Halo |OT8| A Salt on the Control Room

hahahahahaha. This is almost as good as the kid that said Dani didn't know anything about Halo's lore.

If you recall that, then I'm sure you also remember that he had said something incorrect about the lore and I called him on it.

Was I supposed congratulate him or something instead? I don't get it.

100% sure that's my last Reach rank. 2.5 million cR ain't happening. Just can't. I don't know how stephen/noobs/ghaleon/whoeverismorethaneclipse did it.

So in case it wasn't obvious I was at Fan Expo.

The set up was extremely weird. We were playing the E3 build, 8v8. I also just want to say that the TVs we were playing on were at least 52+ inches, and the input lag was really bad. So what I say about certain weapons, specifically the BR and the DMR may be inaccurate.

First game we played was on Adrift. This map doesn't really work for 8v8 because the tight halls make for some cluster fuck plays. Anyways for this game the load out I had was Battle Rifle primary, Magnum secondary and my armor ability was the hard light shield. The hard light shield was pretty interesting to use; it works pretty much as described. Versus the kids that were at the booth it was pretty useful because they would just keep shooting at it while my shield recharged. However when I went up against a guy who was using it I just threw a nade at his feet and it killed him quite easily. So not the armor ability for me.

The next game I got to customize my load out before the game loaded, so I opted for BR, magnum, promethean vision and the perks or whatever they're called that give you a radar while scoped in and one that increases the shield recharge rate. Promethean vision was very useful as we've seen in the videos so far and can be spammed quite easily. However, we were going up against people who were using the hologram and while in promethean vision it's really easy to fall for them. At least in 8v8.

I didn't really find the awareness perk all that useful. When you're in scope you're likely looking at an enemy anyways so it's easy to get distracted. To be fully honest, I never even noticed the radar in the corner while scoped in. I imagine it's more useful while using the sniper, but I never got the chance to use that because...

I played one game on Longbow. This game went by really quickly because our team was absolutely destroying the other one. I only got one ordnance drop, and obviously I chose sniper but I got really bad luck with it. The drop landed right on my teammate who picked up our sniper off spawn, so he got all of my ammo... (We went on to win that game 600-110)

The other armor ability I tried was the thruster pack. I thought it would be similar to evade but it's really different. When it's used you get this visual effect that blurs your screen making it a bit weird to shoot while using it. You also don't go nearly as far as I thought you would. Basically, it's a nerfed evade which I approve of. I wouldn't use it myself though.

Other weapons I got to try were the DMR, sticky detonator, sword, scattershot, and magnum. It's pretty much impossible to use the sticky detonator offensively since you're probably going to get melted before you get the thing to land and explode. It's pretty good if you set it up and play the waiting game though. Scatter shot is really good, but there's this weird bubble area where you're not sure if it's going to be a 1 shot kill or not. And yes, it feels awesome when you get someone and their body disintegrates. No big differences that I noticed with the sword.

DMR was nuts to use on this TV, the lag or something made it feel really sluggish and since it's 1 shot it was very difficult to use. I want to comment on the bloom though since that's a hot topic in Reach. You really don't even notice that it's there. To me it just felt like an indicator to let me know when to take the next shot. To compare it to Reach it feels like it's just above no bloom if that makes sense.

The magnum feels like a mix between the Halo 2 and Reach pistol. It's good pretty good speed and power but it's tough to hit the shots, especially if you're getting shot at while trying to use it.

I think that everyone having sprint worked pretty well. The maps that we played on (Haven, Adrift and Longbow) are pretty big compared to earlier games but having sprint lets you get across the map fairly quick. Longbow in particular was a surprise as I thought it would be a lot bigger based on the footage I saw before hand. However getting from side to side on foot didn't take very long. Sorry, no warthog impressions.

This post has been long enough, but I know there's some things that I'm leaving out or forgetting about. If there's anything you want to know or my impressions on a certain aspect like the menus just ask.

There's usually a few months where there isn't any Halo going on. It's pretty normal, probably extended right now though for SC2 not LoL and they probably don't want to start the older game with the new one coming out so soon. They did that with 3 and reach and I think it killed the popularity.

Can't tell if serious...

...or if actually doesn't know the current state of competitive Halo.

Was the middle text annoying?
I didn't mind it. In some situations it was nice to know I was getting the headshots and grenade kills. I also got 4 triple kills, 1 killing frenzy and 1 wingman during my time with the game and each time those popped up was quite satisfying.

thanks for the great write up :-D.

BR or DMR?

On these TVs, definitely BR. Like I said, the TVs were huge and they made each weapon feel a little differently. The BR felt very fast on these TVs (I was playing on 3 sens) and the DMR felt very sluggish. If the DMR is sluggish though it would make a lot of sense long range.

If people want warthog impressions my buddy went on a 10 kill splatter spree when playing for his first time, Ill get him to post some stuff if you guys are interested.

