Maturity, bitches.
Not even emperors can port-beg.

Why do avatars sometimes disappear on banned users?

Assuming [post=41319177]this[/post] is the post in question someone also got banned for asking for a Mac port despite it already being announced for PCs. /nitpicking

Not that I ever want to be banned, but if I were, I think this would be the appropriate avatar.

Hi, I've never really posted here, but I've been watching My-Hime, which has been a rather insipid tour-de-force of every beach, onsen, karaoke, various festival, etc. episodes and it has got me wondering about the origin of the cliche anime slice of life/character building/monster of the week episodes.

Was there a series that really set the foundation for having the various themed episodes like this? Or was it just an organic situation of "We'll what are we going to do to link the episodes between the climax of the arcs" and having the themed episodes naturally grow.

Summer Wars would have been better if it hadn't been written by Satoko Okudera. :| Yoshida >>>>>> her

I still don't know how this person is still allowed to write, what a terrible writer, maybe worse then okada.

All she did was slap on some half backed family drama staring a ton of 1 dimensional characters to the already existing story of digimon, that helped the movie draaggggg on and on.

I just want to mention that we are now 2,750 posts away from |OT3|! We can do it! Ganbatte, Animu-GAF!

The current Wall of Shame (cut-off at 100):
Razgriz-Specter 134
Would have sworn I posted more than that in here.

At episode 30 of Turn A Gundam
Liking it much more than G Gundam but less than 0083.
Will say this show has some of my least favorite mech designs ever.

Summer Wars is awesome. If you consider that melodrama, then what the fuck is The Girl Who Leapt Through Time? I much prefer the writing in Summer Wars than that piece of copout.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time definitely has less eyerolling moments than Summer Wars.

I give summer wars that, at least it's better then "leapt through time" but still a poor verison of digimon.

I don't think Summer Wars is particularly melodramatic - despite the "family gathers, argues, sad things happen" stuff that characterises a whole host of live action films that aren't really AnimeGAF's cup of tea I suspect. But nor would I say that TokiKake is melodramatic - while the ending is very emotional I don't think the reactions and attitudes of anyone involved is particularly over the top. Is your particular complaint that
Makoto gets an extra time leap back after Chiaki uses his last one
?

I only saw Summer Wars for the first time last week so it's relatively fresh in my mind, but I think my main issue with it is that it's all a bit too "convenient". I actually enjoyed the family drama more than the OZ action sequences, but I found it a bit of a stretch that
all those significant people would gather under one roof. Of course it doesn't end up mattering that Kenji "solved" the equation (because he didn't), but that both Wabisuke and Kazuma should be part of the same family gathering is just too much for me
. I found the family interactions plausible (with only a little dramatic license involving a naginata...) but like I said it feels fairly artificial.

I have other problems with the narrative of Summer Wars, but melodrama ain't one.

And the student council is back to full strength, with the additions of Hani Usami and Kiri Katou, voiced respectively by Yuka Iguchi (Index, Tsukihi, etc.) and Ryota Ohsaka (Yuki in Tsuritama). A good set of introductory stories.

Also, Shinzou getting excited over being insulted by Kana Hanazawa Saaya was priceless.

---------------------------

By the way, the listing for the Gintama TV return apparently indicated it would be taking over Sket Dance's current timeslot. What that means for the future of Sket Dance remains unclear for now.

That was kind of dumb.

No clue who anyone is, what's going on, why they're on a floating ship, why are the boobs xbox huge, what's that holographic shit everyone has, why is that guy trying to ask out a dead chick, why was there a demon dude there, why were there a bunch of weird looking people that looked nothing like the students?

Yeah, that's about it.

This dub script is like watching an officially sanctioned abridged series. So GOOOOOD. Definitely makes an otherwise bad show into something unique. My sides still hurt from the experience. It's nice to see a dub embrace its own incompetence every once in a while.

I guess this is probably the first time I've seen an anime touch on Bulimia as I honestly don't remember watching anything that's touched on it before.
I can't say I'm fond with the current set-up of developing the characters by having a climactic drama episode followed by a quick resolution in the next one. It seems kinda lazy compared to the earlier episodes which were much better handled in this regard. Still, it's not really stopping me from enjoying this series and at least they touched on Wein some more!

