Doom 3 BFG edition. Anyone excited for this?

Welp, I finished the game! And somehow got the speedrun achievement for finishing in under 10 hours. Having never played it to completion before, I enjoyed it, but like I said a few posts up, the last few levels really drag. Everything post-Hell really. That level is a highlight.

EDIT: Now to play ROE, which I owned back in the day but only played like, an hour of. I remember enjoying the weird artifact/bullet time mechanic.

After playing about half of the game I'm really not liking the changes here. The amount of ammo is absolutely ridiculous. To the point where there seems to be more than enough ammo to kill every single enemy with just a single weapon for the entire game. It really is too much. There was plenty of ammo in vanilla and you'd never come close to running out as long as you cycled your guns every once in a while. In BFG the storage closets are almost a waste of time because I was fully stocked almost every single time I found them. I just opened them anyway out of habit.

Also the levels are simply too bright. This isn't just slightly tweaking things to make the game more visible... they're exposing parts of the map that are basically flat, low detail filler that were meant to be hidden in darkness while the nice complex geometry was always well lit. Power's out in alpha labs 4? Could'a fooled me! No point is using the EFR, I can see just fine as it is. :p

It's really upsetting that people seem to have succeeded in convincing Carmack that D3's design was a mistake. Even if the flashlight 'issue' was born from a technical limitation, that's a limitation the game was entirely built upon and they created an interesting design ethos around it. So many parts of the game are completely stripped of tension and purpose. Why did they even keep the lamp escort npc now that you can see perfectly fine without him? It makes the clashing ideology so grossly conspicuous. It just feels empty.

I personally hope Doom 4 goes back to the speed and scale of the map and encounter design of D2, but this game was fine the way it was and Tim Willits' comments on contemporary design and demographics really don't make me expect anything nearly as good as vanilla D3.

I just felt like ranting for a bit because playing this for the last 2 hours kind of put me in a sour mood. :p

Enjoy your playthrough!

ROE is indeed awesome, and in the last half it feels extremely intense with huge waves of enemies spawning in one after another. The game really started giving me that Doom adrenaline rush. It's just a shame the artifact makes everything ridiculously easy.

I will always hold ROE in high regard as one of the last 'proper' retail expansion packs before the dlc insanity began.

Just finished the Lost Mission.

It's definitely not an expansion on the same scale as RoE; this will take you only a couple of hours to complete, it doesn't seem to use any new assets, and there is not much care paid to things like scripted events and story progression. I don't give a *shit* about the story in Doom 3 though, and while I realize this small addition is missing the production value of a proper expansion, I still loved it. The level design starts to pick up as you progress, but don't expect any new tricks. There's far fewer scripted events than in the campaign; it's mostly just monsters spawning with that teleporter animation in front or behind you. But Lost Mission is fun because you can experience pretty much every Doom 3 enemy in a couple of hours, you don't have to wait long at all to get the good weapons, and the gunplay is as satisfying as it ever was. Really I'm just glad to have more Doom 3! I never finished RoE so I'm looking forward to revisiting that as well. As for the main campaign, I might revisit trying to get Sikkmodd working on my regular copy before playing the BFG Edition. The flashlight seems totally out of place in the Lost Mission and I know its new implementation kind of ruins the feel of the original game. Off the top of my head I'm already thinking that when you first obtain the shotgun, that moment just wouldn't be the same if you can use the flashlight at the same time as your gun.

First time playing this, and I have to say. This shit is fucking horrid. ID needs to close up shop for this disappointing cesspool of corridors and ugly animation.

Go through door....fire ball throwing pumpkin head rip off sides step, then throw fire ball. Then side steps. Repeat.

Or, scripted pumpkin head jumping trough a door I just open.

GAME IS FUCKING SHIT.

I just realized that none of weapons cast any light on the environment anymore. You used to be able to track enemies in the dark because your gunfire would illuminate them. Fire a weapon in a pitch black room and...nothing. I used to love seeing the tiny blue glow when the plasma gun model brushed against a wall. Now? Nothing.

Nothing. I guess it's time to uninstall and replay vanilla. :p

Funny how the game is so bright now I didn't realize it until several hours in.

Wow...