Can you say anything about the hitboxes? Big/small? How are headshots from behind? Is strongsiding useful?

It sucks compared to SC? That's why I said they're probably extending the hiatus for it being at the actual tournaments until 4 is released and they can figure out their gametypes.

Did they say anything about Halo 4 yet?

While yes he is a gentleman, I think you mean he's a professional. But we do show notes for the podcast, you know this, you've been on. But yea, Bravo is a pro.

Yeah that's probably a better word. I do know about the notes, but I never printed anything out for it. I was thinking those were separate notes, like the IGN article or something.

It was terrible the first game, but by game 3 I was getting used to it. Went 17-3 and won a poster for having the highest score of all 16 players. :D
Congrats! That's gotta be a pretty rad feeling.

Hitboxes seemed fine. Headshots from behind were not hard to hit at all. The kids I was playing against never tried to strongside and I never found myself in a situation where I felt like trying. Sorry!

BR impressions? It or the DMR? Did you see the Carbine in action?
Feels like the Halo 3 BR with hitscan. It was great. Kill times seemed pretty good - comparable to Halo 3 I would say. Didn't see a lot of Carbine, but I did hear a lot of positive things about it. Personally I didn't bother with the Carbine because I know we've already been told it's been changed since that build.

No sweat, man. Thanks for the information.

SC more competitive than Halo, and it looks like it's going to stay that way with 4. Truth hurts, dealwithit.

That's an interesting point to bring up about competition. So let's analyze the facts!

LoL currently on the block, teams agreed to split the purse and fuck around for the finals.

Halo currently off, never cheated the system.

Halo > LoL in competitiveness.

Best part about it was that I was playing on the only TV that people in line could see, so basically everyone was watching me. It was an awesome feeling. When I got the triple and frenzy that game I heard people in the crowd making comments. :)

So instead, one of the games they DO have on circuit has a finals where the teams have already decided not to be competitive AT ALL. The fact that this isn't getting through to you is mind-boggling.

EDIT: fu'd

That's...the teams. Not the game...

MLG looks packed compared to the last one I went to with just Halo. Halo became a small joke they put in the corner at the second or third MLG after they started playing SC with the Korean pros IIRC.

Unless it overtakes SC in spectators, I doubt Halo will ever be mainstage again.

That's definitely the people playing the game, not the game.

Just because no one ever decided to just play Team Slayer in Oddball or Flag doesn't mean the game that draws the bigger crowd should be put aside.

Playing Infection and it is weird. Everyone is getting out of the map. But when I follow them I get a dead space count down.

... Minecraft's block system would be pretty great for Forge

Eh I don't know, fits perfectly for the clone game I played but i don't think blocks would work for Halo's art style at all.

This clone game is pretty good though shockingly. I might try to remake some Halo 4 maps lol

Its not out yet, its called Murder Miners, devs are actually pretty confident though and are working with Egoraptor on a game too.

Should be out soon though the game seems really stable. Also it doesn't really matter to me but the game does have full button mapping.

From a design standpoint Minecraft leaves a great deal to be desired. While on the surface its great and rudimentary shapes can be built easily where it really falls to bits is Movement around the world.

Slopes and curves a pretty huge omissions and while not suitable to minecraft not having them in forge would be a BIG hurdle.

Something Akin to FC3 Map Edition is much better with a simple terrain and the ability to extrude it in virtually every location.

Forge is an odd systems its inception was more focused on Editing rather than Building but that has evolved. Hopefully with a solid MP halo title out the door 343i Can sit back and focus more on evolving features like Theatre and Forge to becoming more in line with other games.

Theatre has potential to be evolved into a real Halo TV type system. Live Stream Games and add the ability to view games in progress.

Forge could evolve to support not only MP but FF and/or SpOps. Real Terrain Editing and some basic AI Spawn points would be amazing.

I know people give 343i a lot of stick because they feel in some aspects Halo 4 is lacking but honestly I think for a Studio starting fresh on what essentially is a virtual reboot of the franchise they have done a more than admirable job. If this is the feature set of Halo 4 then H5 H6 with the potential capacity and power increase of NextBox could becoming mind blowing.

And to be fair, Reach was Jam packed with content compared to the majority of other games at the time. Its only in the last year games have been SP/MP/Survival/Theatre all at once.

After spending a good several hours boosting with friends we all finally got the last set of DLC achievements in Reach (the Anniversary ones + the 3 added Defiant ones). It bears repeating again how horrible the MP Achievements have been in previous games, and how happy I am with what they look like in Halo 4. Please don't fuck it up with that game's DLC :(

Wait. Let me get this straight. MLG has a tournament where the finalists decided to essentially split their money and throw the game? In a situation where one of them is supposed to win and take it all?

And they want to be viewed as a real league?

Why do they still have a playlist in any Halo game?