Yeah, they pretty much brushed the
Bulimia
thing aside at the very beginning of the episode. Oh well, Sawa's dad pretty much owns after that bit with
giving the school heaps of shit over the phone.
I wonder if the next episode will finally focus on Wein as he really needs the character development.

This will be my 76th post in the thread. Once again, I'm on pace to hit around 90ish posts. I'm an expert at staying off the Wall of Shame.

Gunslinger Girl 7

This episode was pretty tight with the budget. I noticed a higher amount of panning shots over still frames than usual. But the show's efficient direction is still in force, and they take that money saved and put it towards a pretty good action scene. I couldn't tell if the car chase at the end was CG or not, though.

I wouldn't say this episode began in media res, but it takes its time revealing details about the mission at hand, which keeps things tense in the early going when it's obvious that everyone is hiding information. The mission plays out as a single linear sequence spanning the entire episode, and it makes perfect sense as things happen. It felt very quick, in a good way.

iPY0mbOTI1oCD.png

This shot pans out to put the whole painting in the frame, which means it has to have some symbolic significance. Does anyone recognize it? I'd love to know more about it.

If you couldn't already tell, I really liked this episode. There was a certain tragic irony in Fillipo's conversation with Rico about his past as an art student. The girls have no future outside the Agency, and it's tough being reminded of that.

I expect to see your reports on the cookies & tea and badminton scenes on my desk no later than 0700.

I will be sure to pay those scenes special attention when I watch the rest of Utena tonight (US Eastern time, not my time).

If I remember they explain the history behind all of that really well soon, though I remember wtching the first episode at least three for some strange reason. I cant wait to hear the dub in just under two months.

I cant be the only one thats a fan.

Looks like the episode counts for some upcoming shows might have been revealed: Sukitte Ii na yo is indicated for 13 episodes, while Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo and Little Busters! each are marked for a full set of 24 and 26 episodes, respectively.

Thats going to be quite the long story for LB, hopefully it remains engaging the whole way through.

By the way, the listing for the Gintama TV return apparently indicated it would be taking over Sket Dance's current timeslot. What that means for the future of Sket Dance remains unclear for now.

I though Sket Dance could go forever, Ill miss having a weekly school based comedy fix.

Oh man, I bet Gintama will make a episode for that about retaking back their old timeslot. lol

Gintama 71

That was a really nice ending to the arc. This was a pretty good arc, who would have guessed an arc about rebelling robotic maids would be so good.

That's why gintama is so good .. you get thrown into arcs without thinking if it's for comic purposes or not ..and suddenly without realising it you just realises that it's a shame it's over ..

Another example is the baby arc that start on a total comic purpose and quickly becomes something totally serious .

it's gintama magic.

I just blame Ken Akamatsu for everything because he's a hack.

I enjoy ken akamatsu works .. i currently want to slap him for not drawing the istanbul arc of negima.

I thought it was pretty funny and weird at one point in time and I liked seeing the characters in this style. Funniest scene for me was with
megane Taku seeing Kuroyukihima on Haru and then motioning for Chiyu to do the same to him
.

Also loved when, ending spoiler
Scarlet Rain came and fired off at Ash Roller, lol

As sonicmj1 put it before, this episode indeed cut corners on the animation. There was quite a number of still pans over static images of a decently detailed Italy. The story and character interaction was fair.

BpcdY.jpg

Unfortunately not "slapuga." :Branduil

Fillipo's remarks towards Rico were kind, but
unknowing of the lifespan of the girls in the program left a deliberate gap in the reception.
The scene shared more details on how age is of value to two "worlds" for different reasons.
Obviously, transitioning to the normal world is impossible for the girls at this point, but it's what they know.
Rico doesn't seem to have an extreme emotional response to this (such is the nature of these soldiers). However, the viewer is well aware.

Overall, I found it a decent episode focused on a single mission. I appreciate that the episode carried the mission through completely and didn't harshly segment it apart from a different goal or focus. We even get classical music in an "action" scene again!

It seems to be this painting.

