So, a bit of information about the Nazo no Kanojo X OVA -- the two new characters that show up are in fact cameoing from Riichi Ueshiba's first manga series, Discommunication, all the way from 1991, and they're voiced by two old-school seiyuu to boot (Hiro Yuuki and Megumi Hayashibara). Quite the nice little bonus for this bonus episode.

You can do better. Much better.

Like those two beach episodes, the episode wasn't bad when it's not actually dealing with the terrible arc. It's a training episode, a pretty boring training episode though.

I'm hopeful, but my expectations are starting to slip. I don't think the cast is as strong as Steins;Gate. The protagonist in the demo wasn't someone I could root for the way I got behind Okabe, though his development could change that.
From what I've read, we should definitely keep our expectations in check for that one...

No Kuroyuki hime but it seems we has a older equivalent of her. Scarlet rain always make things better.

Regarding the lack of clearance sale prices for anime disks at UK retailers - I'd imagine the main reason why you don't see this is because the UK distributors have a habit of keeping a hold of their excess stock themselves. They tend to sell older stuff at clearance-type prices directly at events like MCM Expo where there's a critical mass of potential customers rather than trying to push it out via traditional retailers. I'd presume it's more profitable for them that way, rather than having to deal with middle-men as well.

Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian OVA

Hey, if you were expecting something like the fantastic episode 9 (which can and should be watched on its own) then you can forget about this OVA which was nothing more but another lackluster, boring and ultimately predictable episode of this mediocre GAINAX series.

I figured they were a cameo from one the manga author's other work. Discommunication sounds interesting but hardly any of it's been translated. :(

Just in case you still don't have enough anime-related credit cards in your wallet, here comes a Fate/Zero credit card from Jaccs. The design hasn't been unveiled yet, so it looks like we'll have to wait a few weeks to see what it looks like, though it seems like there will be three variations, one each for Saber, Archer, and Rider. Or maybe they'll be on the design together; I'm not sure which it is.

Thanks for the anti-hype. No, seriously, it's good to keep everything in check because I hadn't heard anything about the source material.

Alright so here's the final image:

Anyways, I promise to stop spamming these drawings in here so often. I'm sure there are more than a few people who find this to be OT, or distracting.

Thanks again, Extollere for completing this work!

It certainly doesn't hurt that they offered actual tangible goods for signing up for this card.
People who become card members by September 20 will be entered into a drawing for 200 sets of special moviegoer passes for the first two Puella Magi Madoka Magica films. The passes were originally exclusive to the first Anime Contents Expo event, which was held in March.

In addition, each member will receive a randomly distributed "original premium card" every month; there are eight different cards that will be given away starting in October. People who collect all eight cards will receive an exclusive mounting for them. The cards and mounting feature an original design that cannot be bought or won elsewhere.
Also, I love the hilarity of the sample card using Madoka's father's name.

could not take anyone that had those CC seriously
would expect them to have a bad credit rating from spending it all on anime stuff

Can't wait to see the first episode of the anime.[/QUOTE]

I'm interested to see if they make it crazy, or if they open it more like Haruhi or something. I really want to see what they're going to do with this.

Are there any English-language reviews of the game around? I've flicked through Mk2 but the nuance is beyond my poor Japanese and there are so few reviews it's hard to say if there's any consensus. People don't seem to like the ending that much or the Twitter stuff in the game (but that presumably won't be in the anime in the same way), and there's a few people complaining it's not like Chaos Head or Steins Gate - which is only a bonus to me! - but it's hard to separate out the valid criticisms from the butthurt.

Due to the lighting and the background art it really looks like the character and the background are from too completely different styles of art, with the background looking CG and the character appearing to be 2D. To further add to the unnaturalness of the image the characters moves without any sense of weight of friction, making her appear weightless and unreal. It has no sense of reality to it and appears wholly artificial.

Ok, thank you. Different styles of art and having one be CG and the other is 2D are definitely valid complaints. I thought there was something with the motions themselves I was missing.

I would actually get an Archer card if they released this in the USA.

FS/N Archer would be even better. Ultimate Spending Works

Stealing my jokes from the IRC channel are we?

