Some of these newer ones are less impressive. All movies after 2000, BEHIND THE SCENES EXCLUSIVE FOOTAGE:

Recently watched The Wizard of Oz on blu-ray, afterward went looking for bts pics of Frank Morgan in the full on "Wizard Head" make up, the big green bald disembodied head. Searched and searched and searched, nothing.

$10,000,000 to whoever can succeed where I failed.

The doofuses behind the Power Ranger movie thought it would be a good idea to have no visor for the helmets.

Which really fucked with the whole "secret identity" thing they had going on in the show.

I sadly can't find pictures of this, but the opening scene of 2001: A Space Odyssey where you see the Sun coming up over the Earth was actually made my filming a sunrise inside a barn. Kubrick had them drill a bunch of holes in the side of the wall to capture the crescent and used black paint to block everything else out.

For everyone wondering about that shot from The Gate, I could be totally off base but to me it looks like an off center forced perspective shot. I've done a quick shitty MS paint job to illustrate:

The red outline is for the stuff that is in front of the shot and the guys in the demon suits on the "floor" are in the background. If you can imagine moving a few feet (or whatever, I have no idea how much this shot is off by) to the left and seeing all the elements in the shot lining up.

As I said I could be 100% wrong but that's what it looks like to me at least.

Edit: Although the thought of them making a huge oversize blue hoodie just for the shot is fairly amusing :D

I hope my friend is OK with me sharing this picture of him:

Hammering out the little petals on the ground for Coraline. He's worked in the greens department for both the Laika films you may or may not know (Coraline, ParaNorman), so I get to see quite a few awesome behind-the-scenes stuff from him and his movie buddies.

Artificial perspective in the film Blackguard (1925). Art direction by Alfred Hitchcock. Old Hollwood films (or even up to the 90's were filled with ingenuity).

This thread is fucking awesome. Those Ghostbusters and T2 pictures are awesome. Two of my favorite movies ever, and I've never really seen any of that.

The documentary Dangerous Days has way better images and footage of all the incredible special effects work for Blade Runner.

To add to this: They did this because they had full sized humans in that scene as well. If you look at the wall close to the bed, there is a bit of floor sticking out too. This is where the full sized humans stood in the scene. Everything else was far. The youtube video Ajemsuhgao posted shows the effect in action.

26 seconds in. You can see the door is split underneath the knob. But... I still don't understand why that whole split was needed. Weird.

Wow this thread is so great. Too many different awesome posts to comment on. A lot of this also reinforces my belief of practical effects > CG effects.

They're just tools. A good practical effect is just as effective as a good CG effect.

I don't understand why the forced perspective was needed here. I really want to see this scene.

It's from a 1987 movie called "The Gate"

I actually knew what movie this was from...A old guilty pleasure of mine from the 80's. I recognized the little demons instantly and I swear, to this day the effects for them are brilliant. I always imagined a lot of them were stop motion but wow, amazing pic.

For anyone interested, it is currently on Netflix.

De Palma, Manolo, and Montana. For those 3, I'd carve something up real nice.
