Weekend Confirmed Episode Whimsy | Let's All Love Loving Things

Silly aspects to their arguments about the Wii U aside I don't understand what people expect them to do. Should they feign positivity despite obviously thinking that the Wii U doesn't seem to have any particular hook releasing when it is.

I basically agree with them. Don't see how the machine is going to attract people with a year window or so till the next gen consoles hit. 3rd party stuff won't help it, that stuff will be hitting the other 2 HD consoles and I don't see there being a flood of big Nintendo 1st party titles.

That leaves the faithful who are happy to have the machine because of its potential alone. Doesn't seem like a big group of people to me.

They could just as easily have said that without stretching to come up with numerous complaints that made no sense. It would have sounded more professional had they said "I have no interest in this system and hope it bombs miserably."

Haven't downloaded it yet, but not liking what I'm reading here. Did devil's advocate Garnett or Cannata not show up today or something?

They sound really unprofessional. They don't talk about Nintendo intentions retaking the hardcore audience. They don't compare it with Microsoft new focus on casual and media audiences.
They assume it is game over because the cod players play on the 360 while ignoring that many cod hardcore players are a bit like CS players they care absolutely nothing about other hardcore games
If they don't feel inspired with the wii u well they just shoud avoid the whole console as topic.

Listen to late 2006 1up yours episodes and then listen to this. I love Garnett as a host, but Weekend Confirmed just doesn't work without an entertaining supporting cast.

I haven't heard the episode yet but to hear them complain about something prematurely, knock something because it's not what they feel it should be, or different from the Xbox 360 is not surprising.

I'm a huge techie and high graphics lover but I can also appreciate a console that doesn't give the cutting edge. At the end of the day, it's about the game. The console hasn't even been released yet so we can truly speak to its potential.

(paraphrasing) Why is this system getting all the ports from everything else? Why is the system getting year old games?

What game is it getting that is a year old? Also, if it didn't come with the big hits from this year and this coming holiday, would it not have been criticized too? One of the main purposes of them doing this is so they can show that they can have most of the big titles you have on your other consoles while providing the 1st and 3rd party Nintendo titles you love.

I'm also surprised with Jeff C. because of the type of games he normally like are purely about gameplay. When you buy board games (which can cost more than console games), you're not looking for it to provide a out of this world design or graphics that put other board games to shame. The number one thing you are looking for in a board game is the gameplay and finding enjoyment in it. That's what games are for and I feel bad that some gaming journalists can sometimes get easily jaded against things that do not make them jump out their seat. Sadly, when you play and see it all, it does make it alittle harder to enjoy stuff in the same way that others do.

I've personally played the Wii U for a few hours and loved it. My wife played it and loved it. We preordered our Deluxe version Thursday afternoon and can't wait for it to come out. If you find enjoyment in something, it doesn't matter how advance or ground breaking.

Sidenote: $300 is not a lot for a new console, even if it's something that is not uber- high tech.

I think part of the Wii U's problem is that it doesn't come with nearly enough 360/PS3 games. Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Darksiders is a good start... but that's just way too little. EA has a better line-up for the Vita than the Wii U, with FIFA, Madden and NFS. No Medal of Honor 2 or Dead Space 3.

You might say this is because it's a launch system but by the time developers would have caught up then the new systems will be on the horizon, and at that point the number of ports will drop, not increase, simply for technical reasons.

Nintendo's attempt to win over third party content makers that established themselves on the 360 and PS3 is simply too little and too late.

Andrea, Jeff M and Garnett are just a bad combination.

Andrea only likes to talk about Borderlands and Mass Effect and Jeff M mostly talks about indie games and iPhone shovelware. The show already suffers sometimes from too narrow tastes, especially when Christian Spicer and Andrew Yoon are absent.

I have not been on the Andrea hating bandwagon but she really needs to branch out to keep things interesting as a guest.

Got about 30 mins into it, just a meh episode, very little chemistry, will skip the rest.

Gonna listen to some old GFW Radio episodes instead.

The Elite Xbox 360 did come with a HDMI cable for a period of time right when it launched. and the 20gb Pro came with component cables, but yeah for most of this generation both the 360 and PS3 have only come with composite cables.

Only half an hour in and I'm already annoyed beyond belief.

Gaming journalism is a joke for the most part.
Nothing has changed from the time all of these people were scoffing at the Wii and the DS...

Giggling at every single feature or game that is being brought up. Really?

Complaining that the system will not be able to play audio CDs? FFS...

Laughing about how awesome 4 played COD will be on this Nintendo system because having some sort of friend codes simply is not conductive for a multiplayer game at all?