It's pretty much always gaming-side.
For the UK OT is far more dangerous. Stay out of gypsy threads. Also the language barrier between English and American can lead to some difficulties.

The problem is that the initial costs of producing materials for releasing shows to just the UK is completely out-of-line with the size of the potential market. Blu-Ray is still expensive to master, has high minimum orders quantities, the licensing costs Sony charge per disk-master are still ludicrous, and there's also the mandatory BBFC charges on top of that. The only reason that Kaze gets away with releasing stuff on BD is that they're mastering these releases in France - they're being subsidised by the larger markets in France and other European countries in which Kaze deal. Manga themselves can't really afford it on anything beyond movies at this point because most of the TV releases they flirted with in the past failed to so much as break even.

Also, you're never going to see anime priced at the same level of mainstream TV boxsets, as retail is the primary revenue stream for local distributors (and for the Japanese licensors monetising outside of Japan) , whereas it's a secondary one for mainstream TV. It gives them a lot more flexibility when it comes to pricing, as does the larger market.

Huh. Of the two HMVs I go into on a semi-regular basis, one has the anime BDs in with the World Cinema (though it's really 90% anime anyway), and the other has it's own anime subsection. I guess it's down to the local store management rather than dictated centrally. It's not like the UK distributors have any control over that (or the number of copies of a title these stores tend to order, or if they'll order a show at all - the supermarkets weren't even interested in Summer Wars!).

Well that makes sense and I suppose it doesn't help that most anime doesn't appear of the terrestrial (or should I say freeview now?) channels.

Well HMV online bundles BD anime with martial arts. The DVDs in store tend to have their own section with seems to move around in the stores I sometimes check. Not having a BD player myself I don't really look out for the BDs as much.

But, hey, I think we are getting pretty much the cheapest Madoka Magica BD release in the world, though the rumblings are that it might not hang around the shelves very long...

That may explain the sudden disappearance of Cowboy Bebop from one HMV store. One day they had a big pile of box. The next nothing and I really doubt they sold them all judging from the piles of everything else they had in store. This habit of withdrawing stock seems rather backwards.

Kaoru must be loaded to have all that equipment in his house. Otherwise, I wonder how the team will be once Araki leaves for a bit?
They couldnt score without him this episode
.

Largely the rest was kind of decent though a bit boring since its just watched old footage of balll hunting, goal hunting, and tactics discussion. Hope the tournament has a rematch against Yoin.

I hope winter has more sports anime, next season is just two soccer ones that have been continuing (Ginga e Kickoff and this Area no Kishi)...

Withdraw stock, pay $2 to ship it back and forth plus $1 for the actual disc.
Make a habit of clearancing stock, and good luck ever inducing your fanbase to pay more than $50/series again.

There's an old truism that your product is worth exactly how much people will pay for it. For something like anime where 90%+ of the value is entirely notional, destroying that notion seems to be fatal; the anime market in the west has been trained to value anime, all anime, because it's anime and big eyes are their own little shibboleth. (and is all equally so, barring a few French, American, and Chinese coproductions!)
Since almost all shows are seen as substitute goods for each other, elasticity is extremely high for any given disc. However, due to the presentation as a social importance and the collector/database animal impulse that seems to be widespread among fans, elasticity is extremely LOW for anime as a category; the broader the definition of a good the less elastic the demand is, and for the average fanboy "anime" is defined as broadly as the man in the street would define "TV and movies", if not entertainment altogether. (Outside of an extremely limited core fanbase of perhaps 10,000, there is also almost no elasticity for the mass market, who if interested wants his Adult Swim favorite or sufficiently badass ninja cover art and will brook no substitutions.)

In layman's terms, there's effectively a set amount of money available to buy anime. Cutting prices comes at the expense of a genre competitor rather than increasing the size of the market.
And the final kicker, why it's suicidal now in a way that it isn't in most other fields:
There's perhaps three or four major record shops still in business. Fewer major anime DVD publishers. If you are one of them, rather than attracting more spending, firesale mode just means you have to mark down the rest of your products to compete with your own bomba until you're shipping little Johnny Weebo four discs per lawn mowed rather than one, at four times the overhead cost.
