I suppose I'll post my personal anime fandom timeline and other people can follow with theirs:
...

Sure, why not:

The first anime I ever saw, probably in 1989, was Maya no Bouken on Croatian TV (here it was known as Pčelica Maja). No one knew it was anime then of course, I was 3 years old or so when I first saw it, but I can't be certain.

Fast forward to:

1990

I just turned four and my family got bored with our regular video-store (Fontana) so we decided to join a new one (Fox).
Lo and behold, an amazing section of new cartoons. Voltron, Saber Rider, Robotech - the three I saw and fell in love with. Of course they were dubbed but we can consider them anime, no?
Anyway, something else was there too: Lily C.A.T. and Crystal Triangle. Saw both of them as a kid, and I clearly remember knowing they were Japanese cartoons, maybe they weren't even dubbed in English. All of the tapes were bootlegs, of course, no one in Croatia would distribute that shit.
I recorded most of that stuff for my personal collection on VHS, so I watched it for the next few years, with other cartoons, of course.

I also remember in 1992, when I was six, my father bought me a Sega Genesis (he was a sailor on those huge fishing boats, basically traveled through most of the world), and a Japanese copy of Battle Mania, and I also remember knowing that it was drawn in Japanese style. I have no idea how I knew that, but I know I did.

1994

A new anime I saw on VHS, this time dubbed in Croatian so it was an official release, was They Were Eleven. I loved that movie, I saw it at a friend's house and we were both blown away.
That year a new kid came to class, his name was Mijat, he was fat and he lived in Germany. He had and amazing collection of SNES games (I fell in love with Street Fighter as an 8-year old kid in his apartment) and a satellite dish. This meant all fo those crazy German channels with all those crazy cartoons and anime of course.
Although I was mostly interested in Power Rangers then, I remember watching Saint Seiya with him, as well as DRagonball and maybe Sailor Moon (this might have happened a bit later).

1997

My father bought an issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly and Ultra Game Players for me (one of those had some Soul Blade cards with character info on them - Hwang was absent) and I saw pictures of DBZ action figures on the last few pages of EGM. I stared at those characters for hours, drew them, imagined stories between them, tried to figure out what the yellow hair color means - I was basically a fan before having seen a single episode of DBZ.
Soon I found out that my cousin had a satellite dish with Italian TV and they had DBZ on it. I was basically making up excuses to go visit him every day just so I could watch some DBZ. Didn't understand shit, but I loved every minute.
Later that year Croatian television started broadcasting Candy Candy in it's entirety. I followed it with my uncle everyday. Good times.

1999

Finally got a satellite dish, decided to turn it to the side that lets me watch German TV (Italian TV had much more anime but I was under the impression that German television was better, plus I wanted German MTV - a good decision, as we will see later).
Anyway, Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Dragonball, Digimon, everything was there (not DBZ though), I enjoyed all of the shows a lot.
In 2000, Croatian TV started broadcasting Pokemon and Dragonball (and Sailor Moon later) so everyone was watching that for a while, it became quite popular. You basically had your school bullies talking about the tournament in Dragonball, what characters were cool and so on.

2001

I guess anime became quite the fad in Germany, because a bunch of shows started broadcasting that year.
Let's see:
- Dragonball Z finally started on RTL II (August 27th), first an episode a day (starting at 7:30 PM), then they switched it to two episodes a day.
Some other stuff was airing on that channel too: Doremi, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, Monster Rancher, Pretty Cure, Wedding Peach, Power Stone and One Piece.
Probably some more stuff but it's hard to remember it all.
- Tele5 started broadcasting Gundam Wing, my first Gundam. I loved it, naturally.
- The channel VOX had this segment called Anime Nacht (Anime night) where they would show a bunch of OVAs or random episodes during the entire night. It aired on Friday nights, once a month I think.
Some of the stuff I saw there includes a bunch of Hentai (yeah, first time), X The Movie, A Kite, Gunsmith Cats, Record of Lodoss War (the OVA and the TV show in it's entirety), DNA2, Phantom Quest Corp, Midnight Panther, The Hakkenden, El Hazard, Saber Marionette R (and some of J), Orchid Emblem, Sakura Wars, Tokio Private Police, Heat Guy J, a LOT of stuff basically, all in the span of two or three years.
- VIVA (a German music channel, something like MTV) started broadcasting a lot of shows - Agent Aika, Blue Submarine No. 6, Candidate for Goddess, Hellsing, X (the CLAMP show), and Noir and Najica Blitz Tactics some time later (those are the ones I can remember)
-and finally, German MTV was basically the king for me: it started with Golden Boy (I forgot to mention watching this earlier, probably in 2000 for the first time), then some Lupin III (they basically edited some of the movies and TV specials in a TV show of sorts),
and THEN Cowboy Bebop and Escaflowne in late 2001 I think. Dear God, I can't begin to describe how I was feeling while watching those shows, I believe that was when I realized I truly loved anime.
Some years later we got Gantz, Gits: SAC and Wolf's Rain from them, but I had already seen those shows by then.

