Android, iOS, WP8 phone debate thread

Games and the Itune shits people already bought. Took me a while to divorce from Apple because I didn't want to part with all my movies. It was hard, man.
Yeah, that was the main reason why I wanted an iPhone 5. Though my account was 'hacked' and someone bought poker chips or something. Everything went smooth (refund, etc) until I wanted to actually use my account again.

Two weeks of sending emails back and forth. Apple telling me there's nothing they can do about that (account was locked down and they said they couldn't unlock it), calls not helping in any way as they told me that I'd have to send an email instead. Sending another email didn't help as they sent me to another guy again. Sopped bothering and decided to never buy anything on iTunes ever again. Seriously, that was, by far, the worst customer service experience I've ever had.

I know this is not the case for everyone and others have probably been helped quickly but I haven't and so that's why they don't deserve my money. The hole process took about a month and my account is still locked to this day.

Shots fired. iPhone 5 vs Lumia 920, low light. Taken at Photokina this weekend.

I remember thinking about this when they said that about the new screen technology that removes a layer and makes the screen look better. Nokia 920 has that as well. But Tim Cook did say best screen available at this time and it is hard to dispute that. The 920 is not out yet (and doesn't have a release date either).

Yeah, Apple likes to praise themselves. We all know that. Though their phone is already out so we should compare it to other devices that are already out when checking if their marketing talk is a lie or not.

Seeing as the phones are probably out within 1-2 months of each other, it is a fair comparison to make imo.

In my opinion, this is just a lame attempt at making Apple look worse than they actually are. The person who made the picture wants to prove that Apple lied and for that he compares a phone that's available now to one which isn't? Microsoft did the same crap a while ago when Internet Explorer for Windows Phone was updated. They also claimed how much better their browser was compared to Safari... completely ignoring that Safari was already out while their product wasn't. Tech evolves over time - who knew.

Apple wasn't talking about the future. They never said it's the best display that will ever exist or anything like that. Their message was clear: You want to get the best display available? Go with our smartphone.

I'm not sure why I'm defending Apple as I'm a Windows Phone user who recently converted to Android (won a Galaxy S3, will get the Lumia if Microsoft decides to actually support Europe) but the comparison is crappy. Compare it to an existing phone that a customer can buy and call Apple out for lying. I'm okay with that.

It's not like the stuff Nokia is talking about is still in the R&D department.

Edit: The longer you argue your point, the worse your argument seems. Ios hitches as well, getting worse usually with NEW ios iterations on older hardware (Android usually works in the opposite way for now). You seem to be glossing that over.

Yes ICS on most newer devices, isn't iPhone 4S or higher level speed, but JB has gone a loooong way to solving that. Its 60fps triple buffered buttery smoothness. Hitches exist during heavy data polling while an animation plays, but that shit happens on ios as well.
I'm only reporting what I saw. That's really all there is to it.

I have not yet seen a single example that disputes what I saw. Is every Android device I've ever used fucked up? Is that the explanation? Has the software been poor ALL THE WAY UP to the most recent update?

You can repeat yourself over and over again, but the experience I've seen simply isn't as smooth as Windows Phone 7 or iOS at this point.

I'm not an expert on Android, obviously, but I've been turned away time and time again by every device I've used. It's just not for me. I appreciate the robustness of the OS, but to me, I would only need that on a tablet or PC.

The overall experience isn't cohesive or refined enough for me. If anything I'd sooner switch to a Nokia 920 and Windows Phone 8 over Android. What Android delivers goes against what I'm looking for in a phone.

Oh I agree. Anything using LCD based technology continues to trail behind.

I'm disappointed to see that the Nokia phone is also using an IPS LCD, to be honest, as the black levels of OLED are better suited for Windows Phone.

OLED is the future for mobile displays.

I'm really not liking what I see of the new nokias as I had pretty much decided to stick to android when I upgrade next year and now I am considering changing to win 8.

I don't think we will repeat ourselves, its not neccessary. Every review, on every tech site that gets actual units and tests them agrees with us. You are trying to make it seem like your viewpoint that JB is some slow, framedropping, un-smooth mess is the actual general consensus, but its not. The general consensus falls in line with what we are saying.

You are the one all alone out on an island here. So no, I won't bother repeating it. Christ there is a video review right there on this very page that says JB is as smooth as iOS, and thats far from the only one. Nevermind that the version of JB that he is testing probably isn't even the official release but a beta one, and its skinned with Touchwiz.

That is a good point.

Honestly, reviewers simply tend not to notice those things so I can't say I trust them.

Again, it seems that all of the phones I tested were NOT running JB, but the Prime Infinity was.

I'm not saying it's a slow, frame dropping mess either. It's very usable and certainly smooth enough, but it's not as consistent as it should be. I'm not even suggesting that this is someone the sole reason why I won't buy an Android phone either. It's just one of many reasons and it's something I was completely surprised about yesterday. All of those phones I used had the same issue. Every one of them. Were they all broken? Would JB cure that problem 100%?

What I saw isn't even a matter of opinion. On those phones the issues existed. Period. If that is not the norm then the salesmen fucked up.

