end sequence with the Bat was filmed beautifully. I wanted one more good action sequence with batman though. No tumbler :(

Well if he'd actually broken his back like that, the movie would be over, Batman would have been paralysed and unable to recover in the prison. So you can't have it too much

Him punching Batman's head over and over with the CRACK of the mask felt devastating. And then he picks him up, holds him over his head, and brings him down on his knee and there was no weight or shock to it.
I disagree, the way bane just simply does it just like he does all his other horrible things that he does to people is what makes it so impactful to me.

Right, it should feel like a climax, a finisher, but it hit with the impact of a filler move. Just another move in the arsenal.

Batman kinda no-selling it didn't help matters.

Up until that point, I loved the idea that Batman had died. Once we hit that scene though, I was hoping he wasn't, because seeing Alfred so devastated like that was heartbreaking to watch.

What are you telling me? Breaking more than two vertebrae require some sort of Mike Tyson - type specialist to fix it?

I also really loved the imagery, when Batman first returned, of having like 100 cop cars after him.

Nolan lied to us so much about this film.

And in terms of Bane and Robin, he rewrote them so they're better than any way they've ever been done before, and will ripple throughout the comic lore forever. He changed things entirely with that stuff. I was in awe.