So did they port this to id tech 5 or something? I remember RAGE having absolutely zero dynamic lighting, which was just laughable for a game to come out this century, especially coming from id who practically pioneered that shit.

So... They traded one light source for another.

There has to be a CFG tweak that'll turn on muzzle flashes.

Not really, but they added a few elements from id5 to the engine.

It's not a good trade. I'm sure some ini edits can re-enable them, but I don't see the point anymore.

You're right though, I should have thought to mess around in the cfg files first. But honestly, it's silly that it's necessary in the first place. They really should have made sure this version was at least on par with the original from the outset.

does anyone know if this is available on xbox 360 for below £20 - £25 in the uk? I really want it, but don't want to spend more than the £20 - £25.

My 6800Gt could run the game fairly easily at the time.

Anyway, I've been playing the BFG edition and I think that's the first time motion blur has really disturbed me. At 32x it's absolutely unbearable, I had to tone it down to 16x.

ShopTo have it for £25, if that's any use?

Thinking about buying this on PS3... Does it have that awesome co-op mode from the original Xbox version?

So if I've never played Doom 3 before, and want to play it on consoles, should I get this version or the original XBOX version? Seems like a silly question, but some of the impressions in this thread are saying some things were changed graphically for the better, and some not...

I think for the most part we're talking of of PC Doom 3 versus PC Doom 3 BFG. On console... well, they did axe co-op, but if that doesn't have a local option it's meaningless. I'm thinking you may as well get BFG, but maybe the HD + 60 FPS won't counteract the other changes.

I think Doom 3 has aged fine. But lets not compare it to Halo. Talk about Call of Apples and BattleOranges 3.

No Im just giving an example.

halo came out in 2001 did it not? doom 3 came out in 2004, so therefore it should theoretically play alot better as well, but it doesn't. it was dated the day it came out. rigid animations and horrible gun-play. the models are some of the worst I have ever seen. altho the bfg edition shines with some nice atmospheric lighting and some decent shadders. but thats about it really.

I think it's pretty clear that releasing this on the PC was a huge mistake. I can understand WHY they did it, but they really should have known this kind of reaction would happen.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with releasing Doom 3 on consoles. I think it's a neat idea and the results are rather excellent overall. Could they have been improved upon further? Sure, of course, but as it stands the port is still excellent.

I'm also disappointed to see people crawling out and bashing on Doom 3 once again just like 2004. Doom 3 is a unique shooter in this day and age and I think it holds up magnificently. The core gunplay is an absolute joy, the visuals remain striking, and there is a lot of attention to detail throughout. It has its share of issues but, overall, I think it's aged better than any of the other big 2004 shooters. Half-Life 2 just doesn't hold up all that well and Far Cry is a joke. Doom 3 is one of those games I've left installed on my various PCs over the years as it is just a joy to return to from time to time. It's a shame so many people hate it.

You're right, it didn't have any dynamic lighting...but it was pretty obvious WHY that was. The game was designed to run at 60 fps on consoles while delivering fairly complex visuals. Dynamic lighting would have been overly taxing.

Rage was gorgeous, though.

Rage was so awesome that I did every single mission, including the side ones that took you back to old environments. I still want that DLC bad.

I've just been in HMV and they've got it for £25. Surprised me as I was expecting them to jack it up to £30. Not sure if that's any use to you.

Are there are firm impressions of the PS3 version in here? I'm interested in the game at that price but not sure how the console versions have turned out next to some of these complaints about the PC build.

I know, me too. I absolutely LOVE the missions in that game and had no problems running through the same environments.

The hub stuff is pretty boring on replays, though. Kinda wish they would have added a "mission select" option or the ability to play each shooter mission one after another classic Doom style.

Horrible gameplay? I think it's a lot better than halo. It really makes you take some carefull aim at the demons to make sure that the bullets or pellets hit them

There's a huge layer of strategy behind Halo's gameplay as well.

Can't they BOTH be held in high regard? Why must one stand over the other? They're both amazing.

So is Doom 3 original really a better buy than Doom 3 BFG on PC? That's kind of terrible.

Yes. Also in response to earlier posts by other posters Doom 3 was way ahead of its time and is far better than Halo ever was in both gameplay and presentation.