I think that's the most of it. Phew.

~2002-2003

Around this time I saw my first fansubs - the first two episodes of the Rurouni Kenshin Reminiscence OVA, the Bebop movie, and GITS and Akira.
Loved it.
That was basically when I started to follow some show weekly (or almost weekly). The problem was, my internet was slow so people had to send stuff to me so I could watch it, so they would send me 2 or 3 episodes of a show every couple of weeks (gott love those Anime fans). I watched Naruto that way, and later FMA and Bleach.

After that, things got a little better, Croatia started getting decent internet, and we could finally start ordering stuff online, which was something I always wanted.

Oh, and the first time I really followed a show every week was in Spring 2007, and the shows were Claymore and TTGL.

This post turned out pretty long, so probably no one will read it, but I had some fun remembering everything.

It's a background subject so they haven't really made it a major part of the plot until now, but they've definitely talked about it and referred to it multiple times throughout the series. You should watch the series again at some point!

so what is it?
honestly it all feels like fan fiction,
and chances are none of it is real anyway
hell one character even says "it feels like we're nearing the final episode" which is way too self aware

hope y'all are looking forward to the best comedy of fall 2012

As amusing as the plot twist is, this adaptation looks pretty painful. Especially since they have to turn the MC into an actual character instead of a cipher you don't even see outside of a baseball mini-game. And they've somehow made the character designs look worse.

Still, you'd think that there would have been some kind of fujoshi killer app for PS3 by now which would have made the market a little more comfortable with the idea of producing BD copies of some of these shows! Some game like Hakuouki or Vitamin X HD can't be that risky, yeah?
Hakuouki is actually on the PS3. lol
There's also that Atelier Otome game too, actually!

Well, yes, that's how influences work. C is influenced by B who was influenced by A. The further removed in time you become from the original influence the more it becomes obscured, but you can trace the lineage back from person to person if you so desire.
Yeah. I don't know if I'd want to go back and watch early Shinbo stuff. I'm not even sure what that even entails.

Kono Naka Ni Hitori, Imouto Ga Iru! 5

To start the show they
have his little sister call him and warn him not to masturbate too much. I don't think the witch is the little sister either. My guess it's going to be the blond girl or the girl pretending to be a guy

Hyouka 05

The answer to the mystery of Chitanda's Uncle comes to light.
The old librarian was super cute in her high school years with her Mugibrows.
Chitanda is still curious!
Also, violence against rabbits.
And we find out what Hyouka means.
This actually isn't a bad episode all things considered.
I'm a little more into the show.

I see that I'm not the only who was surprised to see that Jo Jo's is going to be adapted by some no-name guy. Considering how hugely popular and successful the series has been I'd have expected some rather more recognisable talent to be working on it. That's rather disappointing.

I mean, David Production? Really?

Really?

You're just mad because you're not David motherfucking Production.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised about the new Jo Jo's production. After all it became clear that we'd entered a strange time with Studio 4oc making the Berserk movies.

I really have absolutely no idea who makes the decision about which studio's adapt which properties. Are they simply going with the low bidders? I don't know enough about the whole process of how a manga becomes an anime to make and judgement calls. Do studios pitch to companies? etc etc.

Another possibility in this case is that David Production might have some sort of working relationship with Warner Brothers as it is, and got the gig as part of that relationship. They created the Baby Superman pilot, and went on the produce the show for Warner.

Im the only dude on the board that saw that Pliot a while back - no where near indicitive of what D-Production can do but it was - OK. Of course Warners has been dabbling with the J-Studios over there in a way I havent seen for a long time out of anyone in the states. Even Sony aint that deep despite They own a whole studio. (Yeah, Yeah diffrent divisions but still)

The talk earlier about Kampfer reminded me of tiff. Where did he go? I haven't seen him around the anime thread for awhile.

I actually found out about Kampfer because of his Natsuru avatar he had when he was still Legendary_Warrior. A ANN article I coincidentally saw just a little later had a picture of the same character and I found out the show was called Kampfer.

I guess AAequal hasn't come back yet either.

Yeah I saw this around the time I watched Saikano too. I must have been in a depression anime phase. Not DEPRESSED just watching depressing anime.

I've heard you mention Saikano a few times. Did you ever happen to read the side story manga called "Love Story,Killed"?

I haven't seen the show but I've read that manga story. It's a bit disturbing and depressing like you mention the show to be but the narrative twist or reveal, I guess you'd call it, was pretty interesting. I don't think I've ever seen a story done that way before. How it's told you can tell it's different earlier on but it wasn't until the end that I got it.

If you don't mind mild spoilers and are curious about my being vague, then I'm referring to the fact that
the narrator of the story is actually one of the boys bullets. Maybe it was his very last bullet, I can't remember.

Being mature and handling mature topics are two different things though. And of course, for some people self-destructive behaviour is emblematic of some other underlying problem that is out of their control.

