Sleeping Dogs |OT| not releasing this would have been a True Crime

For those that played Batman Arkham City/Asylum - is the hand to hand combat similar to that game? The "freeflow" combat system? I LOVED! that in Batkman AC/Asylum

Thinking about picking this game up and recording little bits and pieces from it instead of doing my Darksiders II walkthrough.

It's not nearly as deep or smooth. Honestly even though I'm early in the game with no upgrades yet if it wasn't for the environment kills I would be bored out of my mind with the combat. Shoving someone's head into an AC fan is highly amusing to me.

Oh man, this game on PC (with the high res pack) is gorgeous. Runs really nice on my machine too. If we get console ports like this until the end of this gen, I'm going to be pretty satisfied with my current setup.

How is the combat in AA deep? It is literally 100% timing. And the timing is extremely forgiving.

Very early going. The look of the city is pretty nice, good ambiance and atmosphere. Not enjoying the driving much, but I was expecting that so it's cool. Voice acting seems surprisingly good despite the occasionally cheesy delivery from Wei.

Yeah, I'm not crazy about it. The finishers can be hilariously brutal and are a nice change of pace, though.

There are a lot of moves in AC that take up most of the buttons on the controller, as well as several that use 2 at once. The timing is not very forgiving if you're fighting 20 guys at once and accidentally hit the wrong button or hit one of the special guys with a move they block, ruining your combo. Sleeping Dogs so far isn't even as deep as Yakuza 4. We'll see what happens if you can unlock more moves.

That is all fine and good, but are fighting teqhniques missing from the PC version???

Not that I've seen. That is, I haven't gotten more of them, but there is an entire upgrade path based on more combat moves given by your old martial arts master. You have to find these statues for him and it will unlock moves.

You can be a real dick to people in this game just messing around with the fighting mechanics. Got into a random street fight with some of the more upscale citizens and accidentally tossed one of them into the street at the exact moment an ambulance was speeding by (maybe to help one of the guys I already KO'd) and it turned into a wonderful mess. In my haste to run away from the cops I stumbled upon one of those random groups of triads and the big grappler proceeded to kick the crap out of me. First time I ever fought that enemy type and I got beat down :(

yeah... any hints on where those are? Are they hidden in the environment, or side missions?

I've collected a couple of statues during missions, and one just putzing around.

Unlocking new melee moves is the shit. Leg breaks on random civilians ftw. It's nowhere as deep as Arkham which was extremely frustrating for the first few hours, but I've made my peace with it now. Plus the new moves that you can upgrade to make a big difference.

I think it was either two or three that are only available during a mission (as in, you can't reach those areas yet), the rest you can find while you're around the city.

As you level up your face, eventually you'll be able to see where all the shrines, lock boxes, cameras, and statues are.

But like everything else, they're bright flashing lights to tell you something is there.

I'm actually surprised that there wasn't a lot of variety when it comes to different attacks and environment kills, especially for a game that is so melee heavy. Off hand, I think there are less than 10 environment objects you can actually interact with to kill someone. And its not often that you see them either.

This game looks insane with the high res texture pack. Getting a solid 40fps, with some stuttering though :/.

Damn though, dem textures. Just saw that video someone posted about the combat intro (I got all those prompts btw, nothing missing in the pc version on my end) and the difference with this and the 360 version is crazy.

This actually runs pretty well on my notebook..

It will definitely run better on my desktop at home, though.

Only played half an hour so far.. but I'm pretty impressed.

It's kind of similar to Batman AC combat system.

How do you unlock new melee attacks or defense moves?

You find these jade statues and return them to the martial arts school (where you went with Emma Stone's character)

12 in all.

I think leveling up Triad gives you some skills as well, check the upgrades in the pause menu.

Somebody posted a link to a cheap Steam code from Direct2Play on the last page, but was quickly admonished for linking to them. Someone want to give me the quick rundown on why they're banned from discussion? I almost pulled the trigger on that deal until I saw that they were verboten from GAF.

Ugh got to one of the larger areas and I'm experiencing a lot of stuttering despite my framerate sticking to 60. Doesn't change no matter what settings I disable.

I've had some oddities with the PC version thus far.

1.) 1st time booting it only the characters, some props, and the skybox were rendering. Very bizzare. Restarting fixed it.

2.) At the very beginning when
you're running from the cops
, the person I was following would stop about half-way through. This happened multiple times; I had to bump into him a few times to get him moving again. Just trying to continue without him wouldn't work.

3.) I turned off hints, and while it told me how to perform the 1st two combos, I did not get tutorials for grappling or countering. Playing with a 360 controller.

I must say though, the cinematics look f'n great o PC, even at medium settings.

Hey guys, I got to the part where it says I need to 'Send a text to Ming' so I open the phone like it shows but I can't figure out how to send a text. Am I missing something?

Ain't got the game but for 3 it's later on you get those tutorial from all the videos I've seen, ones at Winston initiation (counter) other = chase tutorial cummulating to grapple.

I'm Australian so I can't play till next full lunar cycle -- or whatever bizarre artificially imposed delay is in place anyway.

this. sucks major ass.

i vpn'ed for battlefield 3 but only to play single player campaign before the game officially released. not going to risk it in this game since new user agreement etc.

Yeah, I got to the initiation, it just wasn't giving me the button prompts. The mission objective was to counter/grapple at the respective times though. It's no biggie, I figured it out, and push comes to shove I could probably look up the button mapping.

Just played an hour, up until you wake up in your apartment for the first time and drove around a bit.

Official Warp Record radio station. Hell yes, listening to Rustie while breaking wheelie distance records, don't need to have my own music going now!

Made a great first impression on me so far, love the slick menus/UI and as everyone says it looks real nice. My PC is modest at this point and I'm happy with how it runs on Medium.

you gotta type MING and then something random, type "large pepperoni" for laughs

I'm missing something. How do I get to the phone? When I hit the controller up button I get lots of stuff like Messages, Contacts, etc, etc.

X times 5
X, hold X
X, X, hold X, so on and so forth

Grapple is B
- up to three Xs to finish with a throw down
- X, hold X
- X, X, hold X

Counter is Y
- you can counter someone while you're attacking or holding someone.

Hold A to run
- B to tackle (I don't remember if you can do this without unlocking the skill)
- X to jump kick
- A to run off wall, then X for off the wall kick

Edit:
You can't always grab one of the fat guys, you'd have to stagger them. Nor can you interrupt their attacks, so you either counter their punch/kick, or you go through the QTE when they grab you.

I deleted the game from my Steam. I think I did a mistake with that VPN trick. I can't unlock achievements and I'm having some problems with the game.

I'll wait until it's officially available in the EU region.

:(

LOL wtf.

Ok, the game ran very smooth on my computer at medium setting at the very first glance. Then the weird bug where the guy just stop running in the intro... ok no biggie.

Then I tried changing display high, bam, everything disappeared, the building, the characters, only the skycrapers background are left.

So.... ok, switched back to medium display setting, bam.... me and my companion just free fall down some blackhole of infinity.

I had to restart with main menu. LOL. what the hell was that about.

no you need to use your real life phone (some shitty meta game), text ming and then something afterwards like pizza to 212-941-7994

you'll get a code back to enter and the mission icon appears - no idea why they chose to do this