Though I can't pick out a parallel that I'm completely positive on. The most I picked out was that the event in the painting takes place in Spring. In the scene you posted from Gunslinger Girl, Fillipo is speaking about
the importance of youth and how Rico has her whole life ahead of her while it is too late for him to follow past dreams. Spring being the season associated with birth or blooming.
I visualize it as a set piece that possibly accentuates the youth of Rico (or how Fillipo identifies Rico's youth). You also have Chloris who is in the process of being taken away by Zephyrus. (Rico having her youthfulness stolen away or her presence taken away from a setting of youth
thanks to Social Welfare Agency
!) These are the clearest connections I received, but what are your thoughts?

I decided to look this up because my life is exciting like that. The name of the painting is Primavera(Italian for Spring) by Sandro Botticelli. Here's the introductory blurb from Wiki
Primavera, also known as Allegory of Spring, is a tempera panel painting by Italian Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli. Painted ca. 1482, the painting is described in Culture & Values (2009) as "[o]ne of the most popular paintings in Western art".[1] It is also, according to Botticelli, Primavera (1998), "one of the most written about, and most controversial paintings in the world."[2] While most critics agree that the painting, depicting a group of mythological figures in a garden, is allegorical for the lush growth of Spring, other meanings have also been explored. Among them, the work is sometimes cited as illustrating the ideal of Neoplatonic love. The work is currently in the Galleria degli, Uffizi Museum, Florence, Italy.
Apparently we are uncultured swine for not recognizing this.

:( Definitely worst female character in the show, hopefully Bunny-chan comes back more often
even if she does undo a button or two
. Second half was way hilarious and awesome, and overall I liked the episode. Kiri is really awesome

Finished off Infinite Stratos yesterday. It ended up being entertaining for what it was, although it felt like there was a lot of unrealized potential with the "mecha" side of the show. It is clear that this was more harem with mecha trappings so with properly adjusted expectations I was able to more or less enjoy it. Charles and Laura certainly helped :).

Other stuff:

Kokoro Connect 5-6

I was really disappointed with how episode 5 turned out. It would have been much more interesting if
they had to deal with the fallout of one of them having to die. That would have greatly changed the tone of the series though so I can also see why it didn't happen that way.
The next arc does look promising, depending on how far they take the idea of
having one's innermost desires unleashed
.

Escaflowne 1-2

I've never gotten around to watching this, but better late than never. Off to a good start so far :). Love the art, especially Escaflowne's design.

(Rico having her youthfulness stolen away or her presence taken away from a setting of youth.) I can't find a clear connection, but what are your thoughts?

Thanks for looking it up.

I think the shot is intentionally drawing a parallel between Rico and the painting. In that moment, Fillipo asks her, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" and she's pondering the question. It isn't one she can really answer, since she's never going to grow up.

I think that the popular reading Wikipedia represents for Chloris is probably the most relevant one.
Wikipedia said:
Zephyrus, the biting wind of March, kidnaps and possesses the nymph Chloris, whom he later marries and transforms into a deity; she becomes the goddess of Spring, eternal bearer of life, and is scattering roses on the ground.
The youth and childhood of Chloris is stolen away when Zephyrus transforms her into a goddess. She then becomes a symbol of youth, laden with responsibilities. Similarly, Rico's transformation robs her of her full humanity. She becomes a kind of goddess, but instead of representing life, she brings death.

The way appearances deceive is a common theme in this episode. Moments after this picture, Rico talks about her brother's kindness seconds before the episode cuts to Jean just after he has cut off an assassin's ear in order to extract information. Moreover (and I didn't notice this until just now), earlier on, Rico stands with Fillipo in front of another famous Botticelli painting, The Birth of Venus.
During this screenshot, two assassins are discussing why Rico likely isn't the "little girl" they've been warned to watch out for. Her hands are too clean, showing no signs of the intense training that would be required to be an assassin. They don't realize that she's more than human. Her angelic appearance hides her deadly nature.

There are other readings of these paintings (Wiki mentions Venus as a symbol of Neoplatonic ideals of love rooted in knowledge), but I'm not really sure how they would apply.

I like this fleshed take on it. It especially works with the episode's theme of visual deception that you raised.
I've left the episode with something extra now that you've brought this all up.

Exactly, more Wein! And I agree about the structure, if the formula is set now, it means they have spent an awful lot of time working through Wakana's arc. And although they didn't trivialize it, Sawa's issues do seem relatively scant in comparison.