What the fucking shit is this?
Yeah, I was only ever to play Mario Kart Wii in 3-player multiplayer as I only had two buddies on my friend list, and thus I was never was able to play with random people at all! SMH.

It's not just these people either. Listening to some other podcasts as well bring up all sorts of bias, stupidity and misinformation.

Guess I'll just continue to ignore these guys, along with the bulk of the "gaming press".

Perhaps Jeff Cannata's girlfriend needs to apply for a job at Nintendo for them to get get some positive discussion going about the Wii U...

Seems weird to call it a timed exclusive. There is a skoche more to it than that.

I figured you guys were just being nintendo fan nuts but man, these guys really dislike this thing.

Im buying it for that Lego game and future Nintendo titles. Guess I should wait and hope Zelda is a timed exclusive.

I would say no bluray is a big deal for a couple of reasons.

1) Nintendo isn't just trying to sell the WiiU to people who already have a PS3 or 360. They want to sell it to people who only have a Wii or nothing.

2) The device isn't necessarily going to be hooked up to the same TV as the Bluray player in the house if the house has one.

3) Their all in one place App that goes through all the TV and Movie sources you subscribe to but it doesn't work with your physical collection? That makes absolutely no sense.

Anyway, I haven't listened to the podcast yet, but if they complained about COD and AC3 ports that's just dumb. Having those games at or very near launch is exactly what Nintendo should be getting. Go nuts complaining about last years leftovers like Batman Trine 2 and but same day releases?

Most people just use netflix for their media needs, and, despite not having the ability to play DVDs, Wii is the most popular console for netflix. Nintendo knows that and they are knocking media streaming right out of the park right off the bat with TVii. That is going to be a big deal for media streamers.

Only half an hour in and I'm already annoyed beyond belief.

I liked when they bring up that WiiU comes with an HDMI cable and say that Nintendo has finally entered the 21st century. Are they saying Sony and MS are still in the 20th century? They were also upset that it doesn't come with a wiimote or a traditional controller because some games are too hard to play with the gamepad according to them.

Batman
Mass Effect 3 will be close by the time it comes out too

You're right about Batman. I played the Armored Edition and it was horrible a month ago. Hopefully, they fix up that horrid framerate before it's released. Mass Effect came out this past March and should be out on the WiiU around Launch.

It's not too late for Metal of Honor and Dead Space 3, which both come out next year. Madden isnt that good on the Vita and Fifa is a sad loss (there's always next year). I guess they figured that annual sport franchises wouldn't be worth chasing because most of those audiences have already bought their sports title for the platform they already own. NFS would be nice bit like the other sports title, they will already find their audience on the platform people own (I, for one, am getting it for my PS3 and maybe my Vita). Sadly, NFS doesn't have the same cache of a CoD or Assassin's Creed. I think the third party developers ported the titles they feel would sell the best :/

For a new system (not yet released) that already have such a nice, rounded variety of launch titles, I seriously doubt that they are late with winning over third party developers. Devs love money and I seriously doubt that the Wii U sales will disappoint. I think Nintendo learned from the Wii that they need their third party devs in order to keep their console relevant. Devs also realize that the Wii has the biggest install and is a name that resonate with gamers, casual and hardcore alike.

Maybe Garnett has a problem similar to Arthur Gies. Your opinions are not wrong most of cases, but your tone provokes antipathy.

With Nintendo that is a widespread issue in gaming media. It´s hard find people who are not going to "Wii U is for babies blo blo blo" narrow mind talk.

Overall, good episode last week, bad episode this week. It´s a cosmic balance.

Wow, that WiiU segment was painful to listen to. Fragmenting the userbase? Just like the iPhone (dozens and dozens of models and configurations!), Ipad (3G? Wifi? how big?), Kindle, 360, PS3, ect? I almost stopped the podcast when it was brought up that NOT PLAYING AUDIO CDS was a downfall of the system. I'm willing to bet that they don't care that a Macbook Air or an Ipad doesn't play CDs!

Just a horrible, unbalanced look at this. Please, Garnett, if this is the best you can do on a topic, its probably better to not even bother. Just let Andrea talk about Borderlands, and let Jeff talk about whatever iOS game he is currently playing.

Their controller complaints are really off base. What was the last system to come with multiple controllers, the SNES? On top of that, I think Wii U might be the only console ever to allow you to use the previous generation's controller. I know all these guys have Wii remotes laying around as will a lot of people looking at a Wii U.

