Nintendo Power ceasing publication

Everyone thinks of their childhood...what about the children now who have a subscription? THEY WILL NOT EXPERIENCE IT...THINK OF THE CHILDREN PEOPLE.

I loved Nintendo power back in the day.

So many minutes/hours maybe even days poring over that magazine as a kid: studying the covers, reading about games I could/would never play, looking at maps/screenshots/character art, reading the comics and letters, etc.

All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

But our source says that Nintendo, which was always "difficult to work with," was uninterested in renewing that contract or in taking part in a number of digital initiatives that Future saw as necessary for the long-term health of the brand. He added that Nintendo doesn't seem interested in taking over direct control of the magazine again (Nintendo and Future representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment for this story).

One more thing to thank recent NoA for, I guess.

Nintendo Power back in the day was crazy. I got a copy of Dragon Warrior, the full NES game, just for subscribing.

I guess since Nintendo had Nintendo Week/Nintendo Channel on the Wii and Nintendo Show 3D on the 3DS they felt that was all they needed. Sadly that isn't the case.

I didn't realize it'd been so thoroughly abandoned by its home base. It was just a matter of time, in that case. Shows how little interest Nintendo had left in the enthusiast market. R.I.P.

The end of an era. I haven't picked up an issue in years, but I got a free copy of Dragon Warrior (Quest) on the NES for subscribing in 1988.

Same here, I still have the game too.

I haven't read the magazine in years, but its sad to think it won't be around anymore.

Aww man, this is very sad

I remember as a kid always waiting for the magazine to come in the mail and being so hyped about the games coming out that they were showcasing. The beta Goldeneye shots from the mag are still fresh in my head

Had a sub for 3-4 years starting in 1993.

The first issue I got had StarFox on the cover, I was so blown away I decided to ask for a SNES instead of a Genesis.

The mag got a bit too 1990's-attitude after a while and the cheerleading got a bit too blatant. But I loved it in the SNES/GameBoy era.

This was my favorite mag when I was a kid. I haven't even looked at one in over a decade but man does that name bring back some memories. Sad to see it go

With a small amount of effort this could be transitioned into a great online portal for Nintendo news. Such a wasted opportunity.

This is really, really disappointing to hear... But also not very surprising...

I've been subscribing to Nintendo Power since Issue 32 (January 1992), and had since also gone back and gotten all of the issues of it that I had missed, as well as all of the issues of the Fun Club News that came before it except for the first issue of that.

That said, when Nintendo Power switched over from being published by Nintendo, to being outsourced to Future with Issue 222 in December 2007 (following the closing of their online forum the month before as well of course), the feeling of the magazine changed dramatically. I know people criticised it for being "Not much more than a big Nintendo advertisement," but, taking it for what it was, it did a magnificent job at it, and having those close ties directly to Nintendo produced some wonderful stuff. After it switched over to being published by Future, it became "just another magazine."

Still, despite the past few years having been rather discouraging for it, I had kept up my subscription, because I just kind of felt like it was something I needed to do. And while, as I said, it's not surprising at all that something like this would happen, it's still very disappointing...

Surely this is a ploy by Chris Slate to relaunch it as Ultra Nintendo Power... right? Right?!

R.I.P. ;_;

Got my first issue/sub 10 years ago with Mario Sunshine and stuck with it for all but a year or so. Am currently subscribed so if 281 or beyond makes it out I'll have ta cherish 'em forever.

Also:
There is at least one bright spot in the world of printed game magazines. Game Informer rose to become the third most popular magazine in the country this year, with nearly 6 million subscribers that were mostly gained through its point-of-sale relationship with mega-retailer GameStop.
Thats the worst -_-!

Back before I could afford multiple consoles, I was a subscriber. Cancelled my subscription when I got an internet connection and a PS2. Sad to see it go, though it's not surprising. There's not much room for print in an era where video game news, previews, reviews, videos, and even demos can be obtained instantly and for free.

Had a subscription all throughout my childhood and teens. I haven't looked at an issue for years for years now, but it's still really sad to see it go.

Awww man, that's sad. Leaving aside childhood nostalgia, which is as strong for me as anyone my age (I remember moving to a different city as a kid and having the new issue waiting in the mailbox when we drove up to our new house), they were a pretty good magazine these last few years too. There was at least one in-depth interview worth reading per issue and usually a cool feature or two as well.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Subscribed from the Zelda II issue (Jan/Feb 1989) all the way up to the release of the N64. Can't believe it's gone now, it was such an important part of my childhood. Remember waiting every day for the mailman to come in hopes I'd get the latest NP mag.

So what's left as far as distinct gaming mags? Game Informer, Edge, GamesTM and Famitsuu?

Sad. Got my first issue in 1988 and will receive my last (I guess) sometime soon. The end of an era.

I still go back and look at my older issues from time to time. I prefer the old game guidebook format over today's review/preview focus.
