Halo |OT8| A Salt on the Control Room

I hope they nerf it in Halo 4 so it does something that significiantly reduces the apex tactical advantage.

Beautiful. Any way you can confirm the Plasma Launcher's existence/nonexistence in Halo 4 or at least the number of handheld Covenant weapons?

Who needs a map when you can fly over it? Innovation! Fun! It's all wrapped together!

Do Gandhi and Best Man ever do their show on Twitch anymore?

Bringing it back before H4, Reach is dead and we don't have constant H4 news to do a full show on so we can't do much. We may do one if MLG announces Halo 4 is at Dallas, but it's probaly Black Ops at that event if I had to guess.

Do you at least understand where we're coming from?

It's NOT fun. It's frustrating. It might be balanced, agaisnt the super powerful vehicles from Halo 3, but it wasn't FUN.

Why a laser is necesary vs Paper Mache vehicles in Reach I have no idea.

It was/is brilliantly fun... when your team has it.
Not so much when you randomly explode.

This is the week, guys. I am getting my hoodie this week. I am so excited. You cannot believe how excited I am.

The entire magazine is well-written and worth picking up. EDGE tells it straight -- i.e. their remark about the community's reaction to Halo 4's multiplayer. I love their willingness to point out troublesome areas, unlike other magazines that pretend every game is the Next Big Thing. If a publication as reserved as EDGE is excited about Halo 4, my hype is exponentially increased.
Edge and Kill Screen are the only gaming magazine I am interested in. Both have great features.

Gotcha. I was never a huge huge fan, but I would definitely watch an episode about the new Suddoth league.

I know it's not the right use of the meme, but I love how it's Arbiter explaining things to a bewildered Noble 6.

Yeah, people tend to forget the Arbiter we all know and love was responsible for glassing Reach so I thought it'd be hilarious to have them together. I can hear Buzz's voice actor chatting with Six about how he's destroying the planet completely casually :lol

Risen, the point your missing is though, while you have the laser, your team has free reign to circle theyre base and spawn kill them. How can they go get a vehicle when those vehicles are outside of theyre spawns? Even if your laser runs out, you have that vehicle dominance and are garunteed a new laser long before they break out of theyre spawn. I think your right in saying it can be nerfed, but if you nerf the laser but keep strong vehicles, how does the vehicle/ infantry dynamic work? Might be better to work on better balance there than have weapons like the Laser being 'wildcards' which have 3 shots but otherwise leave infantry exposed. Meh I think it would be cleaner to take vehicle combat back to Halo 1 basics and delete the Laser.

SMH... I am not missing that point... that while you have the laser, your team has free reign to utilize vehicles... or more accurately that it MAXIMIZES the use of vehicles.

I just don't have a problem with that being maximized, particularly if more attention is paid to the following:

If you reduce the shots in the laser, and then increase the spawn time of the laser, and THEN ensure that the spawn point is equidistant from bases but NOT in the power position on the map... THAT changes the entire dynamic and actually balances the weapon. Which can be further modified by vehicle spawn times.

You do NOT have that vehicle dominance NECESSARILY, if a laser runs out - there were power drains, missile pods, plasma pistols... etc - all of which become much more important.

I am emphatically NOT talking about nerfing the laser... I am keeping it very strong, as it should be, and modifying it's spawn time, location, and ammount of ammo... the laser is NOT a wild card... nor is any power weapon. It's a power up to fight over that should hurt when lost.

In doubles... why does the developer decrease the ammo count in the sniper? In rockets...?

It reduces the length of time the weapon is dominant and emphasizes the selection process of when and how they are used. They don't become balance breaking unless they have too many shots, are in the wrong location, or spawn too frequently.

It's the same with lasers... or any other power weapon in Halo.

It really is jarring when you think about it that way... you wonder if he ever regretted that?

Risen, how do you feel about it on the online environment, more specifically the latency area? I know in some games of Reach and all of my Halo 3 BTB games, there is no tiny red beam letting you know that you are milliseconds away from death. One reason why I'm not a fan of the laser was because latency to host usually meant the red beam never showed on my screen.