I understand complaining about the system's specs, but they just couldn't stop themselves from ripping on anything associated with it for no good reason. What's the point.

Ok, so I finally listened to it. Garnett at times attempted to play Devils Advocate, but he couldn't resist the power of Jeff to just bitch and laugh about every single feature. It was amazing to hear. It wasn't just that nothing on the Wii U interested him but he just had to be snarky about every little thing, to belittle it down to insignificance.

One of the things that proved to me that they really aren't trying to educate listeners as just want to bitch about things they don't like was the comment about how being able to play CoD on the screen alone was stupid. I think their words were "yeah cause you'd want to play on that small screen". Any mention of the fact that this could be great for sharing the TV or in bed or anything was just ignored. And the concept of options seemed to escape them.

Near the end Jeff did start to mention that he thinks his negativity is due to feeling Nintendo is moving away from him as a gamer, but noone picked up on that and discussed it. They just kept moaning. I'm also not sure his statement is correct anyway. With Wii U they are trying to get core support so of anything they are moving back towards the core gamer compared to Wii. They are still trying to keep an expanded audience sure, but Wii U could end up being a pretty cool machine for core gamers. Time will tell, and in the end it might just be the lack of graphical leap that's getting in everyone's bonnet. After all, that's the easiest way to define next-gen.

I subscribe to this thread and I have never seen it move so fast in months.

They were pretty down on the WiiU. The even admitted that themselves later in the show if you didn't happen to rage quit by then.

I don't think that the heart of the problem Garnett had with the controller was that you didnt get 2 in the box. Its just that the controller is so prohibitively expensive that it 100% kills the ability to even play say 2 player madden on your couch with both players having a pad, calling plays VMU style. Couch co-op/vs on this machine is never 2 people on equal footing unless you take the pad out of the equation. Which is supposed to be the selling point of the device.

Garnett was good on these shows when he had knowledgeable sane people with him.

I made it until the woman referred to Nintendo having lower prices than competitors since the Wii.

I don't necessarily agree with them on the lack of a blu-ray drive but the analogy to fragmentation with iOS and the lack of disc drives on airs is weird.

I agree with that...

But the alternative.. and it could work.. would be to give one person the tV and one person the tablet.. sort of the same idea...
But someone gets stuck with a smaller screen.

You have to at least acknowledge that it's pretty late in the game to still not have any details regarding the online setup and features. I understand they want to save some surprises for the all out media/website blitz but right now it's tough to get excited about the launch games. People said the same thing about Vita and I got pretty tired of the launch games quickly. 6 months down the road when we may know more about the other consoles is when I'll make my mind up.

The problem with this podcast is they won't listen to the criticism, and Garnett won't change the show in anyway. All this criticism will be written off as Nintendo fanboys acting up, which undoubtedly is some of it. But a lot of the justified complaints about cast/discussion/glibness will get swept under the rug and/or completely ignored.

Somewhere along the way, Garnett stopped caring about the ability to foster intelligent, creative discussions with his guests. He keeps bringing his friends on the podcast, people who have no business being on radio, as opposed to people who can actually give worthwhile insights and critiques into the games we care about.

That's how the local co-op will work in Black Ops 2. Looks neat actually.

I'd rather hear Jeff Cannata do Phil Simms impersonations than hear Jenova Chan talk about anything.

I think there are a few guests they have in their rotation that have more of a varied taste. Adam Sessler, Spicer, and Cannata all play all types of games and give a lot of interesting insight IMO.

The one thing that does annoy me a bit is when they talk about a game that they all enjoyed but only speak on all of the negative things about that game. The "I'm not saying it's a bad game, I actually liked it a lot." has been happening a lot lately.

Yeah, as a matter of fact I am mad, bro.

The degree of misinformation and misrepresentation present in this thread reaches new heights over the WiiU.

Too much to wade into it all but it's clear many simply can't hear the whole message because they hang on the part they don't like. I've been saying the same thing all along--games like The Wonderful 101 and Pikmin 3 look great, but they aren't system-sellers; at least they aren't in a traditional sense and if they were to become so that would be a huge out-of-nowhere.

It's all well and good that Nintendo wants to get back in the core gaming space but their hardware has always thrived on having massive first party games to carry it. With the already large install base for PS3 and 360, it strikes me as a long shot that titles that will be equal on those systems that people will already have will offer much buyer motivation for someone to get a WiiU.

And while we don't really know the hardware horsepower we can surmise from its application that it runs somewhere on the order of the current machines and then figure it's likely more powerful to some degree by benefit of modern manufacturing techniques. But it's not a whole other level above and beyond 360/PS3.

