7 million 3DS units sold.

Someone should photoshop Iwata's face on to Stark's body.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I don't think the next Nintendo Direct is anywhere near, NoA still has to take the XL and NSMB2 out, also, doesn't Nintendo always has an event for the week before TGS?

They pulled off a Nintendo Direct less than 20 days after E3. And so far, they've always done a classic Nintendo Direct every two months.

Fun note: In David Sheff's Game Over, he chronicles the enthusiast and press reactions to Super Mario World when it was revealed, and a lot of people were aboard the "This just looks like Super Mario Bros. 3, why are they so creatively bankrupt?" train.

Most people don't remember this because they were eight. But part of me expects some bitter gnashing of teeth in ten to fifteen years when people talk about how much fun they had with NSMB Wii and the older set go "NO IT WAS TERRIBLE DID YOU NOT SEE HOW PREDICTABLE THE SNOW LEVEL WAS"

I would have been happier had Super Mario World been more like 3. On the other hand, I'm not as big a fan of the NSMB series, so the similarities between entries bug me.

Edit: Also, are any noteworthy Vita games coming out next week?

I do hope they'll make a conference as the one last year in September. That was epic, one of the best show ever, better than 90% editions of E3.

The presence of a Nintendo Direct next week doesn't negate the fact there will be a Fall Conference like the recent past. They could easily announce most of the new 3DS stuff ( at least first party) at ND ( NSMB2 and 3DS XL announcements make it clear how the Directs are important for them and how they can be places for very big announcements), in order to leave lots of space for the final (?) Wii U unveil at the Fall Conference.

Did you read the Iwata asks?

Yes, it's what put me off getting a second copy for multi-player.

It's pretty informative in that design decision and the battle for leader will be a fun game in on itself.

It's hacked in. The "design decision" is because they didn't want to bother re-working the levels to expand the view for two players. The battle for leader on such a small screen is exactly what would get real old real fast.

Not that it matters because I'll probably never play co-op

I'm sure I'll play it at 3DS StreetPass meetups, but based on the description/video in the Iwata Asks, I doubt I'll change my mind on it. NSMB Wii multi was fun and only slightly annoying when people got way far back. With the much small play screen (and no expansion), that annoying part is going to come up a lot more often.

It offends me because it's lazy gamemaking. I don't give COD, Madden or FIFA a pass for pulling this shit every year, and I'm not going to give it to Mario. I'm sure others enjoy it. I know others enjoy it. But are you telling me those very same people wouldn't buy an actual NEW 2D Mario platformer with new music/assets/gameplay engine?

The fact is, as long as these games keep selling, Nintendo will continue to play it safe with their 2D Mario games. For some, that's fine. For me... I have higher standards than that. I expect more out of 2D Mario games, especially when we're talking about generational leaps between sequels.

Except the difference between COD/Madden/FIFA/whatever and NSMB is that they only make one 2d Mario every generation for each platform. Much like how they only make one Mario Kart per system.

NSMB Wii came out over two and a half years ago.

The next noteworthy Vita game is Hatsune Miku, coming out August 30.

The "too many Mario games" criticism has been thrown at Nintendo since back in the N64 days. Counting sports titles, spinoffs, etc... back in the day, they got a lot of flack for too much Mario, despite the fact that each Mario game is pretty different.

If Nintendo wanted to, they could have put out a rushed a NSMB title on DS and Wii out every year and we could have had 6 or 7 of those by now. Instead, we only got 2 and aren't going to get anymore. It seems they are pushing another one out for each of there new systems, which hardly seems like milking at all. We got two 3D titles on Wii (which is excessive by Nintendo's conservative 1-per-system history).

If Nintendo did play it safe with NSMB 2, that wouldn't all too bad considering all their good output otherwise. My biggest concern is the downloadable stuff they are doing. I like to have a complete package "on disk" as they say, even if it is all being developed post-release. Once I do get a 3DS, I'm going to wait to see if Nintendo does a "complete package" NSMB 2 release like Microsoft does with their platinum hits that includes all DLC.

DQ10 seems to be doing all right so far. The servers were unbearably crowded last night; I think SE isn't even actually prepared for a higher userbase right now. But then again, holidays and such tend to crowd servers more anyway. What I'm personally interested in is what will happen with the game once the free 20 days are up for the majority of the playerbase.

3DS 8 Million or Vita 1 million. Which one wins the race?

It'll be really close because no way 3DS maintains over 100k forever and there's nothing to really push the system as hard again. Vita on the other hand finally has Hatsune Miku coming which won't do much for the system as a whole but should give it enough of a bump to continue posting 10k numbers.

Pokemon next year? MH4?

Vita will hit 1 million before those games are out, but 3DS is gonna get a huuuuuuge boost next year. I can see it hitting 9 million before Vita hits 2, honestly.

I was talking about before Vita hits a million. I mean there Devil Summoner and Senran Kagura but those won't be anything more than niche releases.

Shin Megami Tensei 4 should be out by this year as well i think. The 3ds should receive a small boost from that as well

Pokemon is every 2 years, I thought.

EDIT: Unless you mean Mystery Rumble Pokepark: Electric Boogaloo

You're right. North American and Japanese release dates are messing with my head (BW was 2010 in Japan, 2011 in North America).

However, I can't see them waiting much longer to pull the trigger on the first mainline 3DS Pokemon titles. From what I understand, Game Freak has two separate Pokemon teams. The secondary team released the remakes, and recently Black 2/White 2. I wouldn't be surprised if the main team is working on the next gen of Pokemon, and Japan will see a September 2013 release.

Unless something significantly changes 3DS will hit 13 or 14 million before Vita hits 2.

That's brutal :lol

Great numbers indeed, but I don't think it's fair to compare Persona 4 Arena with other fighting games, since I do think people who bought this are mainly Atlus / Persona fans.

In a way yeah, I liken much of its appeal to say, Tales of Vs, but yeah there's no denying how impressive it's doing.

Rune Factory 4 is doing really well too. Is it the best selling RF game yet?

Vita will reach a million before 3DS reaches 8 million. But I do believe that Miku will push out 50-60k Vitas on the games release week. Vita will like now go down to sub 10k/week numbers after a month though

Week 42 (Oct 15 - Oct 21) - 11,000 (Eiyuu Densetsu: Zero no Kiseki Evolution)
Week 43 (Oct 22 - Oct 28) - 9,500

Total - 127,000 + 873,185 (Media Create) = 1,000,000

Miku will be lucky if it debuts at 120k, it really ain't pushing that many vitas in a week, 25 to 30k maybe

Of course they will. They aren't going to reveal Wii U's release date and launch line-up on a Nintendo Direct video that's just being seen by a few fans. They want that to be covered by the worlds' press.

Though if we do the same using famitsu numbers we come to the beginning of December, by which time 3ds could very well be over 8 million

don't forget this week is Obon. 3DS numbers will probably double, Vita numbers will likely see a sizable increase as well.

Obon Festival

Obon is one of the most important Japanese traditions. People believe that their ancestors' spirits come back to their homes to be reunited with their family during Obon and pray for the spirits. For the reason, Obon is an important family gathering time, and many people return to their hometowns.

Obon was originally celebrated around the 15th day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar. Obon periods are nowadays different in various regions of Japan. In most regions, Obon is celebrated around August 15, and it typically begins 13th and ends 16th of August. In some areas in Tokyo, Obon is celebrated around July 15, and it is still celebrated on the 15th day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar in many areas in Okinawa.

Wow, 3DS went from 4K to over 196K during obon last year? Is that the biggest hardware increase over 1 week ever recorded?
