Halo |OT9| One Final Effort Is All That Remains

Never had problems like this... There are authentication problems that are resolved by letting it sign in and then going back to the link, but other than that and general performance issues it's not that bad...

Waypoint hasn't worked for me in about 3 weeks. Literally nothing ever works. The one kinda/sorta workaround that I found is opening a new browser window using private or incognito mode. Even then it's about a 10% chance that whatever you're trying to view doesn't throw an error code or just time out over and over again.

Right now their entire site is stuck in 2011. Like literally the front page posts are all from 2011 and all the links to the pictures, etc., from last night are dead and throw errors.

I really hope they're overhauling the entire site (as rumored) for the launch of Halo 4. It needs a fresh start from ground up.
And a stat API for 3rd party apps and sites

Eh. I gave on Waypoint months ago. It needs to be rebuilt from the ground up... Which is unlikely, all things considering.

Tunavi banned? Whoa.

New screens look awesome. Complex seems interesting; hopefully we'll get video of it tonight so I can get a better feel for the layout.

I wonder if tonight's bulletin video is about Flood mode...

Yeah.

That explanation Frankie gave, is the only time I have completely disagreed with, or failed to see the positives from the implementation.

this. The whole explanation doesn't fit with the other UI changes. Their idea of streamlining is to remove good indicators for your weapons but give you the screen text.

Wasn't the text to help "newer players" to get an idea what is happening in the match? Don't know why displaying your second weapon wouldn't help in this regard?

Maybe Steitzer tells you repeatedly whih weapon you have on slot 2.

Screens look awesome and the fact that Halo 4 is almost gold is even better.
Hope it won't be leaked so early as Reach

So, there's still some things we know exist in some form or another that we're still waiting on a reveal for:

- 2 new vehicles (unless Mantis is one)
- 4 more MP maps
- 2 more Forge environments (and additional pieces, color schemes, tools, etc...)
- Groups
- Ranking system (?)
- Detailed progression system breakdown
- Challenge system
- Theater
- Bungie Pro equivalent
- Custom game options
- Spartan Ops customization (beyond difficulties/skulls ?)
- All skulls
- Full medal list

(Additional new game modes like Dominion, revamped CTF, etc..?)

What else?
Good list, add "Disc 2 content?" on it then it is complete for me.

For the last few weeks, I've had to delete all my cookies in order for the site to even load. On both of my PCs, no less.

I sincerely hope they completely rework that site before 4 launches, or else it'll never get as much use from me as bnet did. Get rid of the ridiculous, buggy dropdown layouts for the stats, stop trying to make everything so seamless and ajax-y (with the in-page loads without changing the url, etc), and fix the crippling performance issues that make it such a pain to use. Functionality just isn't what it needs to be for a successor to such a fantastic stats hub like bnet. I mean, you can't filter your matchmaking game history by playlist. How much of an oversight is that?

343's web team is working on a site overhaul "that's due out around launch" according to Snickerdoodle:

Edit: That is, if the site even works for you to see my link!

One of my favorite things about this game so far is that all the multiplayer maps seem to be carefully designed not just for how they play but the art style too. We all know Bungie got lazy with maps in Reach so it's nice to good looking maps again.

I agree that Reach has least good maps of any Halo game, but why do you think Bungie got lazy?

Yeap, works for me.

And... that's interesting. Hopefully they fix all the problems that are there now... Although it's not like I'm going to continue posting on their forums anyway, but it's still buggy while trying to sign in and whatnot (Too difficult to try and post on three forums consistently, IMO. I post here, and Bungie.net. Waypoint just doesn't fit).

Halo 4 is "apparently gold", yet we have little knowledge on the ranking system. GG

EDIT: I'll give it about a week before we start seeing leak streams.

The site has always been an uphill battle for me, to the point where I visit it less and less.

I wonder if tonight's bulletin video is about Flood mode...
I'd be surprised if it wasn't another weapon video, focusing on the Promethean stuff. Hopefully 343 will release the non-wub version concurrently with the wubwub for those of us who actually want to hear how the weapons are going to sound on their awesome headphones.

I had a post a while back pointing out a bunch of stuff on Waypoint, but that was primarily on the stat tracking aspect of it. If it is possible for them to drop Silverlight, it would probably be for the best. It's such a PoS when we have alternatives like HTML5 now.

Elzar got Tunavi banned, clearly

also, Halo 4 sure looks pretty. Now how about that fuckin' ranking system or playlist information or theater or something substantial.

It's been over a week since I've been able to access anything there. Le sigh. Thanks for the direct image embeds.

Page 117!

Game is looking so good. The Reach engine is hardly recognizable. Amazing how much they were able to improve it.

Look at dat Oceanic!

