Wii U Thread - Now in HD!

Here, I was working on this when the thread got closed. Put this in the OP instead!

Welcome to the next generation of gaming. Officially announced at Nintendo E3 2011 Press Conference, the Wii U is posed to take on two very different markets: the casual market and the core gamer market. This console is designed to cater to everyone. The addition of a tablet-like game pad will create a paradigm shift with asymmetric gameplay, just as its predecessor disrupted the traditional gaming market. Nintendo is positioning three pillars for Wii U: Gaming, Entertainment and Social Networking.

Wii U Features

nintendonetwork.png

Nintendo Network is Nintendo's new online infrastructure, in the same vein as Playstation Network or XBOX Live.

It has been confirmed that the Wii U is account-based, and each player in the family will have their own account. One Wii U console can support up to 12 different accounts. Wii U will also have an eShop, that is rumored to include applications and books, in addition to the confirmed ability to download full retail games on launch day.

miiverse-4.png

MiiVerse is Nintendo's proposed social network for the Wii U, that will gradually become available on Nintendo 3DS, Internet Browsers, and Smart Phones. It is also future compatible, so all future Nintendo consoles will support MiiVerse. MiiVerse is the first screen you see when you turn on the Wii U console, and it displays your household's Miis, your friends' Miis and Miis from all around the world gathering around tiles which represent the titles that you play and the titles trending globally for Wii U. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata confirmed it will take 30 minutes for your messages to be sent due to moderating, but it is unknown if this will affect messages send to people on your friends list.

This thread definitely is hype-inducing... But I'm still waiting for the 2013 lineup to decide whether to buy or not...

I'm going to be waiting until TTT2 comes out for it before I make a decision, but the console itself is probably going to be pretty cool.

It really should be OT 1(well just OT to be more precise) shouldn't it? The community thread was a community thread, not an OT. Details.... DETAILS!!!

Skiesofwonder

Walruses, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers and badgers.
Sept. 13th seems so far away, especially considering my first wave of tests hit right before then. :/

I got to play one. New Mario looked really nice, as did P-1000.

Batman looked and ran like ass.

Love me some NSMB2, though.

Tech GAF:
Is something preventing "USB hard drive for external storage" to be an USB key/stick?
I plan to buy something like a 32GB or 64GB one and for all the system lifespan.

Even with the GamePad you can have traditional controls, though. It feels just like a normal controller but wider (not heavier, mind you).

Doubt it'll feel like a normal controller though. Seems like it'll strain on the hands after a while just like the 3DS. Can't say until I hold it though I guess.

Another new OT?

oooh NOW I get it!

New Wii U OT 2
What's the next one? New Wii U OT U? *wink wink*
:D

So, question, everyone:

To all you launch day-buyers - will you be buying one IN STORE or get it from amazon, etc?

I haven't held it longer than an hour either so I guess I can't say if it'll strain... first impressions were that it felt natural though.

Interesting... I didn't know about the pro controller.

So this console's actually gonna have games with traditional controls?

Most third party games are going to have traditional controls. They probably won't try too hard on thinking of ideas for the second screen. I think most will just have a map or inventory on the screen so they can also utilize off screen play. The creative ideas will normally come from first parties as seen in ZombiU and P100.

This is going to be the first time picking up a console at a midnight launch.

I might bite, but I think I'll wait a year or two before getting one. I really want to see what the software is like before committing.

Exactly. I miss community. *Sigh*

I don't. If people can keep their calm, being in Gaming Side should bring in more than the usual posters who displayed first signs of mental derangement in the Comunity Thread.

I'm really looking forward to how NOE is going to fuck up the launch this time. There's bound to be something. Maybe the WiiU won't come with a power cable, or they delay the european launch of the eshop... there's lots of opportunity for NOE to show their incompetence and shady business practices.

Oh and yea, ZombiU and Rayman Legends are going to be my launch games.

Same thing. Unless they require some proprietary thing ... which they won't since that's a Sony move.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy an external HHD, though? (+more space)

Most likely in store, but I wouldn't be against Amazon (though shipping on the week of Thanksgiving worries me a bit).

To anybody that has tried a Wii U - is the D-pad good?

One thing I loved about the Wii was the D-pad. 2D games felt great to play on Wii.

The last round of hardware impressions made the WiiU sound like a poorly optimized hotbed of problems. I think I'll wait and make sure the consoles aren't RROD-ing on people. It'll be the first time I've waited on a Nintendo system, but I'm sure I'll be plenty busy from the usual Thanksgiving Steam sales and such. Now if P-100 is ready at launch, waiting will be more difficult. And NSMBU looks quite appetizing as well -- the first time a NSMB game has captured my imagination, thanks to the new World-esque backgrounds and proper HD.

Nintendo isn't Microsoft. Their consoles are built to last. Unoptimized code is common during demo's and ports on new hardware.

I believe you'll need a bit more than that.

I think 64GB will be fine for me. I mainly only play Nintendo games, I do not see first party games installs before at least the second half of the system lifespan. And I buy it retail to be able to sell it sometimes after. Really for the space, I think I will be Ok with 64GB. I assume it means it is Ok for the tech question, thank you!

I hope the release schedule for their first year is better thought out than the 3DS. I don't want to go through a period where half the time nothing comes out but a light helping of shovelware. Then again I am in Europe and well, you know how Nintendo treats us.

Nintendo treats Europe like royalty compared to the Americas recently...

If I wanted more than 64GB, it will definitely be cheaper. But I just checked, 64GB is ~35€.
What bother me the most, is the extra power input required for external HDD. It sucks.