One thing to note about those videos...

In some videos, you can see that the scrolling on ICS is actually LOWER than 30 fps which makes JB appear smoother in comparison even if the video maxes out at 30 fps. Those 300 fps slow motion videos show a difference, but doesn't demonstrate how much better it looks in person.

Is there a phone with JB that I can go and check out now? As noted, the only JB device I've used is a Transformer Prime Infinity and it was not smooth.

Apple wasn't talking about the future. They never said it's the best display that will ever exist or anything like that. Their message was clear: You want to get the best display available? Go with our smartphone.
It's still using an LCD so they are automatically wrong in my book.

I don't know about iOS but everything on my S3 is smoother and faster than it is on my WP7. Or do you mean WP8 (which I personally have not tried yet). My most used app, whatsapp, loads instantly on my S3. It takes quite a while to boot up on WP7 even when I hold the back-key to just resume the app. Scrolling through my contacts inside the app is also not smooth at all.

The Facebook app on my WP7 is slow compared to its Android counterpart. Scrolling through my twitter feed smoothly is also not really possible on WP7 (Mehdoh). The main menu and stuff is absolutely fine but when the apps aren't optimised for the system then I'd not consider the user experience to be that smooth. I hope they make sure these most used apps run perfectly smooth on WP8. :)

Is there a good program to stream movies on the go to an Android phone like airvideo on the iphone? I stream movies from my computer to the iphone on my way home from work and airvideo works great, but I'm thinking of switching to a GIII or waiting for the new Nexus instead of the iphone 5.

Can't stand IOS. As a graphic designer, on the iphone, the readability of the icons, the names, it's just a fuckin mess. Seriously, it takes 10-15 seconds to find something on screen.
IOS6-SPECS.jpg

I can't see shit with quick glance.

Can't wait for ios defense force rebuttal.
(I have to say though, it's less of an issue on the Bigger screen of the ipad, but on the iphone, it's horrible.)

I rolled my eyes when I read those Nokia hardware spec ads. Nokia is the last company who can use hardware spec as a talking point. For years they are stuck in the 360X640 loser world. Who get me start on the cpu and screen size.

Who are they trying to preach to? Traditional Nokia users who for years have been buying low spec Symbian phones for superior battery life and build quality? Or the Xbox user who had never used a Nokia phone in their life?

Dice player. There are a bunch more.

What?

they have changed their focus. They will still be the worldwide leader in WP low end phones as it is a huge market but the new direction with Lumia and WP8 DOES deserve a spec war because they are relevant now in that regard. Who cares where they were 5 years ago, means nothing, they are here now on top of spec heap (esp camera and screen)

Me I guess. I mean, I'm going to decide what device to buy at that moment in the present. Reputation and pedigree matters, I wont deny that, but just because they had some issues in the past doesn't mean I won't buy their phone if they can present me more pros versus cons against the competition when I'm in the market for a phone. I think they deserve the right to boast, their tech is impressive, and some of it leads the mobile field right now, the camera in particular, along with the sensitive touchscreen tech.

seriously , coming form IOS to WP7 was like fresh air and a natural progressinon of UI design. It can not be overstated

Thats actually a good thing though right? More worthwhile choices.
I'm kinda past the point where I want the best, I just want to be consistent from phone to phone so I am not re buying apps and having to learn how to do what I want all over again.

You're obviously not interested in actually having a discussion that elaborates further on what you experienced, but would rather stick your fingers in your ears and continue to reiterate your, "Well I just tried and it suuuuuuucks" argument.

You can pull your fingers out. I'm done here anyway.

Alright, so tell me what to do. What can I do to experience this for myself?

That's all I'm asking.

So you're saying Jelly Bean solves all of these issues, right? Are there ANY phones that I can get my hands on right now with JB installed?

You're putting words in my mouth. It doesn't suck. I see the value in Android, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have its issues just like iOS or Windows Phone.

Try a Nexus 7? That might be your best bet? I find demo units of phones and tablets to run slow since people have fucked with them an ungodly amount of times.

OK, I have two friends with Nexus 7 tablets. I'll try them out and see what happens.

Obviously the Prime Infinity is too slow for JB so hopefully the lower resolution N7 will solve those problems.

The N7 actually does look like a great tablet. For $199 it's actually tempting to try out just to own something Android and really put it through its paces.

I owned a Droid Incredible for 2.5 years. It was my first smart phone. I have never owned an Apple product before. I didn't have a hate for Apple, I just could not afford most of their products nor did I have any real interest in them. So coming into my ownership of the iPhone 5 I think I am pretty unbiased by previous personal experiences. I only got the iPhone 5 because I needed a new phone and it seemed like a good choice.

I always knew the Incredible was slow, dated and just kinda lacking. Given that I did not have any previous smartphone experience I could not say that it was good or bad.

While I am not going to make a final judgement on the iPhone 5 and iOS6 my first impressions are very mixed and if I am to be honest, negative.

There is absolutely no question that Apple has made a great piece of hardware. I have not held a phone that gives off a better sense of quality, engineering and overall classiness. The screen is great. The microphones and speakers are great. The screen surface is great. The buttons are great. The lightning connector is solid. IMO it looks great.

