During Nintendo Direct, Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino has announced the sixth episode of Professor Layton, and the last one of the second trilogy.

From Andriasang:

This latest 3DS Layton game is Hershel Layton's final adventure -- not necessary the last Layton game.

Nice to see they decided to calm down on the yearly iteration, I wonder if it'll help sales. Layton 5 didn't really set the charts on fire :/

I'd be more excited, but Layton 4 wasn't that great (seriously Level 5, enough with the sliding puzzles, they're awful). I'll wait till Layton 5 comes to europe to make an opinion.

I'm replaying Layton 5 right now and loving it (picked it up last Sept when I got my 3DS).

Shame it's the last game in the series (I'm pretty sure he said レイトンシリーズ (Layton series) and not レイトン教授 (Professor Layton), but I'll listen again), but all good things must end, and six games is a great length for a series.

To be honest, I expected that they would change things up a little after the rather long period of time between Layton 5 and 6. But instead it looks pretty much exactly the same apart of slightly nicer graphics.

Judging by the trailers it also seems that Layton 5 and 6 are less focused on brain puzzles than it's predecessors and more on block puzzles and the likes.

The twist will be the advanced civilization was actually made up of sticks and rocks.

Or maybe that it was all a mass hallucination.

I wasn't expecting this to be announced until after Layton/Wright shipped. But I guess that's finally nearing completion.

Me as well, but I guess the crossover is coming before the end of the year.

Name is not so great.

Yeah, sorry, it's just a translation from Japanese.

Looks nice. Are those still 3d models? I can't tell so that's good.

This. They are 3D, but they improved them from the Mask of Miracles.

I was really expecting another trilogy set after Lost Future since its ending implies that. Of course we may still see one, just with Layton taking a back seat role.

Which is a shame since Layton himself is one the best features of the series.

And day one for this game.

day1 for sure. I'll buy the Mask of miracle day one next autumn here in Europe and I'll wait for this one, hopefully in 2013 also here.

I made a mistake, it is エルシャール・レイトン‘s (Hershel Layton's) last game.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.

Makes sense, there's still the Layton Brothers title to come. Still, actually saying that Hershel him-self won't have anymore games is a pretty big thing.

Is it the last *game* or the last *adventure*? The latter would be curious because it's still a prequel, isn't it?

It does cross my mind that at some point they need to address what happens to Emmy between this game and Curious Village. Perhaps she heads off on her own and becomes the focal character?

He says 今作で六作目、エルシャール・レイトン最後の冒険となります, which means "This is the sixth installment, and will be Hershel Layton's final adventure".

Strange that he says game and not adventure.

I'm still hoping he just means final adventure in this trilogy. Layton wouldn't be Layton without Layton.

It's a little surprising they're announcing this before we get more on PLvsAA, but I guess it's not that much a shocker - I think they did something similar with PLvsAA and Mask of Miracle.

So, is it time to start praying that Layton has a son or Luke will carry on to give me more Layton games?

:(

When's Layton vs. Phoenix Wright coming out? I need that crossover in my veins.
I would assume TGS will have some new information.

I'm pretty sure back when Last Specter was announced they said they'd be doing a third trilogy as well. Given how Unwound Future ended, I'd think that
Luke would most likely take the protagonist's role (probably with a time skip and him reuniting with Layton, but he only acts as an advisor)
keep things fresh.

Damn, sooner than I expected by a long shot. Might import this if there's a download version.

Looks like they're also putting out a "Plus" version of Miracle Mask with some minor new things on the eShop.