Yeah, sorry, that's part of what I was trying to say but my post was probably a bit clumsily worded. As far as underlying problems, even as I was writing my example I didn't think it was the best. I guess I was going more for something similarly well known that can have negative effects on the body.

It's definitely easier to make a film with a self-contained plot feel consistent with its series of origin when the series is largely comprised of episodic content itself. Films adapted from long-running shounens with contiguous plots never quite feel "right" to me; probably because even when events are marked as having occurred between X and Y plot points in the source material, the idea of new threats suddenly appearing and then never being referenced again is never exactly believable

I sometimes get bothered by this point as well. While it's definitely not a shounen and as much as I love the K-On! movie, I had this exact same problem with it as well.

Obviously since the movie came afterwords the original details of the story didn't exist but for the fact that they interspersed it's story over a few episodes of the show and in the context of the film the trip is a big deal but then you go and watch the show and it's never mentioned, it just feels kind of strange.

Binbougami ga! 7
Keita Tsuwabuki FTW! I almost started to ship Rindou with him, but well, Rindou would have been awesome as a guy, rather disappointing.

Wow, the things I never thought to put together...

Clearly this show was much deeper in reference material than I had originally thought. I had no clue about all of that, though i've seen the reference material. Crazy.

Makes me want to watch a lot more carefully into shows.

Yeah, even if shows make references just for the sake of it, it's still fun to find and recognize them. As for Denpa Onna, it makes me wonder how many of those were actually in the original light novels.

As an example, with Nisemonogatari, in one of the backgrounds in one episode there is a sign that says the following isn't allowed and one of the four symbols is Kyubey from Madoka. Sort of like a "No Kyubeys" Haha. This one obviously wasn't in the original novels.

Nice video. I'm always interested in some nice hair animation. Like Icarus, I'm also a big fan of the whole "Shoujo wind effect".

You should start making nonsensical threads like crazy buttocks on a train revealing upcoming animation projects.

Tiff tends to disappear for periods of time (usually due to a ban), but he's back now.

No I haven't, but there is a little OVA called "Saikano: another Love Story" That tells more of the daily life of Chise as a weapon and some other characters she met in the military. The whole show is maddeningly soul-crushingly depressing. I recommend it actually, but only if you are prepared for the onslaught. Maybe if you take your time with the show its easier to digest it.
I mean the ending theme is Sayonara. Like, HOLY SHIT SAD.

Yeah, that's fair.

If you are photo-referencing, could you at least avoid a spelling mistake? Unless "The White House" is copyrighted and this is their version of "WacDonalds". :p

Also, I don't know how I feel about genre savviness now. It's almost as pointless as references for the sake of referencing, since it happens so often.

As for what the show is about, I remembered that I gave up on trying to understand this show before the Olympics happened. lol

I explained it all best here.

But seriously, I don't think they ever really mention the Kyoto trip again in K-ON!! in episodes after it happens. And they made the special episode about them thinking about the trip and getting passports. I think they did a decent job tying them together.

Nendoroids are the best man. You don't know what you're missing.

I dunno. I like chibis and all that but I prefer regular sized detailed figurines. I guess just a preference. I like dynamic poses and the crazy outfit designs and such. I dont like figmas because of the joints, but Im making an exception for Kuroyukihime because...she's Kuroyukihime.

I-I think I will make an exception to not having Nenderoids....
is this available for preorder on the usual sites?
I...I need it.

I think you said before that you're not into the jointed stuff but there are some nendos that are really damn cute (the K-On girls and Taiga are my favorites in my collection). Just give in :p

Nendoroids aren't ugly like figmas are.

In the spirit of hair videos, this video was a regular feature of my university anime society days...

I had never actually heard the full song before now. This video also reminds me there are still so many "older" anime I have yet to see.

Tiff tends to disappear for periods of time (usually due to a ban), but he's back now.

I see, thanks for telling me.

Yeah, I'd like to give the show a watch sometime. I just found out there was also apparently a live action film made as well, back in 2006.

As for the song I actually love sad songs. They never really bothered me, I actually find them relaxing. All music really has a meaning or is trying to convey someone's thoughts or emotions but I find sad music, maybe because of the nature of it, really conveys those emotions even more so for me.

I don't really like sad country songs though. It feels more like when someone as part of a couple breaks up with another and they start listening to sad music but instead of just listening they write a song. It just comes across as almost more of a "teen emo" type of thing to me haha.

There's a porn site called The White house. Its a mistake you don't want to make lol.
Oh, its gone now. wonder why?

As much as no one will probably ever believe me, I've never actually been to a pornographic site, or seen a film or ever looked at a magazine of that nature. Naturally I'd imagine those types of things would be easy to find but I personally don't really have any interest in that topic.

I explained it all best here.

Haha, interesting timelines. Yeah, it wasn't a big problem and I had thought about the episode about the passports and them talking about going on a trip, like you mentioned. The Kyoto trip is a really good point too, as that's right, they don't mention it again. It certainly does hold together a lot better than other shows story's that's for sure.