I've said it before, but major respect to 343 for having the stones to redesign the whole look. Is the art style classic Halo? No. It's clearly going for a modern, more "serious" look - more Starship Troopers than Star Wars.

I generally follow individual game designers more than game IPs, so my willingness to keep following Halo is based entirely on seeing what 343 brings to the table, and so I'm okay with change. They are swinging for the fences. They may strike out (doesn't look like it so far, though). But if they hit a home run I'll be quite happy to add 343, Holmes, Ellis & co to the list of dev teams I follow.

I like the new Clive Barker-ish Flood, too.

Frankie/David - Love the mech. Very FASA-ish, is it a nod to classic Mechwarrior?

Hopefully I will be able to open it tonight to read the bulletin

Just wait for Wu to localize it on HBO, it's far less painful.

What about the sentinel beam?

Kinda ridiculous that the only forerunner weapon we had in previous halo games is not returning, now that they are being given their own weapon sandbox.

Plus, it actually filled a unique role in the general sandbox, unlike the dozens of rifles we have right now.

First they came for the Grunts.
Then they came for the Jackals.
Then they came for the Elites.
Now they've come for the Flood, and still people say it's perfectly okay because it's just 343's innovative vision.

In general, graphics look as beautiful as always.

New screens are looking niceee.

I don't see all the hate towards waypoint, I have never encountered a problem. *shrug*

Waypoint should just get rid of the whole theme on that website, it just bulky for no reason. Keep it clean and fast, even if the design is just a tad basic. Bungie nailed it with their website in that regard.

Clear temp files and cookies, restart the browser, restart your computer, uninstall Silverlight (just for kicks), use Internet Explorer :(

Those are all the tips I have. I never seem to have any problems other then waiting days for pages to open.

Congrats 343i on going gold with Halo 4.

Cannot wait to get back into Halo once H4 comes out. Perfect timing with winter, so I won't feel bad spending entire weekends/nights sitting at home playing it.

New screens look incredible too.

Frankie made a post mentioning how that [no secondary weapon in HUD] came about, but yeah secondary weapon isn't going to be there.

Link?

For me, this is a worse change than anything CTF or jackal design related. What the fuck, 343i?

Also, the flood looks uninspired and lackluster. I'd like to see a more "infected" look, for lack of a better word. They just look too clean.

Never had such problem.

I'm on firefox btw if you cared to know.
I've tried every browser besides Firefox (which is my go-to), and it's always the same "error, cannot process your request" garbage. Very rarely does signing in and/or refreshing the page work.

Count yourself lucky.

Yes, but RC master mirrors my thoughts.

Although, I don't care about the white text, doesn't affect me.

Tuna noooooooo!

Eh, I can see what they're saying but I think secondary weapons and the white text fulfil largely different roles.

The secondary weapon icon does not really give the player needed information besides simply having a secondary weapon. You cannot see the ammo for it so you'd have to switch to it to check but then you are simply clarifying what frankie had said. The players know they have a scondary and they know what it is or else they press Y to find out.

The white text is definitely a different beast and one that makes me believe is entirely 343's intention to draw attention to gameplay facets without actually drawing attention away. In one of Bravo's latest videos he mentions how getting an assassination with the flag earns 3x as much as a normal kill. That +30 is going to be an incentive to someone in order to run the flag. For other objective modes where people feel as though they have no reason to carry the objective, I see the white text (much as I see the flagnum) as a way, not necessarily encourage players to go for the objective but rather, to benefit the players that do.

The white text is the reward that needs to be seen by players (even for a split second that they will barely notice). This isn't a new concept in Halo. In Reach, what happens when you kill someone while holding the oddball? You get that sick medal pop up. You just killed the flag carrier? Boom. Medal. They don't really encourage players to do those things because you won't know about it until you get it. Those things ust benefit the player's perception of fun. The game has seen you do this amazing feat and you feel great.

Do I think the white text + medal + steitzer combo is too much feedback for these things? I kind of do but then again I'm willing to bet when I personally play the game, I'd just enjoy them. I am going to be studying the level of concentration gamers/non-gamers have in the coming few months and I might just run some tests on various UI elements in games. Initially, I believe the case to be that players will see the text but it won't be taking any cognitive effort to notice it. I think 343 aren't trying to flood the senses but instead they are just throwing out all this info so that at least one piece of that vital information goes to the player. I'm positive there are situations where you simply don't notice some waypoint has been on screen in some game. Sure, how often are you playng a flag game only to realise your flag has been stolen seemingly under your nose because you just completely missed it?

I dunno. I think there is a very clear difference between the roles of UI elements such as the weapons/grenades and the live gameplay feed, medals and white text. I can't really think of an important enough reason to keep the secondary weapon icons especially if they'd only confuse players because of the large overlaps in visual similarities. If they had an older sandbox, of course I think they could have kept it but even then, its purpose would not be really realised by players.