Seriously, you don't like our opinion, then say something reasonable and we'll talk about it on the next show. Otherwise, other than just making me hate making the show, what are you aiming to accomplish?

I don't understand the point of bringing up the HDMI cable.

If the system didn't come with it they would complain. But if the system comes with it they mock it. What? That just doesn't make any sense. Same with CD playback. If they mock the inclusion of the HDMI cable surely they would mock it if "plays CDs" was listed as a feature.

It's stupid to have a discussion about it when it cannot win either way. I mean, not liking the system is fine but those complaints are just petty and idiotic and indicate someone with a pre-disposed mindset looking for extremely weak justification.

Nobody has a problem with being down on the WiiU by itself. Although I have to say that whether or not something is a system seller is different than whether or not it's a system seller for a particular person. "But will it sell?" is very different from "but do I like this?" Pikmin 3 may not be a system seller for the general public but personally I buy systems based on my own taste, not the taste of the public in general.

But beyond that, people have very specific complaints about the show that you should probably consider. It's not that you guys were down on WiiU, it's that some of the specific criticisms just didn't make sense.

Edit: Personally for me "but will it sell?" talk is never good. I really don't care if Joe Mouthbreathing Idiot is going to buy something in droves. It's like political coverage that is purely focused on horse race stuff - "but will the public vote for this guy?" - instead of coverage of policies. If a game is good the fact that not many people may buy it is an interesting aside at best.

When you focus a lot on sales speculation the implication is that sales is what matters - not quality.

Well for one, it would be nice if you weren't making non-sensical complaints to fill a void. How on earth were the complaints about the storage or different SKUs "fragmenting the market" valid?

I didn't have a big issue with their Wii U discussion. The discussion felt like they wished I had more to offer them. Jeff was the only one that seemed not interested in the console, but even then he had his reasons.

I think the general tone of the conversation was on the negative side, but that's not exclusive to WC. There are plenty of divisive opinions about Wii U.

I'd say that you guys shouldn't discuss news for news's sake. If there aren't two sides to a discussion (excluding devil's advocate) the discussion will be boring at best (there's no passion) or damaging at worst (noone to correct misinformation, looking like a beatdown is bad for the reputation) so my advice is if there aren't people who'll argue the other side sincerely it's best to just skip the segment.

That part was odd, I agree. The only real difference between the SKU's is a paltry bit of extra storage capacity. Even the 360 with it's massively different storage options didn't end up with a fragmented market.

I can see it causing confusion with people coming from the Wii, and that being the only console they have ever owned and not quite understanding why two different versions would be available. But fragmentation? Nah.

No surprise that Jeff Mattas has zero interest in Wii U. Now, if was called iWii ...

And the Wii U not coming with a Wii Remote is really a non-issue. It would be trade in fodder for so many people buying the thing, Nintendo would be throwing money away. Sure Gamestop would love to give you $2 for that pack-in Wii Remote you already have 6 of.

Found nothing really wrong with their Wii U Discussion except their bitching about there not being a Wiimote in the box. They all have multiple Wiimotes sitting around I'm sure (and so do all the fucking people who are going to buy Wii U). Andrea freaking called it a trouble and then later mentioned that she has 5 sitting around? So stupid.

EDIT: Just realized during their entire controller discussion that no one brought up the fact that you can play games on the GamePad alone. lolwut
EDIT 2: Wow and they are just shitting on Nintendoland. Didn't recognize the anti-Nintendo bias upon as much during the first listen.

Jeff Mattas brought up other points...he's not going to buy the Wii U to play third party games like AC3 and Darksiders 2 that aren't any better than the games he's playing on his 360. I think that's a fair argument and its really why the Vita is finding it tough to sell units and software. It's going to come down to the exclusives and I think in time, most of the gamers on this board will own one. I don't think it's crazy to still be on the fence.

Well..uh..guess I'm the only one...but I enjoyed this episode. Andrea is always one of my favourite WC guests. Didn't really have a problem with any of the discussion, I guess because I'm pretty apathetic towards the Wii U in general.

And Garnett, yet another pick against the Niners. I predict 5 INT's from Stafford this week against our D. I hope =D

Here's the point as I see it, you wouldn't necessarily buy the Wii U for third party games, but you would buy them for Nintendo games. If the quality of third party games from the system's launch onwards are best on the Wii U then you would buy them for your Wii U since you already have it from wanting to play Nintendo games. 2nd party games and 3rd party exclusives are just the cherry on top. This'll last at least until the Orbrango releases in roughly 18 months.