Unfortunately, that is where the enjoyment stops for me. iOS6 is frustrating. Not because I am used to the motions of android... but more because there are so many little things android does that make my everyday usage easy. Always having a .com button when I need it. Always being able to rotate the display and subsequently keyboard. The simplicity of google's native apps vs apple's. Having an app list readily accessible. Ease of changing settings for apps. Widgets, when done correctly are a nice convenience. Etc. Oh and I really miss my Nexus Revamped dynamic background.

I was contemplating getting a Samsung Galaxy SIII instead but felt that it had the build quality of a dollar store item and I just do not like big screens. Overall I am glad I did not get it. You cannot fix hardware, only software. That being said, if the iPhone 5 had ICS (or whatever the latest version is 4.1???) I think I would own the perfect phone. In fact, this (Android OS) is what Samsung should be touting, not their stupid homemade apps.

I hope Apple takes a serious look at iOS and realizes that they may be the king of sales, but they are no longer the king of user experience.

That's properly impressive.

Something I bet every smartphone will be mimicking in just the next couple of years. Really really awesome. Such a simple thing that they sat down and figured out how to fix. I will probably swap to the grid unlock screen when that hits phones though, seems like its actually possible to accidentally unlock a mere swipe lock with that tech.

Dark, in my very first reply, I said that Android will probably never be as consistent in performance as ios or wp7/8. I explained why.

With that in mind, you have to understand then, you will never be satisfied with the OS performance. JB solves a lot with how the GPU renders the UI and how its buffered (especially when tracking your finger movements). In fact, that's the biggest improvement IMO.

ICS (except for on the GS3 at times) would not keep a locked 60fps when you scroll using your finger instead of flicking and letting kinetics take over. A incredible annoyance, especially in scroll heavy situations like web browsing. Moving to a tripple buffered setup fixes that almost completely, but there ARE still some lingering jank in Andy-roid.

Rotating the display with the keyboard up can halve the frame rate (this isn't an issue on moto phones even with gingerbread thanks to how they cache before the rotation). Also, like I've mentioned before, keeping GUI animations and interactions on the same thread as data polling means less performance consistency compared to its competitors.

Keep in mind that Android is a general purpose based OS, not written for a specific hardware setup, but rather hardware/software intercommunication guidelines. It would more than likely have to be written from the ground up to achieve parity in performance.

Still, on something like the Nexus 7 or Galaxy Nexus, you can see that JB is enough of an improvement so as to make the old Android jank argument, fairly moot. There are better things to pick on the OS for.

And....ios has its fair share of jank too.

Edit: for the record, my detailed replies aren't excuses for the OS performance you experienced in store. iCS can be pretty hitch for sure. I'm just being respectfully enough to give you some insight into the situation rather than me just saying, "OK".

If, at all, you can somehow return the iPhone 5 for a different phone I strongly suggest the Xperia T which seems to address you concerns with build quality and uses Android.

How do you guys get into this stuff? It's so childish and boring.

As much as the Mac ads sucked, at least they attempted personality and humor. This sort of thing is just bringing Internet commenter garbage to life.

I think the Mac vs. PC ads sucked, these ads suck and most of all these damn info-graphic ads that seem to be everywhere online now suck.

I don't get how the statement regarding iPhone 5's screen tech (Tim Cook) is justified by taking into account that the Lumia 920 isn't released yet. The iPhone 5 wasn't released when the conference was taking place was it now? Besides, the Nokia event was before the Apple event, so they confirmed the screen technology at an event prior to Apple's event.

Isn't Xperia T supposed to have a shitty battery life (an early reviews suggested that at least: http://recombu.com/mobile/reviews/sony/xperia-t/ )

Now onto the pain-point - battery life on the Sony Xperia T just isn’t good enough. A victim of its own strengths as with the HTC One X, this phone makes you want to use it. The stunning, easy on the eyes screen makes you want to Pocket articles, you’re inclined to read them on the go and surf the web and the great multimedia capabilities just long to play back HD video content and music. If you do all this though, don’t expect your phone to make it to the evening - and by evening, we’re talking late afternoon. For the best hope of making the 1800 mAh last, dim your brightness, activate power saver mode and if you’re thinking about going on a long trip, you’ll want to take a portable power supply. Sadly, that’s the reality of life with some modern mobiles.

Right now I'm using an old Defy (on a CM7 mod) and the battery drains so damn fast..
I'm looking at new phones right now and goddamn - it seems like none of the new flagship phones has a reasonable battery life.

What Windows Phone are you comparing to your Galaxy S3? Please tell me it's not a 2010 Samsung Focus.

I believe with "Prime Infinity" you mean either Asus Transformer Prime or Asus Transformer Infinity? Neither of them has received the official JB update so it might be too early to judge them.

Since I've pretty much realized that I only use my phone for browsing the internet, listening to music and taking photos, I might be picking up the 920. I used to shun Windows Phone because of the low amount of apps, but I realized that it doesn't really matter to me as long as I've got the essentials.