If a laser has to be in, would anyone oppose the laser having the following traits:
  • 4 shots
  • Larger presence on the screen
  • Tiny red beam replaced by a beam rifle esque beam
  • More charge time/more time "lazing" target

It's hard for me to believe for a second that Black Ops would be at Dallas over Halo.
Especially with Sundance's tweet asking about teams for a small Halo tournament.

You might be right, though I don't know how any spot on a map can be 'equidistant from bases but NOT in the power position', I still feel as though the laser gives the team who get it early a STUPID advantage, and I say that as someone who abused that advantage. It was annoying for the reason that it killed vehicle combat and replaced it with a dynamic where the team who controlled the laser controlled the vehicles. You seem ok with that, I wasn't a fan of it. Controlling all the vehicles felt cheap and easy, and on the flipside, it felt bullshit that the guy who got lucky and snuck away with laser at the start of the match is now in such a power position.

I would much rather go back to the Halo 1 style of sandbox where both teams are free to use vehicles and Infantry can also deal with those vehicles effectively.

Again you could be right in that by modifying spawns and attributes the dynamic can be changed. I think its fair to say that right now this is theoretical and we just will not know. :S

What if there was a power weapon (let's called it super donkey balls gun) that could effectively make most of the other power weapons useless for the team that doesn't have the super donkey balls gun. That way the team that does have the super donkey balls gun can still use the other power weapons to dominate the opposing team even more even though they were already good enough to acquire the super donkey balls gun.
The super donkey balls gun is not a weapon that is especially effective at destroying a buttload of people but it can destroy their tools making them an easy prey for the team that can still use the other power weapons.

And by other power weapons I mean vehicles.
And by super donkey balls gun I mean the Spartan Laser.

Just replace it with a Plasma Launcher already and be done with it.

Challenges better get a huge update in 4. I love challenges, but they have got repetitive, boring, and in many cases not worth the points for the hassle.

I figured at this point in Reach's life cycle, with Halo 4 bearing down, the Reach challenges would go the way of Gears XP weekends and be all out crazy high.

They may as well.

Although no matter how bad Halo 4 may be, I will never
ever ever ever ever ever ever ever
go back to Reach.

I remember the Gears 2 25x XP weekends right before Gears 3 came out

and Monster brings up a good point, that Halo 4 will break the cycle of "Meh, the last Halo was better". No matter what happens, it won't be Reach, and thus is an improvement.

Gun was too weak, you would need to go into the fundamentals of how vehicle combat works to really balance out a lack of laser.

Remove Boost, make seated Spartans more vulnerable (but make the vehicles themselves invulnerable), make Nades flip vehicles, just go copy Halo 1 and be done with it. :p

But lets say it is worse then Reach. No way it could be worse then Reach, but if it was. No, I have complete trust that it will be better, but what if it isn't. The horror, the horror, the horror.

Honestly, just give up on Halo, move on and wait a couple of years for any new hotness/ Halo 5.

Oh, it could definitely be worse than Reach. I've planned for that.

I can play Halo 3 for the rest of my days.

That's like rolling around naked in the snow and then jumping into a jacuzzi.
It must be done. At the very least, Halo 4's midnight launch will be amazing. My first Halo launch, too.

I'm still not sure where to preorder from. Gonna be gamestop by default but a Microsoft Store opened up in the same area. Do they have any sweet swag?

It would be nice to see a 4x credit weekend (or higher) to build hype for Halo 4 coming out. But I'm just a
currently unemployed
gamer nerd. I'm no marketing genius.

You can still do one like once a month. There's enough news. We do a podcast once every 2-3 weeks and they're over 1.5 hrs each. Do it up son!

$25 credit towards your next purchase if you preorder from MS store. Plus whatever midnight launch stuff they're doing because surely they're doing something.

The other side of that coin is hitting someone or something with that laser and not killing them, because of latency... that happened to me MUCH more often than not being aware of when the other team had the laser and could use it at any moment.
