Doom 3 BFG edition. Anyone excited for this?

Only if they fixed the sound effects. I want the PC version, but the original had some of the worst gun and explosion sounds...ever. And I have no idea how an ID game would release sounding like that.

Nah, I'm with you dude. Doom 3 was a blast, yet I'm not sure I'll get BFG edition. Payin dollars for underbarreled flashlight, slightly better textures (they are obviously worse than Sikkmod) and couple new maps? $10 at max, but I bet they'll ask for at least $20; so no deal.

I know, I thought 30 was way too much but its 40 on consoles? Thats insane

You know, i'd written some big justification just now about how $30 would be worth it for BFG on consoles, but then I read that it will only be 30fps. Fuck that noise (although i'm not fully surprised given how amazing it still looks).

EDIT: it's mixed messages. John is suggesting that they are having trouble hitting 60fps on consoles as it's more demanding than RAGE. But he is also saying that 3D mode will be 60Hz, which some have inferred as 30fps for 2D (which is a bit weird).

I'll probably pick it up when its in a sale on play or zavvi etc.

Doom 3 was kinda boring to be honest. All I remember was how it kept spawning enemies behind you, which was more annoying that scary. ROE was a lot better, felt like there was more action.

No co-op would be really disappointing but 3D is welcome.

So...in the end, the game is just 30fps? well thanks, but no thanks, i´ll stick to the pc version
Is 30 fps really confirmed? If so, that's just plain sad.
No it started with someone asking John Carmack on Twitter whether there will be additional effects for Doom BFG for PS3 and he answered there won't as it's already hard enough to achieve 60fps which then resulted in some news pages to report the PS3 version has problems running at 60fps.
And I think he mentioned somewhere else that on PC 3D mode can run at 60fps but not on consoles which was apparently a bit confusing as well.

But this doesn't mean the console versions will run at 30fps:
"Yes, Doom 3 BFG on the PS3 is 60 fps / 720p. It plays very nicely."

I'm excited to see the how the rift works. Excited as hell. Doom 3 just happens to be the game spearheading the project.

If this package included Doom 64, it would be something I'd consider. Otherwise, I'll stick to my collector's edition on 360 which already includes 1 & 2 and I'll continue to deal with the N64 controllers when I'm in the mood to play that one. Doom 3 was okay from what i played, but realistically Doom 64 felt more like a proper Doom 3 than the game which actually received that name.

Ripped straight from Wikipedia, because that's about as much as I care:

"A re-release of Doom 3 called Doom 3 BFG Edition will be released on October 16, 2012[70] in North America and three days later in Europe on October 19 for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The BFG Edition will feature "greatly enhanced graphics", better sound with more horror effects, a checkpoint save system, and support for 3D displays and HMDs. The game will also include the previous expansion Resurrection of Evil and a new single player expansion pack called The Lost Mission. Additionally, it will include copies of the original Doom, and Doom 2. The BFG Edition will also feature the ability to use the flashlight while holding a weapon, in the form of the so-called armor-mounted flashlight.[71]"

Holy shit yes!
My only gripe was the flashlight, so fuck yeah! Buying this day one.

To be clear, the torch can be used whilst holding a gun, but it's like in Half-Life, it has a limited battery life, so you still need to use it sparingly.

My interest ranges between $0 and $9.99.

I'll probably end up buying it during the eventual Steam Sale
, only to yawn my way through the intro sequence and get bored with the shooting after the first area.

During the last Steam sale (Summer sale), the existing Doom 3 never went below $12.99. It did finally dip lower than that during Quakecon, though.

Doom 3 would be amazing if they would release it year or two earlier. I still remember those screenshot from alpha builds that were looking amazing. Problem is they delayed it too much and when it finally was released game wasn't fun that much and it was still quite looker but it wasn't amazing anymore.

I'm super excited myself (love Doom 3), but I was more surprised to see the reactions of people at a local game shop. Footage of Doom 3 showed up on one of the screens while I was waiting in line and a number of people stopped and noticed.

"Oh shit, that's Doom 3? That looks awesome", one guy exclaims.

It's almost as if they didn't realize it was a 2004 game.

Wasn't amazing? Come on, man, it was the best looking game on the PC back in 2004. Sure, Far Cry was already out there, but its ugly artwork and inconsistent design held it down (Doom 3 holds up so much better by today's standards as well). Half-Life 2 was still months away and even that wasn't doing everything Doom 3 could. It was an incredible looking game.

The Doom 3 released on XBOX is not the same as the actual Doom 3.

There are people who think Rage looks amazing. It takes all sorts.

Doom 3 looks very good for a 360 game, considering the competition for 60fps games at least. Certainly better than Rage and CoD.

Playing a bit of it recently, I don't think it's too different from a typical shooter we see today. Its linearity is something I think will help it with today's audience as opposed to the one that had played the first two Doom games and came in with certain expectations in 2004.

Not as linear as most games still.- There is some sideways movement in some levels with a little bit of backtracking

Not worth more than $10 on the current market.

Also the scares in the game came cheaply and not organically like a good horror FPS e.g. System Shock 2

The audio logs were forgettable too.

They both have different goals. Doom 3 has pretty great lighting, but it doesn't attempt to have the scale seen on Rage.
While that's true, you still ultimately spend the majority of your time in very normal levels in Rage, the over-world can look great, but most the time, the game looks like this:

Where as Doom 3, looks like this:

It seems like the Doom 3 engine was much better suited to the actual game they wanted to make. The Rage engine would have been perfect if they were making Fallout 4, but for a shooter, the technological compromises they made seemed poorly chosen to me.

So, console version IS infact 60 FPS (in 2D at least) ?

well that's great news, pretty much every website was reporting this as being 30 on consoles when it was originally announced.
Correct, only Doom 4 will be 30fps on consoles (I think only for the SP).
But Doom 3 BFG is 60fps :)

They've said that about Doom 4, but I'm still skeptical that Doom 4 will even be released for current generation consoles. I don't expect to see that game for a good long while and it wouldn't make sense to release it on 360 and PS3 by that point.

It's never been clear what the plans for Doom 4 are. Even when he said they're targeting 30fps but he hopes to push for 60fps for multiplayer, he suggested the game could be cross-generational. Surely if that was the case, even then they'd move to 60fps for the single player on the next-gen consoles.

I think Doom 4 could actually be fairly close, they planned to have two teams, but now Rage 2 is canned, I imagine that team are assisting with Doom 4 to try and get that out while PS360 are still viable.

I thought the driving sucked, but rage hadsome of the best shooting of the generation.

Yes, mechanically it's a fine shooter, I was talking about graphically. It's as if the technological focus of the game was on the open world aspect, which game design-wise, is far from the focus.

one day I really hope they release a stupidly large version of Rage so we can see the art in all it's glory. i do think it's a really attractive looking game until you get close to things... and i still don't know why they didn't make things that you have to get close to (like doors) models since they could then be textured in high detail like characters were.

but, to go back to what you said on the last page, i'm not *just* trading cross talk for low resolution. the Oculus adds other benefits over my 3DTV.

You understimate the power of money.

The main problem of the game, gameplay wise, is it play exactly like the old of doom/doom2 & you can't use the torch light with the weapon.
It most certainly DOES NOT play like the older games. Not at all.

That is, in fact, one of the chief complaints a lot of people had with it. That said, I think it plays beautifully on its own and is a very solid shooter. The actual level progression, however, is very different.

QFT, the game is good, but I fucking hated the gun sounds. Btw can this be fixed with a mod on the original D3?

Yes.

I always used the Trent Reznor made sound pack ripped from the original Doom 3 E3 leak. They sound a hell of a lot better to me.

Whats different? A friend of mine gave me Doom 3 collectors for the original Xbox, but I just set it aside, since I figured it was just a normal console port of the PC version.
